Coeval high-pressure metamorphism, thrusting, strike-slip, and extensional shearing in the Tauern Window, Eastern Alps

[1] Recent findings for a young (31.5 ± 0.7 Ma) age of high-pressure metamorphism at ∼90 km depths in the Eclogite Zone of the Tauern Window, Eastern Alps, prompt the question about the timing of the structural development of the Tauern Window and its relation to high-pressure metamorphism. We show that all major structures in the Tauern Window, resulting from strong N-S lithospheric shortening and simultaneous minor E-W extension, began developing coevally with high-pressure metamorphism in the Eclogite Zone. Lenses of spessartine quartzites (coticules) are associated with greenschist intercalations in coastal exposures at Bahia Mansa within the mainly metapsammopelitic Western Series, which forms most of the basement in the Coastal Cordillera of central to southern Chile. The chemical compositions of the coticules can be explained by protoliths formed from ferriferous and manganiferous hydrothermal precipitates mixed with aluminous alteration-derived material on top of oceanic crust. The peak conditions of metamorphism were calculated with multivariant reactions: 270–370 °C, 6–8 kbar. Significant along-strike variations have locked large parts of the Alpine subduction complex in the Eastern Mediterranean in the Eocene, and defined the end of high-pressure accretion in western Turkey. Structural analysis reveals that the Anatolide belt in western Turkey formed under greenschist facies metamorphic conditions in the Eocene when a high-pressure metamorphic fragment of the Adriatic plate (the Cycladic blueschist unit) was thrust onto the imbricated mid-crustal units of the Anatolian microcontinent (the Menderes nappes). Mylonitic structures related to two orogenic events are described from the upper and lower contacts of the Combin zone and the immediately overlying upper Austroalpine Dent Blanche nappe/Mont Mary klippe and the directly underlying lower Austroalpine Etirol-Levaz slice. The first event, Late Eocene in age, commenced during blueschist facies P-T conditions, but pre-dated the peak of subsequent greenschist facies overprint. The Río San Juan metamorphic complex exposes a segment of a high-pressure subduction-accretionary complex built during Caribbean island arc-North America continental margin convergence. It is composed of accreted arc- and oceanic-derived metaigneous rocks, serpentinized peridotites and minor metasediments forming a structural pile. Deformation textures and c-axis preferred orientations of quartz phenocrysts from porphyric dikes of the Alpine »Root Zone« have been formed under conditions of greenschist to low amphibolite facies. It is shown that the deformation textures as shear planes and kink bands, boudins, grain boundary sutures, subgrains, coarse and fine recrystallized grains, deformation lamellae and fractures are developed in a chronological sequence during first increasing and later decreasing temperatures. The c-axis orientations are chiefly influenced by kinking during the early stage of metamorphism and later by recrystallization but not by the initial orientations of the c-axes. Abstract The Shagou Shear Zone south of Xian (Shaanxi Province) is a branch of the Shangdan Fault Zone in the Qinling Belt and documents ductile deformation that affected granitoid rocks. Mylonitization took place under conditions of the lower amphibolite facies at temperatures of ca. 530°C, followed by a phase of stagnation, still under the same metamorphic conditions. The last deformation was a weak event during retrogressive greenschist metamorphism. The basement of the Southern Alps (northern Italy) belongs to the southernmost part of the European Variscan mountain belt. In contrast to other areas of the Alps, the post-Variscan metamorphic and tectonic overprint is weak and therefore permits the unravelling of the Variscan tectonometamorphic evolution of this region. Overprinting criteria and the mapping of the penetrative structural elements (S2 and L2) allow three deformational events to be distinguished. Abstract We report on the first occurrence of Pan-African eclogite from the Mozambique belt of northern Malawi, east-central Africa. We describe aspects of (1) the pattern of Pan-African transcurrent and subhorizontal shear zones and how these shear zones relate to eclogite-facies metamorphism and (2) the P – T – t evolution of the eclogite. Finally, we discuss the significance of eclogite-facies metamorphism and shear-zone deformation for the assembly of Gondwana. Abstract The Lower Ugab and Goantagab structural domains are located at the junction between the N–S trending Kaoko and the E–W trending Damara belts (NW Namibia), where Neoproterozoic metavolcano-sedimentary sequences were intruded by several syenitic/granitic plutons. We present here new U–Pb ages on zircon grains from the Voetspoor and Doros plutons. Together with petrological, geochemical and structural data we evaluate the timing of the deformation and relation to the geodynamics during the final stage of Gondwana amalgamation.
