Sealing ability of lateral compaction and tapered single cone gutta-percha techniques in root canals prepared with stainless steel and rotary nickel …
2011
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the sealing ability of lateral compaction and tapered single cone gutta-percha techniques in root canals prepared with stainless steel and rotary nickel titanium root canal instruments by fluid filtration method. Study design: The root canals were prepared with stainless steel (SS) and nickel titanium (NiTi) instruments. The canals prepared with SS were obturated with lateral compaction technique using .02 tapered cones and the canals prepared with NiTi instruments were obturated with lateral compaction technique using .02 tapered cones or 06 tapered single cones. The amount of leakage was evaluated by fluid filtration model. The results wer…
System B, Endo-Twinn and E-Fill. True temperatures inside the canal
2012
Background: The aim of this study is to verify the variations of the temperature inside the root canal with three different gutta-percha heating systems. Materials and Methods: A split-tooth model was built with a lateral groove at 3.5-mm from working length (WL) in order to insert a Chromel-Alumel K-type thermocouple placed in contact with gutta-percha. The thermocouple was connected to a digital thermometer. Sixty obturations were made with medium gutta-percha points. For 20 specimens the System B was used with the Buchanan fine plugger and the temperature was set at 200°C; for other 20 specimens the Endo-Twinn with a fine plugger was used and for the last 20 specimens we used the E-Fill …
Plant-ant interaction in xerophilous ephemeral vegetation of S.E. Sardinia.
2003
Frequency and abundance of annual plants have been measured in 40 square plots, 0.36 m2 each, settled in an area of approximately 5 ha at the foothill of the Sarrabus massif, in S.E. Sardinia. 20 plots were randomly distributed at less than 5 m from the ant nests, further 20 at more than 30 m from the ants nests. The results showed a significantly lower plant density next to the ant nests, together with an higher species richness. Far from the nests, plots resulted dominated by relatively few species with a patchy distribution, while next to the nests the distribution of frequencies resulted more homogeneous. It is suggested that harvesting ants may contribute to the small-scale regulation …
Response of periodontium to mineral trioxide aggregate and Biodentine: a pilot histological study on humans.
2018
Background The aim of this study was to investigate for the first time the histological response of human periodontium to mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine. Methods Six patients scheduled for implant full-arch rehabilitation were randomly assigned to one of the two test groups: MTA or Biodentine treatment. For each patient, two teeth scheduled for strategic extraction were randomly assigned either to the test or to the control treatment. A lateral perforation was drilled on the root and either repaired with MTA/Biodentine or filled with gutta-percha(control). Three months later, the teeth were extracted along with the coronal third of the alveolar bone and a portion of gingiva…
Radicular cyst in a primary molar following pulp therapy with gutta percha : a case report and literature review
2019
A radicular cyst (RC) in deciduous dentition is relatively rare. This clinical report presents a case of RC that condition derived from a primary molar undergone an endodontic treatment with gutta-percha approximately one year ago. In addition, we also considered whether intracanal medicaments and gutta-percha filling material related to the formation and development of the cyst or not. Key words:Primary tooth, radicular cyst, pulp therapy, gutta-percha filling material, intracanal medicament.
Dimensional variability of nonstandardized greater taper finger spreaders with matching gutta-percha points
2001
Aim The purpose of this research was to determine the compatibility and dimensional variability between nonstandardized gutta-percha points and matching finger spreaders. Methodology The diameters of nonstandardized gutta-percha points (n = 15) and matching finger spreaders (n = 15) from different manufacturers (Kerr, Dentsply Maillefer, Vereignigte Dentalwerke and Roeko) were determined and statistically analysed using a profile projector under a magnification of 50 × (±0.002 mm). Results The dimensions of the finger spreaders and gutta-percha cones were inconsistent. Of the 29 groups of nonstandardized gutta-percha cones evaluated, 22 had standard deviations larger than 0.020 at D1. The s…
Tissue reaction to sealing materials: different view at biocompatibility
2010
Abstract The biodegradability of root canal sealers in areas other than the root canal system is crucial to the overall success rate of endodontic treatment. The aim of the present study was to investigate, the cell and tissue reaction to GuttaFlow and AHPlus, both in vitro and in vivo. For the in vitro experiments the materials were incubated with Human Periodontal Ligament Fibroblasts and cell proliferation and cytotoxicity analyses were performed. Additional fluorescence-microscope stainings were carried out in order to visualize cell growth and morphology. For assessment of the tissue reaction to the materials a subcutaneous implantation model in Wistar rats was employed and the inflamm…
Innovations in endodontic filling materials
2012
One of the goals of endodontic treatment is to achieve a complete, tridimensional, hermetic sealing of the root canal system to prevent the entry of microorganisms or their products through both the coronal and apical pathways. Gutta-percha is the most widely used material for root canal filling and despite its numerous properties, such as biocompatibility and thermoplasticity, it has however an important limit: the lack of adhesion to the canal walls. Attempts to address this problem have been made over the years by using endodontic cements capable of bonding to canal dentine but their tendency to resorption in time can compromise the quality of treatment. The first step towards a real adh…

The adaptation of mechanically softened gutta-percha to the canal walls in the presence or absence of smear layer: a scanning electron microscopic st…
1995
Summary The objective of this study was to compare the adaptation of mechanically softened gutta-percha to the root canal wall in the presence and absence of smear layer. The root canals of 20 freshly extracted human maxillary incisors were cleaned and shaped. Prior to obturation, 10 root canals were irrigated with 20 ml of 50% citric acid followed by 20 ml of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite. All canals were obturated with mechanical compaction of gutta-percha and AH-26 sealer. After 72h, each tooth was fractured in half. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the sealer had formed a continuous layer in contact with the canal walls, becoming progressively thinner towards the apex. The sea…
