On the de-energization of over-head low-voltage lines under high-impedance fault conditions

2018

Downed distribution conductors in overhead distribution systems, may not be a concern for equipment, but greatly challenge the safety of persons, as well as the integrity of properties. Upstream overcurrent protective devices may not be able to detect the magnitudes of fault currents resulting from these high-impedance faults. Even though protective devices capable to detect such faults have been available on the market, not all the utilities have equipped their stations with these products, likely due to the costs. In this paper, the authors formalize the problem, and propose a possible cost-effective solution for the low-voltage over-head lines with neutral wire. Such solution includes a …

Was heißt wie? Ansatz und Glossar zu Befundung und Verständnis in der HRCT der Lunge

1996

In HRCT reports multiple different, often synonymous, German and English terms are used. The variety of terms impede understanding and acceptance of HRCT. Purpose of this paper is to present a scheme, which is based on the anatomic landmarks (secondary lobule), and the density of pathologic changes, as well as a glossary from the German HRCT-literature, including suitable terms, definitions, synonyms and English terms. Low attenuation changes include emphysemas, air-filled cavities (bullae, cysts, cavitations, honeycombing) and bronchial dilatation, changes with increased density consist of diffuse (ground glass opacity, consolidation) and focal processes (reticular and nodular densities). …

Modified LACIF filtering in background disjoint noise

2011

Abstract This work deals with pattern recognition methods based on correlations for images in the presence of noise. We propose a modification of the nonlinear Locally Adaptive Contrast Invariant Filter (LACIF) that yields correlation peaks that are invariant to linear intensity changes of the target but that has some limitations in the presence low variance nonoverlapping background noise. The modification of the filter implies a normalization by a global variance of several distributions. The estimation of the variance distributions is done locally by means of correlations. Experimental results as well as comparisons with the classical matched filter and the common LACIF are given.

Human-Animal Relationships in Supported Housing: Animal Atmospheres for Mental Health Recovery

2021

Being in a relationship with an animal can promote the well-being of people. For many individuals, this usually takes place at home. This study reports about homes for people with mental health problems (with or without co-occurring substance use), who live in supported housing operated by public landlords, entailing tenancies that are usually stricter regarding their pet policies than ordinary homes. We thus addressed the following research questions through ethnographic fieldwork at seven distinct places: which types of human–animal relationships occur in supported housing, and how do they affect the tenants? We analyzed the collected data informed by the Grounded Theory approach and foun…

Stochastic Graph Filtering Under Asymmetric Links in Wireless Sensor Networks

2018

Wireless sensor networks (WSN s) are often characterized by random and asymmetric packet losses due to the wireless medium, leading to network topologies that can be modeled as random, time-varying and directed graphs. Most of existing works related to graph filtering in the context of WSNs assume that the probability of delivering an information from one node to a neighbor node is the same as in the reverse direction. This assumption is not realistic due to the typical link asymmetry in WSNs caused by interferences and background noise. In this work, we analyze the problem of applying stochastic graph filtering over random time-varying asymmetric network topologies. We show that it is poss…

Domestication of a laptop on a wireless university campus: a case study

2010

<span>This study reports how university students domesticate their personal laptops at the beginning of studies on a wireless campus. The aim was to examine how students integrate the laptop into their personal education experience, what sort of processes were experienced to render the laptop useful and meaningful, and how gender and IT proficiency influenced this process. Qualitative interview data with twenty students (identified and selected by quantitative survey) was analysed using the grounded theory approach during which a multi-aspect domestication process was identified. Results highlight the importance of a structured way of organising laptop initiatives in universities. It …

The safety of an industrial archaeological heritage

2013

The present paper analyses an underground and inactive quarry of calcarenite, which belong to a localised area called Cave di calcarenite in Contrada Cuccidenna that has been recognised as a typical example of industrial archaeological heritage. The study of this typical quarry is finalised to the preservation and safe fruition of this site, which represents the history of manufacturing technologies of rocky ashlars. Rock samples from the pillars have been collected and, at first, a petrographic characterisation has been performed. The strength parameters have been estimated by means of triaxial and isotropic compression tests. Through a finite element analysis, the mechanical characterizat…

Theorizing a one-semester real customer student software project course

2011

Project courses in software engineering education have, roughly speaking, as long a history as the term software engineering itself — about 40 years. Several project course models have been described in the literature, including the research target of the dissertation, a one-semester course where students develop software in small groups for real customers. The long history of the research field constitutes a challenge for new research. The research approach of this dissertation is theorizing in the sense of classical grounded theory. The motivation behind this theorizing approach was the possibility of finding fresh viewpoints in a long-established research field and a need to give structure …

Effects of ligand substitution on the excited state dynamics of the Ru(dcbpy)(CO)2I2 complex

2003

Abstract Spectroscopic evidence suggest [PCCP 3 (2001) 1992] that illumination with visible light of the [trans-I-Ru(dcbpy)(CO)2I2] (dcbpy= 4,4′-dicarboxy-2,2′-bipyridine) complex in solution induces dissociation of a CO group followed by reorganization of the ligands and attachment of a solvent molecule. In the present study, we report results on excited state dynamics of this ruthenium complex and its photoproduct. Femtosecond transient absorption measurements reveal dominance of excited state absorption of the reactant and the photoproduct [cis-I-Ru(dcbpy)(CO)(Sol)I2] (Sol=ethanol or acetonitrile) in the visible spectral region. The time-resolved measurements for the reactant at 77 K ind…
