A survey of carbon sequestration potential of orchards and vineyards in Italy
2016
Orchards and vineyards are important land use types in Southern Europe. In spite of their potential to sequester atmospheric C and to mitigate climate change, relatively little is known regarding the influx and outflux of C in these systems. The aim of this work is to provide data on the C budget, including net primary production (NPP), C removal through production, and C sequestration potential for the vineyards and the main fruit tree species (apple, citrus, olive, and peach) grown in Italy. Standing biomass and NPP were measured, and net ecosystem exchange and net C balance assessed directly, through either eddy covariance technique, or considering NPP and heterotrophic respiration. Abov…
Soybean and casein hydrolysates induce grapevine immune responses and resistance against Plasmopara viticola
2014
International audience; Plasmopara viticola, the causal agent of grapevine downy mildew, is one of the most devastating grape pathogen in Europe and North America. Although phytochemicals are used to control pathogen infections, the appearance of resistant strains and the concern for possible adverse effects on environment and human health are increasing the search for alternative strategies. In the present investigation, we successfully tested two protein hydrolysates from soybean (soy) and casein (cas) to trigger grapevine resistance against P. viticola. On Vitis vinifera cv. Marselan plants, the application of soy and cas reduced the infected leaf surface by 76 and 63%, as compared to th…
Apprentissage automatique de réseaux d'interaction à partir de données de séquences de nouvelle génération
2022
Climate change and other human-induced processes are modifying ecosystems, globally, at an ever increasing rate. Microbial communities play an important role in the functioning ecosystems, maintaining their diversity and services. These communities are shaped by the different abiotic environmental effects to which they are subjected and the biotic interactions between all community members. The ANR Next-Generation Biomonitoring (NGB) project proposed to reconstruct interaction networks from abundance measures obtained sequencing environmental DNA (eDNA) and to use these networks to monitor ecosystem change. In this thesis, conducted as part of the NGB project, I evaluate the potential of tw…
USE OF ALGINATES OLIGOMERS TO IMPROVE PLANT PROTECTION AGAINST PATHOGENS
2021
The invention concerns the use of alginate oligomers in sequence α(1-4)Guluronane and/or ß(1-4)Mannuronane having a DP greater than 30, as an active ingredient of biocontrol products in plants, and that may be combined with another molecules such as phytohormones, against cryptogamic diseases of plants, in particular of vine (Vitis vinifera), or to protect other species against aggressors such as pathogenic microbes or insects.
POLYSACCHARIDE COMPOUNDS AND USE OF SAME FOR STIMULATING DEFENCE RESPONSES OF PLANTS AGAINST PATHOGENIC MICROORGANISMS
2020
The present invention relates to novel oligogalacturonans having a degree of methylation of 0 and a degree of polymerisation of 1 to 10, and to use there of for stimulating defence responses of plants against pathogenic microorganisms.
DISTRIBUTION OF BOTRYOSPHAERIACEAE SPECIES ASSOCIATED WITH GRAPEVINE DECLINE IN WESTERN SICILY.
2011
Recently, the pathogenicity of different Botryosphaeraceae species on grapevines has been reported from many European and extra-European areas. During summer 2008, in a Sicilian vineyard located in the Marsala area (TP), we observed a decline induced by Lasiodiplodia theobromae. The occurrence and quite rapid spread of the disease seemed to support the regional variability of the species in question, which is retained a tropical and subtropical pathogen to different trees. In the last two years, the decline syndrome has been observed in the following other grape-growing areas of western and central Sicily: Alcamo and Salemi (TP), Montevago (AG) and Milena (CL). From declining plants showing…
Characterization of grapevine defense reactions and identification of elicitors : the endopolygalacturonase 1 from Botrytis cinerea, an avirulence fu…
2002
The fight against grapevine pathogens is mainly carried out by pesticides, the continued use of which is harmful to the environment and the health of users and consumers. The main organizations in charge of viticulture set as a priority the research and use of alternatives to chemical control. However, the genetic improvement of the vine is prohibited in AOC vineyards to preserve the varietal typicity, partly responsible for the quality of the wines. In addition, research undertaken some fifteen years ago reveals that plants have their own immune defenses, which they activate on contact with the microorganisms they recognize via molecules called elicitors. In this context, the objective of …
Grapevine row orientation mediated temporal and cumulative microclimatic effects on grape berry temperature and composition
2021
Abstract Ambient radiation and temperature are global drivers of grapevine growth, grape yield and composition, and wine quality. Knowledge of the implications of vineyard row orientation/microclimate is required for decision-making in current and future macro- and mesoclimates. Temporal and cumulative microclimatic changes, induced by vine row orientation (NS; EW; NE-SW; NW-SE) of vertically trellised Shiraz grapevines, on berry pulp temperature and composition at different ripeness levels were investigated. Berries dynamically gained heat energy relative to: ambient climate/weather; direct canopy wall/bunch irradiance; and berry skin colour development. Berries exposed to direct solar rad…
Grapevine physiological response to row orientation-induced spatial radiation and microclimate changes
2020
Terroir factors and vineyard practices largely determine canopy and root system functioning. In this study, changes in soil conditions, multi-level (vertical, horizontal) light interception (quantitative, photographic, schematic, 3D modelled), leaf water potential and photosynthetic activity were measured during the grape ripening period on NS, EW, NE-SW, and NW-SE orientated (Southern Hemisphere) vertically trellised Shiraz grapevine canopies. It was hypothesised that the spatial radiation interception angle and radiation distribution of differently orientated and vertically trained grapevine rows would affect soil conditions and vine physiological activity. Soil water content showed an in…
