Energy planning methodology of net-zero energy solar neighborhoods in the Mediterranean basin

2016

The article proposes a simplified methodology to optimize solar energy gains at district level in the Mediterranean area toward the achievement of the net-zero energy district target, to be applicable as well in similar hot climates. The approach includes a wide use of parametric analysis to explore the most impactful aspects of the design of solar net-zero energy districts: single unit shape, building mutual distances, road shape, building orientation, photovoltaics area availability to identify the optimal design solution. Thirty-two different district configurations are explored: results show that in the Mediterranean context, it is possible to reach the net-zero energy district target i…

An empirical test of neighbourhood effect and safe-site effect in abandoned Mediterranean vineyards

2011

The importance of both neighbourhood effect and safe-site effect for the colonization of Mediterranean old fields by woody plants was investigated. Using a transect approach, we recorded colonization of 21 species of woody plants on abandoned, terraced vineyards on Pantelleria Island (Sicily) in dependence from neighbouring terraces in older succession stages (Maquis) and available safe sites for seedling establishment (former crop plant, terrace wall). With a paired design of four treatments, including presence/absence of adjacent older successional stages, and North-/South-facing slopes, a neighbourhood effect could be shown for both expositions if the transect started from an adjacent fi…

Computational Analysis Workshop: Comparing Four Approaches to Melodic Analysis

2009

We compare four computational approaches of melodic analysis according to diverse approach aspects: input type (monophonic or polyphonic), pattern identification type (strict or similar), analysis segmentation, aim of approach, motivic pattern representation, and type of result representations. The considered four computational approaches are the following: a similarity neighbourhood approach by Adiloglu (Adiloglu and Obermayer 2006a, b), a multiple viewpoint representation and discovery approach by Anagnostopoulou (Anagnostopoulou, Share and Conklin 2006), a topological approach by Buteau (2005), and an approach based on multidimensional closed pattern mining by Lartillot (Lartillot and To…

Fixed point results for $r$-$(\mathbf{\eta},\xi,\psi)$-contractive mappings of type (I), (II) and (III)

2013

In this paper, we introduce some classes of $r$-$(\eta,\xi,\psi)$-contractive mappings and prove results of fixed point in the setting of complete metric spaces. Some examples and an application to integral equations are given to illustrate the usability of the obtained results.

Hepatocytes of double-transgenic mice expressing high levels of hepatitis B virus e antigen and interferon-gamma are not injured by HBeAg specific au…

2000

Seroconversion from HBeAg to alphaHBe of persons chronically infected by HBV is usually associated with a transient exacerbation of liver disease and subsequent normalization of liver histology. It is speculated that these clinico-pathological features may be due to the activation of cytodestructive mechanisms by alphaHBe antibodies. The aim of the present study was to investigate the pathogenic potential of alphaHBe antibodies in a transgenic mouse model. Therefore, alphaHBe autoantibodies were elicited in double-transgenic mice expressing high amounts of HBeAg and interferon-gamma in the liver. Interferon-gamma has reviously been shown to play an important role in the development of hepat…

Recent acquired STD and the use of HAART in the Italian Cohort of Naive for Antiretrovirals (I.Co.N.A): analysis of the incidence of newly acquired h…

2008

Objective: To estimate the incidence of newly acquired syphilis (n-syphilis) and hepatitis B infection (n-hepatitis B) in I.Co.N.A. and to evaluate the impact of HAART, calendar date and risk group. Methods: Cohort study: Incidence was calculated by person-years analyses. Poisson regression was used for the multivariate model. Results: The rate of n-syphilis was 23.4/1,000 PYFU and it increased over time; HIV transmission risk was the most important predictor: men who have sex with men (MSM) had a considerable higher risk (RR 5.92, 95% CI 2.95-12.13 vs IDU/exIDU, p < 0.0001). The rate of n-hepatitis B was 12.2/1,000 PYFU; it declined in recent years and halved per 10 years age. Patients wit…

Phylogenetic Analysis of isolates from new cases of HBV infection in Southern Italy.

2012

The level of endemicity of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections in Italy is low and genotype D infections predominant. New HBV strains may however be introduced as a result of movements of people from regions of high endemicity. The aim of the present study was to determine whether strains from new cases of acute hepatitis B detected in southern Italy were due to endemic or new HBV strains. We studied 34 isolates from patients with acute hepatitis B infection, and 35 from chronic hepatitis B patients. A phylogenetic analysis of preS/S region was done by comparing the sequences from the acute and chronic cases with references sequences. The study showed that 44% of strain from acute hepatitis …

Detection of hepatitis B virus DNA by polymerase chain reaction in serum and liver of children with chronic hepatitis B negative for hepatitis B viru…

1992

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA was detected by polymerase chain reaction in the serum of 87 and liver tissue of 40 children with chronic hepatitis B, negative for HBV DNA by dot blot and Southern blot hybridization, respectively. In sera HBV DNA could be detected in 73 hepatitis B surface antigen carriers; 14 were hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg), 56 were anti-HBe-seropositive and 3 had neither HBeAg nor positive anti-HBe. In 14 anti-HBe-positive patients no HBV DNA could be found. Viral sequences in liver tissue were present in 33 specimens; 20 were HBeAg and 13 were anti-HBe-seropositive. All of the 7 negative children had anti-HBe. Our results confirm polymerase chain reaction to be a more sen…

Antibodies to hepatitis B virus x-protein in sera of patients with acute and chronic acitve hepatitis

1989

Sera of patients with acute (AH) and chronic active hepatitis (CAH) were tested for anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) x-protein (HBx) by immunoblotting, using recombinant MS2- and beta gal-HBx fusion proteins as substrate. Antibodies against HBx were detected in 5 out of 17 patients with AH at an early stage of infection, and in 13 out of 35 patients with CAH. Positive sera from AH patients showed a relatively weak anti-HBx reactivity when compared to sera from CAH patients. In follow up studies we tested serial serum samples from patients positive for anti-HBx. Patients with AH were observed for 3 to 6 weeks and CAH patients for up to 51 months. In general anti-HBx reactivities appeared to be s…
