Reshaping the sea-land interface through sustainable mobility: a project for a greenway in western Sicily

2018

This work illustrates the planning experience, still underway, carried out by five municipalities of western Sicily (Italy) in the preparation of a sustainable urban development strategy in the framework of the EU’s urban agenda 2014-2020. The strategy, whose general objectives are strengthening territorial cohesion and increasing accessibility to local resources, focuses on sustainable mobility corridors in coastal areas as the instruments through which such objectives can be better achieved and reciprocally integrated. After an exploration of the literature, the article provides an analysis of the potential demand for sustainable mobility in the given urban system, an explanation of the c…

Palermo Blue/Green Gateway. Nove porte per la knowledge city

2015

A WEB-GIS for the choice of the path in the regional greenways

2010

Tourists seem less interested in the traditional sites of mass tourism, which has damaged local identities. The tourist reclaims the old function of journey, intent on widening his knowledge of the surrounding territory, while respecting the social and cultural equality of other population. This study outlines a methodology to identify the generalized cost for a system of no-motorized transport in order to determine the modal choice of users and the route of minimum cost to reach the desired destination. Within the information users, a key role is played by telematics now widely accessible through web interfaces. With the word greenways we mean the network for the no-motorized constituted b…

A 'gateway city' between landscape and cultural heritage

2015

The paper analyzes the achievable strategic role that the porto of Porto Empedocle (sinergy by Agrigento, its "city mother") could have. This marginal city, localized in the center of the African side of the Sicily, is far from European politics, but this situation could change. It's necessary to improve the sea routes and to activate the disused railway line from Porto Empedocle to Castelvetrano (near Trapani). This solution will help the accessibility of Agrigento and the development of the little coastal towns organized in a slow and sustainable network. Que…

The role of greenways in the sustainable mobility development: The study case of western municipalities of Sicily

2018

As is known, mobility policies based on greenways represent an effective and comprehensive response to the demand for travel and recreation and to environmental protection as well. There are several reasons why spreading cycling mobility contributes to making cities more liveable: a more efficient urban transport system, less congested roads and, consequently, less noisy roads, more security on the roads, etc. Furthermore, cycling helps fight climate change and the conservation of fossil fuels, promotes forms of sustainable tourism development and, not least, physical activity and, thus, the health of citizens. Whereas greenways may constitute a strategic opportunity for the promotion of la…

THE DEVELOPMENT AND FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY OF A TOURIST NETWORK FOR A COASTAL REGION

2016

This study springs from a reflection on the concept of the Slow Network as a tool to strengthen the connection between a territory and its inhabitants, through the rediscovery of the agro-environmental, landscape, historical, artistic, and cultural value of each territory. Creating a slow network means utilising slow mean of mobility thus creating a "greenway" to give life to an ecomuseum and to cultural tourism in an eco-sustainable manner. The resources of an area are enhanced by creating a synergy between them, the tourism industry, and the local economy, which is dedicated to the promotion of an integrated tourism that involves rural areas, natural areas, eno gastronomic tours, and them…

STRATEGIE E CRITERI PROGETTUALI PER LA CONVERSIONE DI LINEE FERROVIARIE DISMESSE IN PERCORSI VERDI

2009
