Voimaharjoitusta edeltävän hera-kaseinaattiyhdistelmän akuutti vaikutus seerumin hormoneihin ja energia-aineenvaihduntaan
2004
Hulmi, Juha 2004. Voimaharjoitusta edeltävän hera-kaseinaattiyhdistelmän vaikutus seerumin hormoneihin ja energia-aineenvaihduntaan. Liikuntafysiologian Pro gradu -tutkielma. Jyväskylän yliopisto. Liikuntabiologian laitos. 150 s.
Developing response-ability in human-wasp encounters
2023
Learning to live with unloved others is crucial in the ecological crisis. Unloved wasps are feared and disliked for their sting. Understanding of their ecological importance is increasing, however. Human-wasp encounters are changing with environmental changes, and strategies for multispecies cohabitation are needed. This multispecies study highlights features of wasp biology affecting human-wasp encounters and analyzes how conflicted human-wasp relations could be mitigated. The geographical focus is Finland, in the Northern boreal region. Biological analysis specified spatiotemporal aspects affecting human-wasp encounters: human and wasp habitats and preferences overlap ubiquitously. From a…
Japanilaisen Wandervogel-klubin jäsenten käsitykset vaeltamisesta ja vuorista
2012
Instigated by the author’s four-and-a-half month long membership in the Wandervogel hiking club of Kanazawa University, Japan, this study focuses on the experience of hiking in the mountains from a phenomenological perspective. This period of preliminary fieldwork is drawn upon as a source of inspiration and firsthand experience rather than as research material itself, the bulk of which consists of twelve answers given by members of Wandervogel in an unstructured Google Docs questionnaire. Both during and after the lengthy process of translating these answers from Japanese into Finnish, the method of close reading was applied in order to not only uncover their apparent content but to point …
Empathy, Entrainment, and Perceived Interaction in Complex Dyadic Dance Movement
2019
The current study explores how individuals' tendency to empathize with others (trait empathy) modulates interaction and social entrainment in dyadic dance in a free movement context using perceptual and computationally derived measures. Stimuli consisting of 24 point-light animations were created using motion capture data selected from a sample of 99 dyads, based on self-reported trait empathy. Individuals whose Empathy Quotient (EQ) scores were in the top or bottom quartile of all scores were considered to have high or low empathy, respectively, and twelve dyads comprised of four high-high, four low-low, and four high-low empathy combinations were identified. Animations of these dyads were…
A qualitative study of pre-service teachers’ experienced benefits and concerns of using motivational interaction in practice after a training course
2022
This is a pre-print of a published study: Renko, E., Koski-Jännes, A., Absetz, P. et al. A qualitative study of pre-service teachers’ experienced benefits and concerns of using motivational interaction in practice after a training course. Humanit Soc Sci Commun 9, 458 (2022). https://doi.org/10.1057/s41599-022-01484-y Despite its positive effects on physical activity promotion, motivational style of interaction by health professionals is not easily taken up, as shown by meta-analyses of training courses. The concerns professionals experience for taking up the novel skills remain an open question. Preservice physical education teachers were offered a 16-hour training course on motivational i…
The impact of children’s socioemotional development on parenting styles: the moderating effect of social withdrawal
2020
This study focused on associations between children’s socioemotional development (prosocial behaviour, internalizing and externalizing problems) and parenting styles (affection, behavioural control, and psychological control), and the moderating role of children’s social withdrawal (as a temperamental characteristic) in these associations. Children’s socioemotional development (n = 314) were rated by teachers at three-time points (grades 1–3). Parents completed questionnaires measuring their parenting styles at the same three-time points. The level of social withdrawal was obtained at the end of kindergarten from teachers’ reports. Panel analysis showed that prosocial behaviour was associat…

Interaction between students and class teachers in vocational education and training: ‘Safety distance is needed’
2020
Interaction between students and teachers is fundamental and has therefore been widely studied in education. However, there have been few studies on intensive spe-cial support being provided to vocational education and training (VET) students. Firstly, the focus of this article is on students’ perceptions of interactions with their class teachers. Students (aged 17–34 years) from four Finnish vocational institutions providing intensive special support were interviewed. According to the findings, the demands students placed on their class teachers and for interactions with them were modest and their perceptions of both were favourable. Interactions seemed to be study-orientated and class tea…
