Decreasing sea ice and increasing marine navigability in northern latitudes have changed Arctic ship traffic patterns in recent years and are predicted to increase annual ship traffic in the Arctic in the future. Guaranteed lower bounds for cost functionals of time-periodic parabolic optimization problems

In this paper, a new technique is shown for deriving computable, guaranteed lower bounds of functional type (minorants) for two different cost functionals subject to a parabolic time-periodic boundary value problem. Together with previous results on upper bounds (majorants) for one of the cost functionals, both minorants and majorants lead to two-sided estimates of functional type for the optimal control problem. An OFDM Receiver Exploiting Multipath Diversity

We propose a novel receiver structure, to be employed with standard Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing transmitters, capable of exploiting the multipath diversity of wireless channels. The proposed technique is based on cancellation of inter-block interference arising in the guard interval and linear detection techniques. It features a low implementation complexity and is easily generalized to MIMO systems and non-linear detection techniques.
Nitric oxide production in tobacco leaf cells: a generalized stress response?

The function of nitric oxide (NO), a gaseous free radical emitted by many plants, is incompletely understood. In the present study the hypothesis that NO generation, like that of the reactive oxygen species, occurs as a general response to different environmental cues was tested. Leaf peels and mesophyll cell suspensions of Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xanthi were loaded with the NO-specific fluorophore, diaminofluorescein, and subjected to an abiotic stressor. Light stress and mechanical injury had no apparent effect on NO production. The ARGO-YBJ experiment in Tibet

The setting up of the ARGO detector at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a.s.l., Tibet, P.R. China) has been completed during the last spring (2007). It consists of a central carpet made of 130 identical sub-units of 12 RPCs each (a "cluster"), covering a surface of about 5800 m2 with 93% active area, and a guard ring of 24 further clusters of the same type surrounding the central carpet with a lower sampling density. Signals are picked up by external electrodes of small size, thus allowing the sampling of EAS with high space-time granularity. Shower events are detected at a trigger rate of about 4 kHz. El artículo propone una relación entre el artista ruso Marc Chagall y pintores protorrenacentistas considerando las citas respecto a ellos hechas en la autobiografía del artista contemporáneo. En particular, se indaga cómo dichas referencias permiten entender cómo Chagall observó y representó a partir de estos artistas, particularmente Giotto. El análisis de sus pinturas demuestra cómo lo que tradicionalmente ha sido interpretado como un influjo del cubismo puede también leerse a partir de una relación con los primitivos italianos. (A)

Due to a militarised society between 1804 and 1915, the weight of the warlords was heavy in the foundation and maintenance of the Haitian constitutional order. Their mission as guardians is apparent since the Constitution of 1801, and the military was not content to monopolise the supreme magistracy until the US occupation in 1915. Institutional practice, however, leaves much to be desired.
