The distribution of galaxies gravitational field stemming from their tidal interaction

2015

We calculate the distribution function of astronomical objects (like galaxies and/or smooth halos of different kinds) gravitational fields due to their tidal in- teraction. For that we apply the statistical method of Chandrasekhar (1943), used there to calculate famous Holtzmark distribution. We show that in our approach the distribution function is never Gaussian, its form being dictated by the potential of interaction between objects. This calculation permits us to perform a theoretical analysis of the relation between angular momentum and mass (richness) of the galaxy clusters. To do so, we follow the idea of Catelan & Theuns (1996) and Heavens & Peacock (1988). The main differen…

Numerical Hydrodynamics and Magnetohydrodynamics in General Relativity.

2008

This article presents a comprehensive overview of numerical hydrodynamics and magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) in general relativity. Some significant additions have been incorporated with respect to the previous two versions of this review (2000, 2003), most notably the coverage of general-relativistic MHD, a field in which remarkable activity and progress has occurred in the last few years. Correspondingly, the discussion of astrophysical simulations in general-relativistic hydrodynamics is enlarged to account for recent relevant advances, while those dealing with general-relativistic MHD are amply covered in this review for the first time. The basic outline of this article is nevertheless sim…

On the super-energy radiative gravitational fields

2012

We extend our recent analysis (Ferrando J J and S\'aez J A 2012 Class. Quantum Grav. 29 075012) on the Bel radiative gravitational fields to the super-energy radiative gravitational fields defined by Garc\'{\i}a-Parrado (Class. Quantum Grav. 25 015006). We give an intrinsic characterization of the {\it new radiative fields}, and consider some distinguished classes of both radiative and non radiative fields. Several super-energy inequalities are improved.

Rigid motions relative to an observer:L-rigidity

1996

A new definition of rigidity,L-rigidity, in general relativity is proposed. This concept is a special class of pseudorigid motions and therefore it depends on the chosen curveL. It is shown that, for slow-rotation steady motions in Minkowski space, weak rigidity andL-rigidity are equivalent. The methods of the PPN approximation are considered. In this formalism, the equations that characterizeL-rigidity are expressed. As a consequence, the baryon mass density is constant in first order, the stress tensor is constant in the comoving system, the Newtonian potential is constant along the lineL, and the gravitational field is constant along the lineL in the comoving system.

CFC+: Improved dynamics and gravitational waveforms from relativistic core collapse simulations

2004

Core collapse supernovae are a promising source of detectable gravitational waves. Most of the existing (multidimensional) numerical simulations of core collapse in general relativity have been done using approximations of the Einstein field equations. As recently shown by Dimmelmeier et al (2002a,b), one of the most interesting such approximation is the so-called conformal flatness condition (CFC) of Isenberg, Wilson and Mathews. Building on this previous work we present here new results from numerical simulations of relativistic rotational core collapse in axisymmetry, aiming at improving the dynamics and the gravitational waveforms. The computer code used for these simulations evolves th…

Geons in Palatini Theories of Gravity

2017

An explicit implementation of geons in the context of gravitational theories extending general relativity is discussed in detail. Such extensions are formulated in the Palatini approach, where metric and affine connection are regarded as independent entities. This formulation is inspired on the macroscopic description of the physics of crystalline structures with defects in the context of solid-state physics, whose study can provide valuable lessons for going beyond GR. We discuss several theories for the gravitational field including additional contributions of the Ricci tensor in four and higher dimensions. As opposed to the standard metric approach, the Palatini formulation generates gho…

Method to obtain shear-free two-fluid solutions of Einstein's equations.

1989

We use the Einstein equations, stated as an initial-value problem (3+1 formalism), to present a method for obtaining a class of solutions which may be interpreted as the gravitational field produced by a mixture of two perfect fluids. The four-velocity of one of the components is assumed to be a shear-free, irrotational, and geodesic vector field. The solutions are given up to a set of a hyperbolic quasilinear system.

Mean-field correlations in the core of rich galaxy clusters

1991

We develop a theory for the contribution to the clustering correlation function from gravitational interactions of neighboring pairs of galaxies in clusters. This is based on the «Hypernetted Chain Equation», a self-consistent integral equation relating the correlation function to the interaction potential.

THE INFLUENCE OF THE MASS DISTRIBUTION OF STELLAR OBJECTS ON THEIR GRAVITATIONAL FIELDS

2020

We study the influence of the mass randomness of astronomical objects on the distribution function of their gravitational fields. Based on purely theoretical arguments and on a comparison with extensive data collected from observations and numerical simulations, we show that while mass randomness does not alter the non-Gaussian character of the gravitational field distribution, it does changes the dependencies of mean angular momenta of galaxies and clusters on their richness. The specific form of such dependencies is determined by the interplay of the character of the mass distributions and different assumptions about cluster morphology. We trace the influence of the mass distribution on t…

Gravitational waves from first order phase transitions as a probe of an early matter domination era and its inverse problem

2016

We investigate the gravitational wave background from a first order phase transition in a matter-dominated universe, and show that it has a unique feature from which important information about the properties of the phase transition and thermal history of the universe can be easily extracted. Also, we discuss the inverse problem of such a gravitational wave background in view of the degeneracy among macroscopic parameters governing the signal.
