The Finnish Government recently launched policies to meet labor shortage challenges, recruit highly skilled international workers. However, they overlook a skilled population already living in Finland, namely highly educated migrants. The problem is that migrants tend to be treated similarly, whether they are well-educated or not. This means that migrants are typically directed into low paying jobs. How is it possible to better develop this group with more effective career guidance? We believe an important answer lies in improved university education for migrants. The Finnish classroom assessment culture is considered that of assessment for learning. The situation in upper-secondary schools is different, however. While teachers in Finland appreciate assessment supporting learning, they feel unable to merge it with assessment of learning outcomes, and favour the latter due to the Matriculation Examination (ME; e.g. Leontjev, submitted), a high-stakes exam growingly used in university admission. Tämän tutkimuksen päätavoitteena on kartoittaa suomi toisena kielenä -oppijoiden sananmuodostustaitoja, sillä aihealue on toistaiseksi ollut lähestulkoon tutkimaton. Sananmuodostus on yksi suomen kielen ominaispiirteistä, joten se on tärkeä kielen osa-alue suomenoppijoiden kannalta. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin, miten paljon ja millaisia sananmuodostuskeinoja S2-oppijat hyödyntävät kirjoitelmissaan ja miten niiden käyttäminen on kehittynyt kahdessa vuodessa. Erillisten johtamistehtävien avulla tutkittiin kontrolloidummin, miten oppijat osaavat muodostaa johdoksia ja miten hyvin he tuntevat johdinten merkitystehtäviä. Dialogical view on learner agency of immigrant pupils : a case study of the learners of Finnish as L2

This study explores the dialogical nature of agency when two immigrant pupils, who are learning Finnish as their new target language, are authoring their selves. Bakhtin’s dialogism was the inspiration for this examination of the discourses that surround the L2 pupils’ agency and how they respond to discourses through their agency. Ethnographically oriented data collection included classroom observations, the pupils’ portfolios, and interviews with the pupils (as main participants) and meaningful adults. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan hengellisyyden merkitystä päihdeongelmasta toipumiselle. Tutkimuksen keskeisiä käsitteitä ovat päihdeongelma, päihdeongelmasta toipuminen sekä hengellisyys. Tutkimuksen teoreettisessa viitekehyksessä avataan näitä käsitteitä sekä pohditaan aiemman tutkimuksen valossa päihdeongelmasta toipumisen ja hengellisyyden yhteyttä. Keskeisiä suomalaisia tutkijoita, joiden tutkimuksia tämän tutkimuksen tekemisessä on hyödynnetty, ovat Jorma Niemelä ja Katja Kuusisto. A handy and accessible tool for identification of Sn(II) in toothpaste.

AbstractAn easily accessible colorimetric probe, a carbazole–naphthaldehyde conjugate (CNP), was successfully prepared for the selective and sensitive recognition of Sn(II) in different commercially-available toothpaste and mouth wash samples. The binding mechanism of CNP for Sn2+ was confirmed by UV–Vis, 1H, and 13C NMR titrations. The proposed sensing mechanism was supported by quantum chemical calculations. Selective detection of Sn(II) in the nanomolar range (85 nM), among other interfering metal ions, makes it exclusive.
