Oral intake of cadmium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, nickel, manganese and zinc in the university student's diet.

A duplicate diet meal study was carried out with a group of university students living in a hostel, in order to estimate the intake of Zn, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Pb. Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn and Ni were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and Cd, Co and Pb by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry after a nitric acid wet digestion procedure. The estimated intake values from the contents of breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks were compared with the values of the Provisional Tolerable Daily Intake (PTDI) in the case of Cd and Pb, Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) of Co, Fe and Zn and Estimated Safe and Adequate Dietetic Daily Intake (ESADDI) of Cu and Mn. Electronic structure of adsorbed organic molecules

We report on investigations of chiral organic molecules in the gas phase and physisorbed on graphite. The measurements were carried out by means of angle-resolving VUV photoelectron spectroscopy. The emission from specific orbitals in oriented molecules can be forbidden because of dipole selection rules. Due to the lack of certain features in the spectra, it was possible to determine the adsorption geometry of cyclohexanone and camphor as being with their ring system parallel to the surface. By comparison of gas-phase and adsorbate spectra of ethyl benzene derivatives, adsorption could be proved to be molecular without decomposition. Effect of graphene nanoplatelets on the dielectric permittivity and segmental motions of electrospun poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) nanofibers

The influence of the addition of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on the intra/inter – molecular segmental motions of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) was assessed by means of dielectric thermal analysis (DETA). The relaxation spectra were studied in terms of the dielectric permittivity (ε′) and the dielectric loss tangent (tan δ) at wide ranges of frequency (from 10−2 to 107 Hz) and temperature (from -150 to 140 °C). Two relaxation zones were disthinguished. Detection of bias errors in ETAASDetermination of copper in beer and wine samples

A method that evidences changes in the shape of the absorbance profiles obtained by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) is proposed. The method is based upon the apparent content curves model previously described for molecular spectroscopy and it permits the detection of possible sources of bias errors. Moreover, a procedure that allows to detect the existence of constant and/or proportional errors is also described. Both models has been applied to the determination of copper in wine and beer samples with and without pre-treatment of the samples. Results obtained evidence the usefulness of the proposed models.

Determination of hydrogen peroxide using glassy carbon and graphite/polyester composite electrodes modified by vanadium-doped zirconias

Abstract Synthetic monoclinic and tetragonal vanadium-doped zirconias (VZrO2) with vanadium loading ranging from 0.5 to 15 mol% are used to modify glassy carbon and graphite/polyester composite electrodes able to detect oxygen and hydrogen peroxide in neutral aqueous media. Electrodes modified by monoclinic VZrO2 decrease the overpotential for the reduction of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide in neutral and alkaline media and enhance their reduction currents with respect to unmodified carbon electrodes. Dielectric properties of graphite-based epoxy composites

International audience; Composite materials based on epoxy resin filled with various kinds of graphite particles: exfoliated graphite, natural graphite, and coarse, medium and fine artificial graphites have been prepared. Results of broadband dielectric investigations of such materials in wide temperature (25-450 K) and frequency (20 Hz-3 THz) ranges are presented. The dielectric permittivity strongly increases with graphite particle size. The graphite particle size and shape also have a strong impact on freezing temperature, conductivity activation energy and composite electromagnetic absorption properties at room temperature. Lithium adsorption at prismatic graphite surfaces enhances interlayer cohesion

Abstract We use density functional calculations to determine the binding sites and binding energies of Li + at graphene edges and prismatic graphite surfaces. Binding is favorable at bare and carbonyl terminated surfaces, but not favorable at hydrogen terminated surfaces. These findings have implications for the exfoliation of graphitic anodes in lithium-ion batteries that happens if solute and solvent co-intercalate. First, specific adsorption facilitates desolvation of Li + . Second, chemisorption lowers the surface energy by about 1 J m −2 prismatic surface area, and gives graphite additional stability against exfoliation.
