LO SPECCHIO DEI SASSONI DI DRESDA: Diritto Territoriale III. Introduzione, TRADUZIONE, Glossario.

2011

Gramsci e la recensione a New Schools in the Old World

2019

Community Development and Social Participation

2011

The paper presents the reslt of the action research project issued in Palermo (Southern Italy), in disadvantaged urban suburbs, methodologically based on Kurt Lewin's field theory - that is a three-step spiral process of planning which involves recoinnaissance; talking actions; and fact-finding about the results of the action - in order to develop the social participation and the social change. The principal aim of the project was the empowerment of participants, obtaining their collaboration through participation, giving them acquisition of knowledge for a real social change.

Impegnat…

Distribution of KIR Genes and Their HLA Ligands in Different Viral Infectious Diseases: Frequency Study in Sicilian Population

2022

Natural killer (NK) cells play a role in defence against viral infections by killing infected cells or by producing cytokines and interacting with adaptive immune cells. Killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) regulate the activation of NK cells through their interaction with human leucocyte antigens (HLA). Ninety-six Sicilian patients positive to Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 (HIV) and ninety-two Sicilian patients positive to SARS-CoV-2 were genotyped for KIRs and their HLA ligands. We also included fifty-six Sicilian patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) already recruited in our previous study. The aim of this study was to compare the distribution of KIR–HLA genes/groups of these t…

A NOVEL APOB MUTATION IDENTIFIED BY EXOME SEQUENCING COSEGREGATES WITH STEATOSIS, LIVER CANCER AND HYPOCHOLESTEROLEMIA

2013

Objective. In familial hypobetalipoproteinemia (FHBL), fatty liver is a characteristic feature, and there are several reports of associated cirrhosis and hepatocarcinoma. We investigated a large kindred in which low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, fatty liver and hepatocarcinoma displayed an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. Approach and Results. The proband was a 25 year-old female with low plasma cholesterol and hepatic steatosis. Low plasma levels of total cholesterol and fatty liver were observed in 10 more family members; 1 member was affected by liver cirrhosis and four more subjects died of either hepatocarcinoma or carcinoma on cirrhosis. To identify the causal mutat…

FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERIZATION OF NOVEL AMINO ACID VARIANTS IN APOB IN FAMILIAL HYPOBETALIPOPROTEINEMIA

2013

Introduction. Familial Hypobetalipoproteinemia (FHBL) is a codominant disorder characterized by reduced levels of LDL and apolipoprotein B (apoB) in plasma. In approximately 50% of FHBL cases is due to mutations in APOB gene resulting in truncated apoBs of various size. Only a few missense mutations have been reported so far as the cause of FHBL. In vitro studies have shown that these mutations induce retention of the mutant apoB in the endoplasmic reticulum and impair the secretion of apoB-containing lipoproteins. We identi ed two novel amino acid variants (Thr26-27del and Tyr102Cys) located in the N-terminal 1000 amino acids of mature apoB in two hypocholesterolemic blood donors. Methods.…

HEPATIC STEATOSIS IS ASSOCIATED WITH SEVERE FIBROSIS IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC HEPATITIS B

2010

Background and aim: Steatosis and insulin resistance (IR) are the major disease modifying in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). Only few studies evaluated these features in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). We aimed to assess the prevalence and the characteristics of steatosis and IR in CHB patients, compared to CHC subjects, and to evaluate the potential association between these features and fibrosis severity. Material and methods: 170 consecutive patients with CHB (28 HBeAg positive, 128 HBeAg negative, and 14 HBeAg negative/anti-HDV positive), and 170 sex, age and BMI matched genotype 1 CHC patients were evaluated by liver biopsy and metabolic measurements, including IR, by…
