Abstract Background The development and maintenance of anxiety disorders is not fully understood. There is consensus in the literature that in addition to genetic factors, social, psychological and neurobiological factors are of crucial importance. Effect of serotonin uptake inhibition by zimelidine on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal activity

Plasma ACTH levels after oral ingestion of 2 g metyrapone at 24.00 hours in six healthy subjects were higher after pretreatment with zimelidine (300 mg) in comparison to placebo. Since zimelidine is a relatively selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor its action on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) activity suggests that serotonin is a potent stimulator of ACTH release. The ratio of cortisol to 11-deoxycortisol was taken as a measure of 11-hydroxylase activity, which indicates biological activity of secreted ACTH. Hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis in acromegaly

To evaluate the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis in acromegaly, total and free thyroid hormones and TSH response to TRH were determined in 36 acromegalic patients. In 10 patients, rT3 and thyroxine binding globulin (TBG) were also assayed by radioimmunoassay. In 15 patients the TSH response to TRH was also studied after medical or surgical therapy of the acromegaly. In 34 patients total thyroid hormones were in the normal range whereas two patients had low serum levels of free thyroid hormones. Thirty-two of the acromegalic patients were euthyroid. Intimate partner violence is associated with increased maternal hair cortisol in mother–child dyads

Abstract Background The chronic consequences of intimate partner violence (IPV) on HPA activation are a topic of debate. The current study investigated hair cortisol concentrations in female victims of IPV and their children. Methods A total of 52 mother–child dyads were divided into two groups depending on exposure to IPV: IPV group (n = 27 dyads) and control group (n = 25 dyads). Weekly monitoring of dexamethasone suppression response in depression: its relationship to change of body weight and psychopathology

Abstract Weekly dexamethasone suppression tests (DST) were performed in 19 hospitalized patients with major depressive disorder, endogenous subtype, and who had an abnormal DST at admission. Depression scores (Hamilton Rating Scale) and weight changes were collected by investigators who were blind to the test results. Adrenal morphology and function in acromegalic patients in relation to disease activity.

Visceromegaly is a common consequence of acromegaly. However, few studies investigated the chronic effects of growth hormone on adrenal glands. Our aim was to evaluate adrenal morphology and function in a cohort of acromegalic patients in relation to disease activity. Twenty-six acromegalics (10 males and 16 females) and 21 healthy subjects were investigated. Gland morphology was evaluated by computerized axial tomography, measuring central, lateral, and medial adrenal segments. However it is unclear how these systems are affected in pathological gambling. External and internal exposure of wine growers spraying methyl parathion.

Organophosphates, used in agriculture, are readily absorbed through the skin. We investigated the relationship between dermal and inhalative methyl parathion exposure and the plasma levels. Twenty-three healthy wine growers sprayed the insecticide for 50 min. Fluorescent brilliant sulfoflavin was added to the spraying fluids and filter papers were fixed on the subjects. The filter papers were used to evaluate the amount of brilliant sulfoflavine on the unprotected skin fluorometrically. Inhalative exposure was measured with personal air sampler.
