Gill area explains deviations from body size–metabolic rate relationship in teleost fishes

2022

Whether gill area constrains fish metabolism through oxygen limitation is a debated topic. Here, the authors provide insights into this question by analysing mass-specific metabolic rates across 44 teleost fishes extracted from FishBase. They explore whether species deviations from metabolic rates predicted by body mass can be explained by species gill area. They show that the gill area explains c. 26%–28% of species-level deviations from mass-specific metabolic rates. Their findings suggest that gill area might indeed be one of the factors limiting metabolic rate in fishes.

Prenatal thyroid hormones accelerate postnatal growth and telomere shortening in wild great tits

2021

AbstractEarly-life environment is known to affect later-life health and disease, which could be mediated by the early-life programming of telomere length, a key hallmark of ageing. According to thefetal programming of telomere biology hypothesis, variation in prenatal exposure to hormones is likely to influence telomere length. Yet the contribution of key metabolic hormones,i.e. thyroid hormones (THs), has been largely ignored. We recently showed that in contrast to predictions, exposure to elevated prenatal THs increased postnatal telomere length in wild collared flycatchers, but the generality of such effect, its underlying proximate mechanisms and consequences on survival have not been i…

Teacher– and parent–child relationships and children’s adjustment behaviors in grade 1 : The role of temperament.

2022

This study aimed at investigating the reciprocal longitudinal associations between teacher– and parent–child relationships and children’s adjustment behaviors during Grade 1, and the role of the child’s temperament in this interplay. The longitudinal study followed Lithuanian children (229 in kindergarten [T0], 337 at the beginning of Grade 1 [T1], 341 at the end of Grade 1 [T2]), their parents, and their Grade 1 teachers (n = 24). The parents and teachers reported on the quality of their relationship with the children during Grade 1. In addition, parents reported on the children’s temperament in kindergarten, and the teachers reported on the children’s adjustment behaviors during Grade 1. …

Haastava oppilas hyötyy rajoista

2017

Tämä artikkeli pohjautuu Viljarannan, Aunolan, Mullolan, Virkkalan, Hirvosen, Pakarisen ja Nurmen artikkeliin The role of temperament on children’s skill development: Teachers’ Interaction Styles as Mediators, joka julkaistiin Child Development -lehden numerossa 86(4) vuonna 2015.

ADHD Symptoms and peer problems: Mediation of executive function and theory of mind

2017

Background: The social maladjustment suffered by many children with attention defi cit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is maintained over time, increasing the risk of subsequent adverse outcomes. The objectives of the study were to explore the mechanisms that operate between ADHD symptoms and social problems with peers, considering the mediation of FE and ToM. Method: 35 children with ADHD and 37 with typical development matched in age and IQ were compared. Parents assessed ToM skills and relationships with peers, and teachers provided EF ratings. Results: The analyses showed statistically signifi cant indirect mediation effects of EF in the relationship between ADHD symptoms and problems in …
