Morphological similarities between DBM and a microeconomic model of sprawl
2010
JEL classification : C61; C63; D62; R21; R40; International audience; We present a model that simulates the growth of a metropolitan area on a 2D lattice. The model is dynamic and based on microeconomics. Households show preferences for nearby open spaces and neighbourhood density. They compete on the land market. They travel along a road network to access the CBD. A planner ensures the connectedness and maintenance of the road network. The spatial pattern of houses, green spaces and road network self-organises, emerging from agents individualistic decisions. We perform several simulations and vary residential preferences. Our results show morphologies and transition phases that are similar…
Synthetic environmental appraisal of waste management system: an application to the Sicilian region
2004
This paper addresses the problem of synthetically evaluating the environmental performances of urban solid waste systems. This, in fact, represents a crucial point in the management process of complex systems that local administrations are called to cope with, in order to provide decisions about policy options that involve different issues characterising the quality of life of people. Suitable methods of evaluation are clearly required for this aim. This work introduces the dashboard of sustainability and the ecological footprint approaches as aggregate indicators of the performances of solid waste management systems. The methods have been selected due to their intrinsic simplicities, provi…
Facial geometry and speech analysis for depression detection.
2017
Depression is one of the most prevalent mental disorders, burdening many people world-wide. A system with the potential of serving as a decision support system is proposed, based on novel features extracted from facial expression geometry and speech, by interpreting non-verbal manifestations of depression. The proposed system has been tested both in gender independent and gender based modes, and with different fusion methods. The algorithms were evaluated for several combinations of parameters and classification schemes, on the dataset provided by the Audio/Visual Emotion Challenge of 2013 and 2014. The proposed framework achieved a precision of 94.8% for detecting persons achieving high sc…
Feature extraction for classification in knowledge discovery systems
2003
Dimensionality reduction is a very important step in the data mining process. In this paper, we consider feature extraction for classification tasks as a technique to overcome problems occurring because of "the curse of dimensionality". We consider three different eigenvector-based feature extraction approaches for classification. The summary of obtained results concerning the accuracy of classification schemes is presented and the issue of search for the most appropriate feature extraction method for a given data set is considered. A decision support system to aid in the integration of the feature extraction and classification processes is proposed. The goals and requirements set for the d…
FORMA URBANA TRA DISCONTINUITA' E DISTANZA
2021
With the belief that only by adhering to a wide and general theory on the composition of its structure, it is possible to proceed to the manipulation of even the most minute of its parts, the essay tends to develop a thought on the idea of the shape of the urban organism aimed at composing a settlement grammar to define a suitable syntax that is then projected to assign an identity to the peri-urban areas. Drawing on references that have already expressed a stance on the matter, to be found throughout the text is the endorsement of an idea of densification linked to the expansion and completion of existing manufactured fragments to yield clusters on the remains of what is left of the origin…
Fiducia verso persone e istituzioni: evidenze da una survey sul capitale civico degli studenti
2017
Trust in people and institutions: evidence from a survey on the civic capital of students Objectives: According to economic theory, civic capital is the result of a process of social investment through vertical transmission channels, internal to the family, and horizontal socialization, among peers. The reference context, such as the neighbourhood, plays an important role influencing both of these channels. This paper presents some initial evidence obtained from a statistical survey conducted on students of secondary high schools of the city of Palermo with the aim of measuring the basic dimensions that contribute to the formation of the civic and human capital. In particular, the focus is …
A note on rank 2 diagonals
2020
<p>We solve two questions regarding spaces with a (Gδ)-diagonal of rank 2. One is a question of Basile, Bella and Ridderbos about weakly Lindelöf spaces with a Gδ-diagonal of rank 2 and the other is a question of Arhangel’skii and Bella asking whether every space with a diagonal of rank 2 and cellularity continuum has cardinality at most continuum.</p>
Anti-concentration property for random digraphs and invertibility of their adjacency matrices
2016
Let Dn,dDn,d be the set of all directed d-regular graphs on n vertices. Let G be a graph chosen uniformly at random from Dn,dDn,d and M be its adjacency matrix. We show that M is invertible with probability at least View the MathML source1−Cln3d/d for C≤d≤cn/ln2nC≤d≤cn/ln2n, where c,Cc,C are positive absolute constants. To this end, we establish a few properties of directed d-regular graphs. One of them, a Littlewood–Offord-type anti-concentration property, is of independent interest: let J be a subset of vertices of G with |J|≤cn/d|J|≤cn/d. Let δiδi be the indicator of the event that the vertex i is connected to J and δ=(δ1,δ2,…,δn)∈{0,1}nδ=(δ1,δ2,…,δn)∈{0,1}n. Then δ is not concentrate…
Partially Square Graphs, Hamiltonicity and Circumference II
2000
Abstract Given a graph G, its partially square graph G∗ is a graph obtained by adding an edge uv for each pair u, v of vertices of G at distance 2 whenever the vertices u and v have a common neighbor x satisfying the condition NG(x) ⊆ NG[u] ∪ NG[v], where NG[x]= NG(x) ∪ {x}. In case G is a claw-free graph, G∗ is equal to G2, We define σ ∗ t = min{ ∑ x∈ d ∗ G (x): S is an independent set in G ∗ and ∣S∣ = t} , where d ∗ G (x) = ∣{y ∈ V∣ xy ∈ E(G∗)}∣ . We give for hamiltonicity and circumference new sufficient conditions depending on and we improve some known results.
