Optical noninvasive monitoring of skin blood pulsations

2005

Time-resolved detection and analysis of skin backscattered optical signals (remission photoplethysmography or PPG) provide rich information on skin blood volume pulsations and can serve for reliable cardiovascular assessment. Single- and multiple-channel PPG concepts are discussed. Simultaneous data flow from several locations on the human body allows us to study heartbeat pulse-wave propagation in real time and to evaluate vascular resistance. Portable single-, dual-, and four-channel PPG monitoring devices with special software have been designed for real-time data acquisition and processing. The prototype devices have been clinically studied, and their potential for monitoring heart arrh…

The modulation of causal contexts in motion processes judgment as revealed by P2 and P3

2017

The evoked response potential (ERP) procedure was used to investigate the representation of motion processes in different causal contexts, such as the collision of two squares or the repulsion of two magnets with like poles facing. Participants were required to judge whether each movement was plausible according to the causal context depicted by the cover story. Three main differences after the movement of the second object were found. First, the amplitudes at 70-170ms (N1) and 170-370ms (P2) elicited by a no-contact condition were more negative than a contact condition in the square context, whereas larger N1 and more positive amplitudes at 370-670ms were elicited by a no-contact condition…

Design and validation of a brief scale for cognitive evaluation in people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia (BCog‐S)

2019

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Schizophrenia is often related to cognitive deficits. Mental health nurses are involved in health promotion, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation in schizophrenia. However, the nursing literature addressing cognitive rehabilitation from schizophrenia is very limited. Cognition and its domains (communication, information processing, attentiveness, concentration, orientation, memory and calculation skills) are established by the Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC), but they are difficult to measure. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: We present a new standardized cognitive assessment to be administered by nurses to people diagnosed with schizophre…

Neuromuscular performance in voluntary bilateral and unilateral contraction and during electrical stimulation in men at different ages.

1995

A group of 33 men divided into three different age groups, M30 years (n = 11), M50 years (n = 12) and M70 years (n = 10) volunteered as subjects for examination of their maximal voluntary isometric bilateral and unilateral forces and force-time curves of the knee extensor muscle group as well as electromyogram activity of the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis and rectus femoris muscles of the right and/or left leg contractions. Electrical stimulation (ES) of 50 Hz was also given by two surface tin electrodes for each subject and each leg separately with the maximal tolerable intensity for recording the isometric force evoked. The maximal force produced by the voluntary isometric unilateral …

Improvements in Empathy and Cognitive Flexibility after Court-Mandated Intervention Program in Intimate Partner Violence Perpetrators: The Role of Al…

2016

Research assessing the effectiveness of intervention programs for intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators has increased considerably in recent years. However, most of it has been focused on the analysis of psychological domains, neglecting neuropsychological variables and the effects of alcohol consumption on these variables. This study evaluated potential neuropsychological changes (emotional decoding, perspective taking, emotional empathy and cognitive flexibility) and their relationship with alcohol consumption in a mandatory intervention program for IPV perpetrators, as well as how these variables affect the risk of IPV recidivism. The sample was composed of 116 individuals with hi…

Accident ahead? Difficulties of drivers with and without reading impairment recognising words and pictograms in variable message signs

2017

A timely and accurate acquisition of the information provided by variable message signs (VMS) can be crucial while driving. In the current study, we assess the difficulties of adults with dyslexia acquiring the information shown in VMS and provide evidence to discuss the controversial use of pictograms as potential countermeasures. Twenty-two adults with dyslexia and 22 matched controls completed a simulated driving session. The legibility of 12 VMS was assessed, including six text messages (e.g. "ACCIDENT") and six single pictograms (e.g. the icon for "accident ahead"). On average, participants with dyslexia started reading text messages when they were closer to the VMS. In addition, while…

Semantic distance as a critical factor in icon design for in-car infotainment systems

2017

In-car infotainment systems require icons that enable fluent cognitive information processing and safe interaction while driving. An important issue is how to find an optimised set of icons for different functions in terms of semantic distance. In an optimised icon set, every icon needs to be semantically as close as possible to the function it visually represents and semantically as far as possible from the other functions represented concurrently. In three experiments (N = 21 each), semantic distances of 19 icons to four menu functions were studied with preference rankings, verbal protocols, and the primed product comparisons method. The results show that the primed product comparisons me…

A population-based coprological study of human fascioliasis in a hyperendemic area of the Bolivian Altiplano

1997

The community of Chijipata Alta, at an altitude of 3850 m, near the southern coast of Lake Titicaca in the Northern Altiplano of Bolivia, was surveyed for human fascioliasis. The global prevalence (66.7 %) and intensity (eggs per gram of faeces - epg: range: 24-4440; arithmetic mean: IooI; geometric mean: 390) proved to be the highest known in the world by means of coprological techniques. These results suggest the existence of highly hyperendemic subzones among the large human fascioliasis-endemic zone of the Bolivian Northern Altiplano. Despite the decrease in prevalence and intensity from children (75.0%, 24-4440 epg) to adults (41.7%, 144-864 epg), our findings show that in an hyperende…

Soil-transmitted helminth infections at very high altitude in Bolivia

2001

A cross-sectional study of soil-transmitted helminthiases in the Northern Bolivian Altiplano was carried out over the 6-year period 1992-97. Prevalences, intensities and associations were analysed from coprological results obtained in 31 surveys (28 in schools and 3 in individuals of all age-groups) performed in 24 Aymara communities located between the city of La Paz and Lake Titicaca, at an altitude of 3800-4200 m. Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura were detected, with local prevalences in the range 1.2-28.0% and 0.0-24.0%, respectively. Significant differences in prevalence rates of trichuriasis were detected, with highest prevalences in male schoolchildren and in subjects aged…

Survival of patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in Germany in the early 21st century.

2012

This study provides up-to-date and detailed cancer survival estimates of German patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL, International Statistical Classification of Diseases 10th Revision [ICD-10] codes C82-C85) based on data from 11 cancer registries. Period analysis was used to calculate 5-year relative survival in 2002-2006, overall and by gender, age and histology. Comparison was made with patients with NHL in the United States (US) Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database in the same time period. Overall 5-year relative survival for patients with NHL in Germany in 2002-2006 was 62.8% and in the US was 65.1%. Survival decreased with age from 81.7% at age 15-49 to 46.5% at age…
