Polisemia di nòmos e l'esordio di Hipp. de genitura
2016
Far from being, as has been said, “the bizarrest beginning of all the Hippocratic writings (...) deserving of therapy”, this paper aims to show that the opening words of the Hippocratic writing “On Generation” (νόμοϲ μὲν πάντα κρατύνει), in itself echoing a famous Pindaric motto, seem to be used first of all in order to evoke a cultural, intellectual and scientific world, in which the nòmos has become one of the most important keywords of the time. From this point of view, the Pindaric quotation seems to be played out on the wide semantic range of nòmos as well as on the ambiguous meaning of the verb κρατύνω, which in this embryological context denote specifically the consolidation and hard…
Embriologia gemellare: discorso medico e rappresentazioni collettive
2019
Twins contributed to the development of different medical theories about generation. Conceived in a single sexual relationship, thanks to an excess of seminal material, or the result of superfetation, with one or more sexual partners, twins were perceived as ambivalent beings, either as signs of abundance, or on the opposite as contrary to natural and social order because of adultery. Comparing the similarity of twins with eggs adds to their association with animality.
Euripides’Andromache, a Choral Tragedy
2013
Andromache is a choral tragedy because the singular role of the chorus in the whole play and because in its plot there is a group of couples/trios, which lead th…
Women in Aeschylean scene: a linguistic characterization
2021
This paper examines the linguistic devices by means of which Aeschylus achieved the presentation of the female characters of the Oresteia. The analysis is made after a survey of th…
