Les commissions de quartier à l’heure de l’engagement écocitoyen, à Dijon : entre communication stratégique publique locale et construction d’un espa…

2018

This doctoral thesis in Information and Communication Science explores the question of eco-citizen commitment in the neighborhood commissions of Dijon. Many academic or more popular publications in different fields of research (Information and Communication Science, social and environmental psychology, political science, law, philosophy, ecology, etc.) have addressed this issue in recent years. Once the actors of the question had been defined (the inhabitants, elected officials, technicians, representatives of structures and associations, etc.), it was possible to study different instances of participatory democracy in Dijon. The following question ensued : "How are the neighborhood commiss…

Parallelized Clustering of Protein Structures on CUDA-Enabled GPUs

2014

Estimation of the pose in which two given molecules might bind together to form a potential complex is a crucial task in structural biology. To solve this so-called "docking problem", most algorithms initially generate large numbers of candidate poses (or decoys) which are then clustered to allow for subsequent computationally expensive evaluations of reasonable representatives. Since the number of such candidates ranges from thousands to millions, performing the clustering on standard CPUs is highly time consuming. In this paper we analyze and evaluate different approaches to parallelize the nearest neighbor chain algorithm to perform hierarchical Ward clustering of protein structures usin…

Neighborhood characteristics and violence behind closed doors: The spatial overlap of child maltreatment and intimate partner violence

2018

In this study, we analyze first whether there is a common spatial distribution of child maltreatment (CM) and intimate partner violence (IPV), and second, whether the risks of CM and IPV are influenced by the same neighborhood characteristics, and if these risks spatially overlap. To this end we used geocoded data of CM referrals (N = 588) and IPV incidents (N = 1450) in the city of Valencia (Spain). As neighborhood proxies, we used 552 census block groups. Neighborhood characteristics analyzed at the aggregated level (census block groups) were: Neighborhood concentrated disadvantage (neighborhood economic status, neighborhood education level, and policing activity), immigrant concentration…

Premature aging in bone of fish from a highly polluted marine area

2015

Fish species have attracted considerable interest in studies assessing biological responses to environmental contaminants. In this study, the attention has been focussed on fishbone of selected fish species from a highly polluted marine area, Augusta Bay (Italy, Central Mediterranean) to evaluate if toxicant elements had an effect on the mineralogical structure of bones, although macroscopic deformations were not evident. In particular, an attempt was made to evaluate if bone mineral features, such as crystallinity, mineral maturity and carbonate/phosphate mineral content, determined by XR-Diffraction and FT-IR Spectroscopy, suffered negative effects due to trace element levels in fishbone,…

Neighbor-Distinguishing k-tuple Edge-Colorings of Graphs

2009

AbstractThis paper studies proper k-tuple edge-colorings of graphs that distinguish neighboring vertices by their sets of colors. Minimum numbers of colors for such colorings are determined for cycles, complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs. A variation in which the color sets assigned to edges have to form cyclic intervals is also studied and similar results are given.

Rethinking Civil Society in Development: Scales and Situated Hegemonies

2016

Ethnic residential segregation is often explained with the claim that ‘immigrants don’t want to integrate—they prefer to stick together with co-ethnics’. By contrast, mixed neighbourhoods are seen as crucial for achieving social cohesion. In line with spatial assimilation theory there is a normative assumption that people interact with those living nearby. From interviews on neighbourhood qualities and locations valued by Oslo residents of Turkish, Somali and Polish backgrounds, we raise questions about the validity of two assumptions: that most immigrants want to live in the same neighbourhoods as co-ethnics; and that they want to live close to co-ethnics because they do not want to integr…

Towards a New European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP): What Benefits of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreements (DCFTAs) for Shared Prosperity a…

2016

This article examines the problem of the ENP countries’ integration with the EU market from two perspectives: the macroeconomic situation as an integral component of the overall transformation process and the integration with the EU markets, and the political economy of the regional integration perspectives of these countries. This methodological approach serves as a tool for integrating a number of main goals related to the EU’s soft power that require the development and support of civil society in the neighbouring states. This contribution aims to offer insight in the implementation of the regional arrangements, taking into consideration new political and economic realities in the Eurasi…

Pattern classification using a new border identification paradigm: The nearest border technique

2015

Abstract There are many paradigms for pattern classification such as the optimal Bayesian, kernel-based methods, inter-class border identification schemes, nearest neighbor methods, nearest centroid methods, among others. As opposed to these, this paper pioneers a new paradigm, which we shall refer to as the nearest border (NB) paradigm. The philosophy for developing such a NB strategy is as follows: given the training data set for each class, we shall attempt to create borders for each individual class. However, unlike the traditional border identification (BI) methods, we do not undertake this by using inter-class criteria; rather, we attempt to obtain the border for a specific class in t…
