The discovery of mitochondrial type N1a in Central European Neolithic skeletons at a high frequency enabled us to answer the question of whether the modern population is maternally descended from the early farmers instead of addressing the traditional question of the origin of early European farmers.

Emotion recognition changes in a confinement situation due to COVID-19

Abstract The confinement situation experienced as a result of COVID-19 will have consequences at a psychological level. These consequences can affect emotion recognition because, due to isolation, interactions and social contacts have been drastically reduced. The aim of this study was to find out if there were differences in facial emotion recognition in two groups of young adults, one confined during COVID-19 and the other unconfined. Multiobjective muffler shape optimization with hybrid acoustics modelling

Shape optimization of a duct system with respect to sound transmission loss is considered. The objective of optimization is to maximize the sound transmission loss at multiple frequency ranges simultaneously by adjusting the shape of a reactive muffler component. The noise reduction problem is formulated as a multiobjective optimization problem. The sound attenuation for each considered frequency is determined by a hybrid method, which requires solving Helmholtz equation numerically by finite element method. Multiobjective muffler shape optimization with hybrid acoustics modelling

This paper considers the combined use of a hybrid numerical method for the modeling of acoustic mufflers and a genetic algorithm for multiobjective optimization. The hybrid numerical method provides accurate modeling of sound propagation in uniform waveguides with non-uniform obstructions. It is based on coupling a wave based modal solution in the uniform sections of the waveguide to a finite element solution in the non-uniform component. Event-shape engineering for inclusive spectra and elliptic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV

We report on results obtained with the event-shape engineering technique applied to Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV. By selecting events in the same centrality interval, but with very different average flow, different initial-state conditions can be studied. We find the effect of the event-shape selection on the elliptic flow coefficient v2 to be almost independent of transverse momentum pT, which is as expected if this effect is attributable to fluctuations in the initial geometry of the system. Charged-hadron, -pion, -kaon, and -proton transverse momentum distributions are found to be harder in events with higher-than-average elliptic flow, indicating an interplay between radial and e…

Higher plants possess two different types of ATX1-like copper chaperones.

Abstract Copper (Cu) chaperones constitute a family of small Cu+-binding proteins required for Cu homeostasis in eukaryotes. The ATX1 family of Cu chaperones specifically delivers Cu to heavy metal P-type ATPases. The plant Arabidopsis thaliana expresses the ATX1-like Cu chaperone CCH, which exhibits a plant-specific carboxy-terminal domain (CTD) with unique structural properties. We show that CCH homologues from other higher plants contain CTDs with structural properties similar to Arabidopsis CCH. Functional and conformational properties of the exclusive C-domain from the Arabidopsis copper chaperone (CCH)

The Arabidopsis thaliana copper chaperone (CCH) is a small copper binding protein involved in copper trafficking. When compared to homologues from other eukaryotes, CCH has two different domains; the conserved N-domain and the plant-exclusive C-domain, a C-terminal extension with an unusual amino-acid composition. In order to characterize this extra C-domain, the CCH protein, the N-domain and the C-domain were all expressed separately in heterologous systems.
