Is lack of habituation a biomarker of migraine? A critical perspective

Processing of sensory stimuli has been supposed to be dysfunctioning in migraine. A basis for such abnormality has been identified in a defective ability to habituate to repetitive sensorial stimulation. Habituation, i.e. the way the nervous system attenuates response to repeated non noxious stimuli is a fundamental function of sensory systems, that allows appropriate adaptation of neural responses to the relevance of incoming stimuli. In humans, habituation can be studied by evoked potentials where it is indexed by a reduction of amplitude of the evoked response to repeated stimulation. Epidemiological profile of patients infected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

Introduction. The aim of the present work is to identify the principal characteristics of a sample of individuals at the moment of diagnosis of HIV infection. Material and methods. Descriptive, retrospective study, based on the hospital clinical records of 70 HIV+ patients, without AIDS, selected by means of simple aleatory sampling. Results. Transmission categories: Users of Injectable Drugs (UID) 81.4%, heterosexuals 10%, homo/bisexuals 4.3% and transfusions/plasma donors 2.9%, sex: ratio man/woman = 3.8/1, average age on diagnosis: 27.3 ± 7.0 years (UID 26.3 ± 5.1 years, heterosexuals 29.6 ± 2.1 years, homo/bisexuals 27.3 ± 3.9 and transfusions/plasma donors 51.4 ± 23.1 years (p = 0.02).…

The effects of electrodermal lability and stimulus intensity on skin conductance habituation: A preliminary report

A between-subjects design (N=60) was used to investigate the effects of electrodermal lability and auditory stimulus intensity on habituation of the skin conductance response (SCR). Subjects were subdivided into “labile” and “stabile” groups on the basis of frequency of nonspecific electrodermal responses during the prestimulation period. They received 20 presentations of a 1,000-Hz tone of 15, 35, 55, 75, 95, or 110 dB. Event‐related brain potentials to change in rapidly presented acoustic stimuli in newborns

Event-related brain potentials of 28 newborns to pitch change were studied during quiet sleep under stimulus conditions that typically elicit mismatch negativity in adults. Rarely occurring deviant tones of 1100 Hz (probability 12%) were embedded among repeated standard tones of 1000 Hz in an oddball-sequence with an interstimulus interval of 425 ms. Two control conditions were also employed: In the first, the 1100-Hz stimulus was presented alone without the intervening standard stimuli, and in the second the deviant stimulus had a pitch of 1300 Hz. Background The literature does not report any association between habitual snoring and sleep bruxism, but these situations can be a reason for frequent complaints of individuals, impairing the quality of life. This study was performed to investigate the sleep period and amount of habitual snoring in individuals with sleep bruxism observing expiratory, inspiratory, and mixed snoring. All development stages of Chiropturopoda nidiphila Wiśniewski & Hirschmann, 1983 are described, which has previously been known only from the deutonymph stage. The species is closely associated with tree holes excavated by woodpeckers. Chiropturopoda nidiphila was redescribed and the genus diagnosis was completed. The description of the species morphology is based largely on scanning (SEM) electronograms. Diagnoses differentiating all of the known species of the genus Chiropturopoda are provided, including their developmental stages.

Modern excavations of settlement sites from the end of the First Iron Age and the beginning of the second, together with a re-examination of those undertaken in the past, permit us to better approach some material that has traditionally been neglected as a result of its unpromising aspect: notably some of the iron material. This article will attempt to show the diversity of this material, and some new methods permitting its quantification. The aim is to deepen our understanding of the role and status of this metal in Hallstatt society by a consideration of the material from occupation sites as opposed to funerary monuments.
