Shape Reconstruction of Metallic Objects by Artificial Vision

1997

Quality control in industrial applications has greatly benefited from the development of tools like artificial vision. The artificial vision approach of quality control has the advantage of being able to perform both non-destructive and contactless controls as well as to work mostly in real time. However, in the case of non planar objects to be controlled, dimensional control may become hard to realize. Indeed, due to the bidimensional aspect of the images, a loss of information is unavoidable. Consequently, obtaining depth information from a planar image is not obvious. Most of the existing methods use several cameras1 or several light sources2, this leads to an increase in the processing …

Splitting criterion for hierarchical motion estimation based on perceptual coding

1998

A new entropy-constrained motion estimation scheme using variable-size block matching is proposed. It is known that fixed-size block matching as used in most video codec standards is improved by using a multiresolution or multigrid approach. In this work, it is shown that further improvement is possible in terms of both the final bit rate achieved and the robustness of the predicted motion field if perceptual coding is taken into account in the motion estimation phase. The proposed scheme is compared against other variable- and fixed-size block matching algorithms.

Sustainable integration of Renewable Energy Systems in a Mediterranean island: a case study

2013

Starting from a previous technical and economical feasi-bility study, this paper analyzes the integration of Renewable Energy Sources into an existing territory with specified features of the natu-ral landscape and of the built environment. The work puts into evi-dence that territories development must use suitable tools and rules based on integrated knowledge, since technical feasibility studies do not assess the sustainability of the proposed infrastructures within the built environment and landscape. The studied system is in the is-land of Pantelleria situated between Sicily and northern Africa.

Implementation of a PLC Field Analyzer on a G3 Modem Platform

2021

Nowadays, power line communications (PLC) are a widely used technology in distribution grids, both for automatic meter reading and automation applications. PLC performances (in terms of capacity, coverage, robustness, and data transmission rate) can be significantly affected by electrical network topologies, connected loads and disturbances. Thus, utilities and modem manufacturers are increasing their interest in electrical network characterization. In this framework, a software tool is proposed in this paper to measure received signal and noise levels. As case study, it is implemented on a G3 PLC transceiver, widely used for smart metering purposes. In this way, a PLC channel characterizat…

The Impact of Solar Penetration on Solar and Gas Market Value: An Application to the Italian Power Market

2014

We assess the impact of solar penetration in the Italian wholesale electricity market on the market value of solar with respect to gas sources, measured as the ratio between the relative price they respectively earn and the average daily electricity price (value factor). We find that, on average, an increase of solar generation has a negative impact on the price earned by solar producers, thus causing a marginal departure from the grid parity condition. The relation between solar production and its market value is not constant over the years, while it depends on the degree of solar penetration. It is positive for very low levels of solar production while, as production increases, its margin…

Grid production with the ATLAS Event Service

2018

ATLAS has developed and previously presented a new computing architecture, the Event Service, that allows real time delivery of fine grained workloads which process dispatched events (or event ranges) and immediately streams outputs. The principal aim was to profit from opportunistic resources such as commercial cloud, supercomputing, and volunteer computing, and otherwise unused cycles on clusters and grids. During the development and deployment phase, its utility also on the grid and conventional clusters for the exploitation of otherwise unused cycles became apparent. Here we describe our experience commissioning the Event Service on the grid in the ATLAS production system. We study the …

Large-eddy simulations of turbulent flow with heat transfer in simple and complex geometries using Harwell-FLOW3D

1996

Abstract Large-eddy simulation (LES) results are presented and discussed for the turbulent flow with heat transfer in different geometrical configurations, including a plane channel, a channel bearing transverse square ribs on one of the walls, and a crossed-corrugated air heater. They were obtained using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code Harwell-FLOW3D (Release 2), finite-volume grids having up to 423 nodes, and the Smagorinsky subgrid model with several variants regarding near-wall damping and wall boundary conditions. The first problem (plane turbulent Poiseuille flow with heat transfer) was mainly used as a benchmark to investigate the influence of numerical methods (pressure-…

Predictive Model of Energy Consumption of a Home

2020

The usage of the renewable energy sources and electric vehicles is rising which might result in a problem with the energy grid stabilization. Some works state that buildings contribute to the overall energy consumption by 20–40% which makes them a great subject to study. Finding solutions for better energy management can have a significant impact on the energy sector. This work focuses on proposing a simplified model of a home considering main appliances, heating and cooling, a photovoltaic system, an electric vehicle and weather and solar irradiance forecasts. The model is created in MATLAB as a simulation script with defined parameters. It uses a 5 day weather forecast to predict energy d…

Field testing of repurposed electric vehicle batteries for price-driven grid balancing

2019

Abstract As electric cars become more widespread, the disposal and recycling of used batteries will become an important challenge. Typically, vehicle batteries are replaced if their capacity drops to 70–80% of initial capacity. However, they may still be useful for stationary applications. In this paper, results from a field test of a molten salt high-temperature electric vehicle battery repurposed as stationary storage for grid balancing are presented. In a previous study, we have shown that a mixed integer linear programming control strategy driven by a spot-market price for electricity is best suited for an implementation on hardware with limited computational resources. A 14-day experim…
