A NEW REPRESENTATION OF ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS OPERATION USING FOURIER THEORY IN OPTIMAL SMART GRIDS MANAGEMENT

2012

This paper investigates the possibility to use a new modeling of Energy Storage Systems based on zero integral functions. Such functions represent the course of the energy level stored in batteries during the solution of optimal management problems in smart-grids. Storage devices, such as all the other components that are required to meet an integral capacity constraint along the dispatch time, must show the same State of Charge at the start and at the end of the timeframe considered for operation. In this paper, a set of sinusoidal functions have been used for the synthesis of the charge and discharge course of energy Storage Systems. Such representation allows to eliminate the difficult c…

Optimal Set Points Regulation of Distributed Generation Units in Micro-grids under Islanded Operation

2010

The present work studies the problem of optimizing the power production levels of dispersed generation units in islanded microgrids. The problem is intrinsically multi-objective with non linear objectives and constraints, thus the solution approach is based on evolutionary optimization and uses the Non dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II. The objectives are calculated based on the solution of the load flow problem. The latter problem is more complicated when in the considered system a physical node with a sufficiently large production capability is not available, because all the generation node of the systems have similar and limited generation capability. In this paper, the issue has be…

Frequency constrained optimal Power Flow based on Glow-worm Swarm Optimization in Islanded Microgrids

2015

This work presents an application of a swarm optimization method to solve the optimal power flow problem taking into account the constraints of frequency and line ampacity in three-phase islanded Microgrids. Each generation unit is equipped with a Power Electronics Interface. In the considered formulation, the droop control parameters are considered as variables to be adjusted by a higher control level, while the frequency is kept in rated bounds. Another typical constraint for OPF formulation, the max ampacity of each line, is also considered. Two case studies with different dimensions and electrical features have been considered and the obtained results show the efficiency of the proposed…

A non-hydrostatic pressure distribution solver for the nonlinear shallow water equations over irregular topography

2016

Abstract We extend a recently proposed 2D depth-integrated Finite Volume solver for the nonlinear shallow water equations with non-hydrostatic pressure distribution. The proposed model is aimed at simulating both nonlinear and dispersive shallow water processes. We split the total pressure into its hydrostatic and dynamic components and solve a hydrostatic problem and a non-hydrostatic problem sequentially, in the framework of a fractional time step procedure. The dispersive properties are achieved by incorporating the non-hydrostatic pressure component in the governing equations. The governing equations are the depth-integrated continuity equation and the depth-integrated momentum equation…

Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations, Difference Equations, and Dynamic Equations on Time Scales

2016

We are pleased to present this special issue. This volume reflects an increasing interest in the analysis of qualitative behavior of solutions to differential equations, difference equations, and dynamic equations on time scales. Numerous applications arising in the engineering and natural sciences call for the development of new efficient methods and for the modification and refinement of known techniques that should be adjusted for the analysis of new classes of problems. The twofold goal of this special issue is to reflect both the state-of-the-art theoretical research and important recent advances in the solution of applied problems.

Optimal Sizing and Siting of Distributed Energy Resources Considering Public and Private Incentive Policies

2008

The present work presents the formulation and solution approach for the problem of optimal sizing and siting of distributed energy resources based on Photovoltaic, PV, technology. The considered system is an isolated grid (small island) and the parts involved are the utility and the customers. As it happens in islands, the same utility generates and delivers energy to customers, for this reason, the installation of dispersed generation units is beneficial for reducing power losses, regularizing the voltage profile, but also for increasing the profit. The problem is solved by means of the Non dominated sorting Genetic Algorithm II, NSGA-II, identifying the optimal size and location of PV sys…

Modelling energy storage systems using Fourier analysis: An application for smart grids optimal management

2014

In this paper, a new and efficient model for variables representation, named F-coding, in optimal power dispatch problems for smart electrical distribution grids is proposed. In particular, an application devoted to optimal energy dispatch of Distributed Energy Resources including ideal storage devices is here considered. Electrical energy storage systems, such as any other component that must meet an integral capacity constraint in optimal dispatch problems, have to show the same energy level at the beginning and at the end of the considered timeframe for operation. The use of zero-integral functions, such as sinusoidal functions, for the synthesis of the charge and discharge course of bat…

Two-level Schwarz method for unilateral variational inequalities

1999

The numerical solution of variational inequalities of obstacle type associated with second-order elliptic operators is considered. Iterative methods based on the domain decomposition approach are proposed for discrete obstacle problems arising from the continuous, piecewise linear finite element approximation of the differential problem. A new variant of the Schwarz methodology, called the two-level Schwarz method, is developed offering the possibility of making use of fast linear solvers (e.g., linear multigrid and fictitious domain methods) for the genuinely nonlinear obstacle problems. Namely, by using particular monotonicity results, the computational domain can be partitioned into (mes…

Pareto-optimal Glowworm Swarms Optimization for Smart Grids Management

2013

This paper presents a novel nature-inspired multi-objective optimization algorithm. The method extends the glowworm swarm particles optimization algorithm with algorithmical enhancements which allow to identify optimal pareto front in the objectives space. In addition, the system allows to specify constraining functions which are needed in practical applications. The framework has been applied to the power dispatch problem of distribution systems including Distributed Energy Resources (DER). Results for the test cases are reported and discussed elucidating both numerical and complexity analysis.

Fixed domain approaches in shape optimization problems

2012

This work is a review of results in the approximation of optimal design problems, defined in variable/unknown domains, based on associated optimization problems defined in a fixed ?hold-all? domain, including the family of all admissible open sets. The literature in this respect is very rich and we concentrate on three main approaches: penalization?regularization, finite element discretization on a fixed grid, controllability and control properties of elliptic systems. Comparison with other fixed domain approaches or, in general, with other methods in shape optimization is performed as well and several numerical examples are included.
