The Importance of Friendship in the Construction of Positive Nations
2013
This chapter is written by two Argentineans, Graciela Tonon and Lia Rodriguez de la Vega, and brings interesting data from their own studies regarding friendship as relational glue for a positive nation. Departing from the results gathered, where friendship emerged as the variable ranked with the highest value for the people interviewed, they define the concept and its typologies and connect it with the idea of a positive nation, with Martin Seligman’s flourishing model, and, finally, with Aristotle’s idea of friendship as community. Alongside the chapter, we can understand, through the testimonies and words of the interviewed, the dynamic perspectives regarding friendship as an instrument …
Positive Communities: Dimensions for Assessment and Intervention
2014
This chapter presents the construction of dimensions to assess people’s satisfaction with life in the community and makes a proposal to identify positive communities for future assessments. In the first place, this chapter provides a definition of the concepts related to a positive community and additionally, identifies the elements which people value in community life. Satisfaction with life in the community implies a personal perception of the degree of satisfaction in relation with different aspects of community life: community equipment, social services (health, education), public policies, public transportation, safety on the streets and in public places, housing, employment opportunit…
Classification of Target Markets and Features of Segmentation in Marketing Places
2008
This paper examines target markets and the strategy of marketing places as an economic instrument directed to the development of countries, regions, cities and towns. The authors give a classification of potential target markets of a territory and their characteristics on an example of Latvia.Markets’ segmentation for realizing the strategy of marketing places is of great value as it allows concentrating activity on the most perspective directions of territory development and on methods of particular group attraction. It gives an opportunity to work with separate categories of consumers, to make marketing policy more direct and more expressive, to promote competitiveness of a territory and …
Serological Evidence for Multiple Strains of Canine Norovirus in the UK Dog Population
2013
International audience; Noroviruses are associated with intestinal disease in humans, cows, pigs, mice, and, more recently, dogs. In 2007, the first canine norovirus (CNV) was identified and characterized in Italy. Subsequent studies have identified CNV in stools of dogs from Portugal, Greece, and the United States. To investigate the prevalence of CNV in the UK dog population, 228 canine stool samples were screened for CNV by qPCR, and 396 serum samples were screened for anti-CNV antibodies. qPCR of RNA extracted from canine stool samples did not reveal any CNV-positive samples, based on samples collected from diarrhoeic and control dogs in 2012-2013. CNV virus-like particles to three diff…
Computational discovery of novel trypanosomicidal drug-like chemicals by using bond-based non-stochastic and stochastic quadratic maps and linear dis…
2009
Herein we present results of a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) studies to classify and design, in a rational way, new antitrypanosomal compounds by using non-stochastic and stochastic bond-based quadratic indices. A data set of 440 organic chemicals, 143 with antitrypanosomal activity and 297 having other clinical uses, is used to develop QSAR models based on linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Non-stochastic model correctly classifies more than 93% and 95% of chemicals in both training and external prediction groups, respectively. On the other hand, the stochastic model shows an accuracy of about the 87% for both series. As an experiment of virtual lead generation, the …
Co-creating Urban Development: A Living Lab for Community Regeneration in the Second District of Palermo
2013
The characterisation of urban ‘smartness’ emerges as a product of social mobilisation, which marks the pathway towards collective technology adoption and policy innovation. This paper highlights the didactic and critical aspects that relate to the use of participatory solutions – namely the electronic Town Meeting and others, such as weblogs and the “Planning for Real” scheme – which start within the dimension of social animation and serious gaming and are only later oriented to urban planning. The Palermo pilot of the PARTERRE ICT-PSP project, based on the Territorial Living Lab approach, documents one possible transition from the stage of a free relationship with scenarios and visions, to…
Anne d’Autriche en ses images : légitimation du pouvoir féminin et culture visuelle de la majesté dans la France du XVIIe siècle
2018
Anne of Austria offers an important part, yet neglected, in the the development of royal iconography in seventeenth century France. Devoided from management of power under the reign of her husband Louis XIII, she is however the subject of many representations. The number of her images increases when she accedes to the responsibilities of the government at the death of the king, in 1643, becoming regent in the name of her minor son, Louis XIV. Beyond its majority in 1651, she maintains herself at a prominent place, until the death of Mazarin in 1661. During these two decades, a deep political crisis in France culminates in the so-called Fronde. In this context, the image of Anne of Austria b…
Structure-dynamics-function relationships in Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) myoglobin. An optical spectroscopy and flash photolysis study on functi…
1993
In this work we report the thermal behavior (10–300 K) of the Soret band lineshape of deoxy and carbonmonoxy derivatives of Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) and horse myoglobins together with their carbon monoxide recombination kinetics after flash photolysis; the results are compared to analogous data relative to sperm whale myoglobin. The Soret band profile is modeled as a Voigt function that accounts for the coupling with high and low frequency vibrational modes, while inhomogeneous broadening is taken into account with suitable distributions of purely electronic transition frequencies. This analysis makes it possible to isolate the various contributions to the overall lineshape that; in…
Reading performance and its developmental trajectories during the first and the second grade
2004
Abstract This study examined children’s reading performance and its developmental trajectories during the first and the second grade. Ninety children were tested five times on word reading and reading comprehension. Qualitatively different groups were identified through cluster analysis: Competent, Technical, and Poor Readers. The results showed that the group membership in the Competent and Technical Reader groups was relatively stable across time but less so for the Poor Reader group. Moreover, seven reading paths were identified of which three were comparatively regressive paths. The results emphasize the importance of taking into account individual variation in reading trajectories duri…
Suppliers and Strategies for Upgrading in Global Production Networks: The Case of a Supplier to the Global Automotive Industry in a High-cost Location
2009
The paper analyses the possibilities for a Norwegian supplier incorporated into global production networks in the automotive industry to perform knowledge upgrading and innovation activity. A consistent finding is that different departments of the supplier are parts of different types of global network. The serial production of the supplier is distinguished by quasi-hierarchical governance by customers and by lean forms of work organization in the production that stimulate continuous, incremental upgrading of the production process. The development department has network relations with customers and learning forms of work organization, which triggers production and functional upgrading. The…
