Is trans-cranial MR-guided Focused UltraSound a repeatable treatment option? Report of a successfully re-treated patient

2018

Background: In recent years, transcranial Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused UltraSounds (tcMRgFUS) treatments for functional neurological disorders are giving a new thrust to the field of therapeutic brain lesioning. This technique has been proven safe and effective in selected patients. Here we present the case of a patient affected by tremor combined with parkinsonism who underwent a second tcMRgFUS thalamotomy because of relapsing tremor after a few months from the first tcMRgFUS treatment. Materials and Methods: A 72-year-old, right-handed man, who came to our observation because of a disabling tremor affecting mainly his upper right limb and refusing any invasive surgical procedure. Hi…

Advanced Signal Processing for Ultrasonic Structural Monitoring of Waveguides, in Bridge Maintenance, Safety Management, Health Monitoring and Inform…

2008

Ultrasonic Guided Waves (UGWs) are a useful tool in those structural health monitoring applications that can benefit from built-in transduction, moderately large inspection ranges and high sensitivity to small flaws. This paper describes a damage detection method, based on wavelet transform and outlier analysis for structural waveguides. The method combines the advantages of UGW inspection with the outcomes of the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) that is used for extracting defect-sensitive features that can be combined to perform a multivariate diagnosis of damage. In particular, the DWT is exploited to generate a set of relevant wavelet coefficients to construct a uni-dimensional or multi…

Analog Photonic Fractional Signal Processing

2018

In this work, we provide an up to date overview on the subject of photonic fractional signal processing, including both, in-fiber and waveguide on-chip technology. Thus, we discuss in detail fractional differentiation, fractional integration, fractional Hilbert transforms, and finally, fractional Fourier transforms. In each case, the underlying mathematical principles are explained for each operation, together with a short historical discussion in the context of classical optics. After that, the different proposals to perform these operations photonically on the complex field envelope of a given light pulse are presented, divided according to its working principle. Finally, current applicat…

Polarization Insensitive Wavelength Conversion in a Low-Birefringence SiGe Waveguide

2016

We report the first demonstration of a single-pass dual-orthogonal-pump four-wave mixing-based wavelength conversion scheme in a silicon-based waveguide. The silicon germanium waveguide used was designed to exhibit strong TE/TM mode similarity across a broad wavelength range as well as a large nonlinear coefficient. A polarization-dependent loss of just 0.42 dB was measured, and the conversion of 40-Gb/s differential phase-shift keying signals was demonstrated with 1.5-dB power penalty at a bit error ratio of $10^{-9}$ .

PSA-based phase regeneration of DPSK signals in a silicon germanium waveguide

2015

We demonstrate a polarization-assisted PSA-based phase regenerator in a passive low-birefringence SiGe waveguide at low CW pump power. A PSER of 28.6-dB enables a six-fold reduction in phase-error and BER improvement of approximately 2-dB in the regenerated signal.

Optical tweezing using tunable optical lattices along a few-mode silicon waveguide

2018

International audience; Fourteen years ago, optical lattices and holographic tweezers were considered as a revolution, allowing for trapping andmanipulating multiple particles at the same time using laser light. Since then, near-field optical forces have arousedtremendous interest as they enable efficient trapping of a wide range of objects, from living cells to atoms, in integrateddevices. Yet, handling at will multiple objects using a guided light beam remains a challenging task for current on-chipoptical trapping techniques. We demonstrate here on-chip optical trapping of dielectric microbeads and bacteria usingone-dimensional optical lattices created by near-field mode beating along a f…

Towards an analytical framework for tailoring supercontinuum generation.

2016

A fully analytical toolbox for supercontinuum generation relying on scenarios without pulse splitting is presented. Furthermore, starting from the new insights provided by this formalism about the physical nature of direct and cascaded dispersive wave emission, a unified description of this radiation in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes is derived. Previously unidentified physics of broadband spectra reported in earlier works is successfully explained on this basis. Finally, a foundry-compatible few-millimeters-long silicon waveguide allowing octave-spanning supercontinuum generation pumped at telecom wavelengths in the normal dispersion regime is designed, hence showcasing the p…
