Efficient Analysis and Design Strategies for Evanescent Mode Ridge Waveguide Filters
2006
In this paper, a research on the compromises arisen in the design of traditional evanescent mode waveguide filters is carried out. As a result, clear design methodologies for optimizing length, losses, power handling and spurious-free out-of-band response are developed. In addition, an efficient and very accurate modal analysis tool for this kind of structures is presented. Several filters have been designed according to the different strategies proposed, and a prototype has been finally manufactured. Measurements and filter dimensions validate the proposed design procedures.
Efficient CAD of Optimal Multi-Port Junctions Loaded with Partial-Height Cylindrical Posts using the 3D BI-RME Method
2005
A rigorous full-wave technique based on the 3D BI-RME (Boundary Integral-Resonant Mode Expansion) method for the analysis and design of compensated waveguide junctions is presented. This method is used to investigate the electrical performance of right-angled bends and rectangular waveguide T-junctions loaded with partial-height cylindrical posts, with the aim of extending the typical usable bandwidths of such components. It is found that the electrical performance of a two-way power divider can be significantly improved by considering a post displaced along the symmetry plane of the structure. Therefore, this contribution reveals a new crucial design parameter not considered in previous wo…

Full-wave FDTD design and analysis of wideband microstrip-to-waveguide transitions
2003
Wideband transitions are designed and analysed by using two different approaches of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, in combination with the theory of nonuniform transmission lines. These transitions consist of a ridged waveguide-based taper between a shielded microstrip and a standard X-band rectangular waveguide. In the first step, a full-wave 2D-FDTD scheme is used to calculate the dispersion characteristics, as well as the geometry dependence of the impedance in the double ridged waveguide. Once these design curves have been obtained, the stepped transmission line transformer theory is used to design the tapers. In a former step, the nonuniform 3D-FDTD technique is appli…
The Global Grounding System: Definitions and guidelines
2015
The present paper presents the preliminary results of the ongoing Italian METERGLOB project on the contribution given by the exposed conductive parts to a Global Grounding System. One of the expected results of METERGLOB is to carry out guidelines for the identification of a Global Grounding System. These guidelines must be defined on the basis of the definitions and methods present in the current international standards on grounding and safety. In the paper some definitions and elements to be taken into account for the identification of a Global Grounding System are given.
TRANS-CRANIAL MRI-GUIDED FOCUSED ULTRASOUND SURGERY (TCMRGFUS): ITALIAN AND WORLD-FIRST EXPERIENCE AT 1.5 TESLA
2016
Introduction: Transcranial magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound surgery (tcMRgFUS) is a promising new technology for the noninvasive treatment of various brain disorders. Here, we present our preliminary results achieved with the first Italian installation of a transcranial MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery (tcMRgFUS) certified system for functional neurosurgery. Technical issues faced to achieve a safe and effective treatment will be discussed focusing on MR high-resolution live imaging and thermometry sequences optimization. Materials and Methods: Patient enrollment was based on indication for functional neurosurgery and evidence of medication-refractory disease; a detailed me…
Diagnosis of chronic anaemia in gastrointestinal disorders: a guideline by the Italian Association of Hospital Gastroenterologists and Endoscopists (…
2019
Anaemia is a common pathologic condition, present in almost 5% of the adult population. Iron deficiency is the most common cause; other mechanisms can be involved, making anaemia a multi-factorial disorder in most cases. Anaemia being a frequent manifestation in the diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, patients are often referred to gastroenterologists. Furthermore, upper and lower endoscopy and enteroscopy are pivotal to the diagnostic roadmap of anaemia. In spite of its relevance in the daily clinical practice, there is a limited number of gastroenterological guidelines dedicated to the diagnosis of anaemia. For this reason, the Italian Association of Hospital Gastroenterologists and E…
Small Bowel Enteroscopy − A Joint Clinical Guideline from the Spanish and Portuguese Small Bowel Study Groups
2020
The present evidence-based guidelines are focused on the use of device-assisted enteroscopy in the management of small-bowel diseases. A panel of experts selected by the Spanish and Portuguese small bowel study groups reviewed the available evidence focusing on the main indications of this technique, its role in the management algorithm of each indication and on its diagnostic and therapeutic yields. A set of recommendations were issued accordingly.Estas recomendações baseadas na evidência detalham o uso da enteroscopia assistida por dispositivo no manejo clínico das doenças do intestino delgado. Um conjunto de Gastrenterologistas diferenciados em patologia do intestino delgado foi selecion…
COPD classification methods and informativeness on mortality: Contrasting evidences
2013
Understanding whether the ABCD GOLD classification method is informative with respect to the spirometric classification of severity in predicting mortality of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is subject of debate. The results of a study performed on a sample of the Norwegian population (HUNT2) were recently published. Such data showed the inferiority of ABCD classification in predicting mortality compared to the spirometric classification, which was considered the gold standard up to the 2011 version of GOLD guidelines. This result is not in line with the results of other studies that have shown the equivalence of the two classifications. The new GOLD classificatio…
