Carbon and inflation

2021

Abstract This paper investigates whether European Union Allowances (EUAs) can serve as an inflation hedge for two economic areas, four euro countries and two non-euro countries. The Extended Fisher Hypothesis is tested and the evidence shows a strong positive relationship between EUA returns and the unexpected inflation component in all the economic areas or countries analysed, except for the US. Therefore, EUAs are able to provide a hedge against unanticipated inflation rates.

Supplier switching decisions

2007

Abstract In order to maximize profit, a buying firm should continuously search for and access sources which offer more favorable prices. While the literature is replete with works on the formation and development of buyer–supplier relationships, there is surprisingly only scarce research on the termination of such relationships and supplier switching. Using the concept of switching costs in a principal-agent framework, we at first analyze whether a firm switches the entire or a partial quantity to an alternative supplier when there is either symmetric or asymmetric information about the alternative supplier’s cost structure. Information asymmetry results in inert supplier switching decision…

Identity and Access Management for Remote Maintenance Services in Business Networks

2007

Access to information systems across corporate boundaries with high demands to privacy and trust result into ambitious research and development targets. This study provides motivation and a roadmap for approaching integrated security management solutions in a business network of partners with heterogeneous ICT and security infrastructures. We aim at describing specifics of identity and access management in inter-organizational collaboration, and a vision and arguments for identity and access management in a business network. A case study with Metso Paper, Inc., the leading manufacturer of paper machinery and related services, validates the results, thus providing a motivating example of the…

Export of Relational Databases to RDF Databases: A Case Study

2010

The vast amount of business information nowadays is stored in relational databases. For the Semantic Web vision to become a reality, we need ways how to exploit this data in form of RDF triples. The universal and commonly accepted solution for this problem still does not exist. In most cases, mapping languages are used for specification of correspondences between OWL ontology and DB schema. At the same time, these languages generally are not well suited for specification of mappings in cases when there is a substantial difference between OWL ontology and DB schema. In this paper, we describe a new model transformation-based method for specification of correspondences between the elements of…

Internal Test Sets Studies in a Group of Antimalarials

2006

Topological indices have been applied to build QSAR models for a set of 20 an- timalarial cyclic peroxy cetals. In order to evalua te the reliability of the proposed linear models leave-n-out and Internal Test Sets (ITS) approaches have b een considered. The pro- posed procedure resulted in a robust and consensued prediction equation and here it is shown why it is superior to the employed standard c ross-validation algorithms involving multilinear regression models.

Conditions of cultural citizenship: intersections of gender, race and age in public debates on family migration

2015

This article analyses problem framings in public debates on family migration in Finland. The study focuses on the less-examined category of age and how it intersects with gender, race and religion. We examine the discursive context within which parliamentarians and the media negotiate questions of migration policies, belonging and citizenship. Our analysis identifies problem framings by combining frame analysis with the ‘What is the problem represented to be?’ approach, which understands policies as problematizations. We found that the debates held up the rather common notion of vulnerable women and children as groups that tighter family migration policies protect. The debates excluded cert…

The aim of this investigation wa…

Effect of ionization and the nature of the mobile phase in quantitative structure-retention relationship studies.

2005

Abstract The octanol–water distribution constant, commonly called partition coefficient, Po/w, is a parameter often retained as a measure of the hydrophobicity of a molecule. log Po/w, for a given molecule, can be conveniently evaluated constructing correlation lines between standard retention factor logarithms (log k) in reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) and standard log Po/w values. Many compounds of pharmaceutical interest can be quite hydrophobic and have, simultaneously, basic nitrogen atoms or acidic sulfur containing groups in their structure. This renders them ionizable. The hydrophobicity of the molecular drug form (Po/w value) is completely different from its ionic form …

Metaficció irònica a «Estremida memòria», de Jesús Moncada

2006

The reception of Jesús Moncada’s work at the beginning of his literary career was determined by the debate between «rural novel» and «urban novel», up to the point of directing its reading towards an elegiac dimension, at the expense of other distinctive traits of greater importance. In this sense, Moncada’s work has been understood, in an almost exclusive way, as a literary recording of the collective memory. The present article suggests a different reading of «Estremida memòria», in order to discover the essenciality of the irony in the author’s world, in this case, through the characteristic procedures of metafiction: metalepsi and metatextuality. The recreation of Mequinenza’s history i…

Searches for B0 decays to combinations of charmless isoscalar mesons

2004

We search for B meson decays into two-body combinations of eta, eta', omega, and phi mesons from 89 million B B-bar pairs collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at SLAC. We find the branching fraction BF(B0 -> eta omega) = (4.0^{+1.3}_{-1.2} +- 0.4) x 10^-6 with a significance of 4.3 sigma. For all the other decay modes we set the following 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions, in units of 10^-6 : BF(B0 -> eta eta)<2.8, BF(B0 -> eta eta')<4.6, BF(B0 -> eta' eta')<10, BF(B0 -> eta'omega)<2.8, BF(B0 -> eta phi)<1.0, BF(B0 -> eta' phi)<4.5, BF(B0 -> phi phi)<1.5.
