Learning main drivers of crop progress and failure in Europe with interpretable machine learning

2021

Abstract A wide variety of methods exist nowadays to address the important problem of estimating crop yields from available remote sensing and climate data. Among the different approaches, machine learning (ML) techniques are being increasingly adopted, since they allow exploiting all the information on crop progress and environmental conditions and their relations with crop yield, achieving reliable and accurate estimations. However, interpreting the relationships learned by the ML models, and hence getting insights about the problem, remains a complex and usually unexplored task. Without accountability, confidence and trust in the ML models can be compromised. Here, we develop interpretab…

2d GPR and geoelectrical modelling: tests on man–made tunnels and cavities

2005

B036 2D GPR AND GEOELECTRICAL MODELLING: TESTS ON MAN–MADE TUNNELS AND CAVITIES Introduction 1 Many engineering and environmental projects require geophysical exploration to minimize the geological risk connected with the presence of natural or artificial tunnels and cavities (air and/or water filled). Many studies have been carried out to optimize the procedures to investigate these cavities using many geophysical methods (Beres et al. 2001; Li et al. 2004). In this paper we like to confirm the reliability of combined geophysical methodologies (GPR and ERT) and relative modelling to detect and locate cavities in a particular site (Marsala Western Sicily) where

Spectral band selection for vegetation properties retrieval using Gaussian processes regression

2020

Abstract With current and upcoming imaging spectrometers, automated band analysis techniques are needed to enable efficient identification of most informative bands to facilitate optimized processing of spectral data into estimates of biophysical variables. This paper introduces an automated spectral band analysis tool (BAT) based on Gaussian processes regression (GPR) for the spectral analysis of vegetation properties. The GPR-BAT procedure sequentially backwards removes the least contributing band in the regression model for a given variable until only one band is kept. GPR-BAT is implemented within the framework of the free ARTMO's MLRA (machine learning regression algorithms) toolbox, w…

Geophysical investigations at the Himera archaeological site, northern Sicily

2007

In this paper we present a geophysical survey that was carried out as a research activity during field trips to the Himera archaeological site, where relics of a large Greek settlement are still buried, effected by a joint group of archaeologists and geophysicists during an educational project. Two-dimensional (2D) resistivity and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were performed to locate buried archaeological structures at this archaeological site. The results of the GPR surveys show some anomalies characterized by semi-hyperbolic shapes. In some restricted areas of the town, two grids of parallel GPR profiles were acquired while time- and depth-slices were calculated to identify the …

Geophysical and geotechnical investigations to support the restoration project of the Roman ‘Villa del Casale’, Piazza Armerina, Sicily, Italy

2011

A multidisciplinary geophysical and geotechnical study, including some non-invasive geophysical applications, was carried out during the restoration of the ‘Villa del Casale’, a Roman villa discovered near Piazza Armerina (Sicily, Italy) in 1929, famous for its Roman floor mosaics. The project aims were to characterize the geology of the subsoil and provide information for solving the main building structural problems including the subsidence of some parts of the floor and the detachment of the tesserae (i.e., the tiles) of the mosaics. Another goal was the detailed study of the underground structures of the Corridor of the Great Hunt, a part of the villa strongly affected by subsidence and…

Estimating the phenological dynamics of irrigated rice leaf area index using the combination of PROSAIL and Gaussian Process Regression

2021

The growth of rice is a sequence of three different phenological phases. This sequence of change in rice phenology implies that the condition of the plant during the vegetative phase relates directly to the health of leaves functioning during the reproductive and ripening phases. As such, accurate monitoring is important towards understanding rice growth dynamics. Leaf Area Index (LAI) is an important indicator of rice yields and the availability of this information during key phenological phases can support more informed farming decisions. Satellite remote sensing has been adopted as a proxy to field measurements of LAI and with the launch of freely available high resolution Satellite imag…

Acoustic Environmental Monitoring System for Acoustic Maps

2008

In this work, it is developed a data acquisition and analysis system for the monitoring of acoustic environmental noises and the elaboration of dynamic acoustic maps. This project is based on the obtaining of acoustic data in different measure points, and it is formed by a mesh of connections based on GPRS NODES and a Software Server for the administration and control of the data.

Identifying sedimentary structures and spatial distribution of tsunami deposits with GPR - examples from Spain and Greece

2011

Shallow drilling in coastal areas like southern Spain and different parts of Greece (Corinth region and Argolis Gulf) proved evidence for tsunamis. Sedimentary analyses were conducted to identify tsunamigenic deposits, but did not reveal sedimentary structures or spatial distribution of tsunamites in a regional scale. Since drilling is time-intensive and expensive (depending on extend), this method can by far not cover an entire coastal area. On the other hand, distribution and preservation of tsunamigenic deposits seems to be highly variable. We used ground penetrating radar (GPR) in combination with electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) measurements and sedimentological research methods…
