Cardiovascular, ventilatory and total activity responses of brown trout to handling stress

1994

Changes in total activity, heart and ventilation rates were observed in 2-year-old brown trout, following handling stress, using non-contact bioelectronic monitoring equipment. Experiments were carried out in laboratory conditions at water temperatures below 4° C, Transfer between tanks as well as 5 min restraint stress increased the total activity of fish for 24 to 48 h, after which it declined to near the pre-stress level. The transfer and struggle both elevated the heart rate for 3 to 4 days. Ventilation rate was elevated to a maximum of about 30% above the nominal level and recovered within 3 to 4 days. Both heart and ventilation rates were higher in feeding fish relative to fasting fis…

Effect of tiotropium/olodaterol combination therapy on long-term heart rate and blood pressure in COPD patients

2018

Introduction: Cardiovascular (CV) comorbidities are common in COPD, and associated with poor prognosis. LABAs and LAMAs are established COPD treatments whose pharmacology would suggest the potential to increase heart rate (HR) and impact blood pressure (BP). However, previous studies indicate that HR and BP are not negatively influenced by tiotropium (Tio) or olodaterol (Olo) monotherapy. Aims: To determine the effect of dual bronchodilation with Tio/Olo (T/O) on HR and BP. Methods: The 52-week, Phase III TONADO® studies (NCT01431274/NCT01431287) evaluated T/O 5/5 µg, Tio 5 µg or Olo 5 µg, via the Respimat® inhaler, in GOLD 2–4 COPD patients. In this post hoc analysis, long-term changes fro…

Hämodynamik nach sublingualer Applikation von Captopril bei schwerer Herzinsuffizienz*: Eine Pilotstudie

2008

In a preliminary trial, 23 patients in severe left-heart failure and, in some instances, also right-heart failure (NYHA classes III and IV) received a single sublingual dose of 25 mg captopril. Invasive measurement of various haemodynamic parameters indicated (1) an increase in cardiac index and stroke-volume index of 34% and 38%, respectively (P less than 0.001 for each); (2) decrease in pulmonary artery and systemic pressures by an average of 7% and 11.4% (P less than 0.01 and less than 0.001, respectively); (3) no significant change in heart rate and mean right atrial pressure; (4) decrease in systemic and pulmonary artery resistance by 33% and 29% (P less than 0.001 for both); (5) an in…

Beta-receptor desensitization evoked by a multistage ultralong distance exercise in the desert?

2021

Background Few studies addressed to the evolution of cardiac function during a multistage ultra-long duration exercise (MULDE). Methods Serial echocardiographic assessment of cardiac function was performed in male healthy subjects during the 2014 Marathon des Sables before the race (T1), at the second (T2) and fifth (T3) arrival (236 km) then after 48 h recovery. Analysis were performed by 2 sonographers blind for the results of the other and the time of measure. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA-RM to compare the evolution of the different parameters. Results Among the 20 athletes, 18 completed the study (mean age 42.4, median 42). RR intervals and (Left ventricular End Diasto…

An integrated approach based on uniform quantization for the evaluation of complexity of short-term heart period variability: Application to 24 h Hol…

2007

We propose an integrated approach based on uniform quantization over a small number of levels for the evaluation and characterization of complexity of a process. This approach integrates information-domain analysis based on entropy rate, local nonlinear prediction, and pattern classification based on symbolic analysis. Normalized and non-normalized indexes quantifying complexity over short data sequences (∼300 samples) are derived. This approach provides a rule for deciding the optimal length of the patterns that may be worth considering and some suggestions about possible strategies to group patterns into a smaller number of families. The approach is applied to 24 h Holter recordings of …

Structural and Mechanical Characteristics of the Heart of the Icefish Chionodraco hamatus (Lönnberg)

1991

The absence of haemoglobin from the blood of icefish, antarctic teleosts of the family Chaenichthydae, has stimulated important physiological mechanisms which serve to compensate for the absence of the respiratory pigment. In view of the central role played by the circulation in meeting the oxygen demands of the tissues, it is not surprising to find that the cardiocirculatory system has been extensively remodelled in icefish. These adaptations include: (1) increases in blood volume, from two to four times larger than that in many teleosts (Hemmingsen and Douglas 1970; Holeton 1970); (2) increases in blood flow associated with lowered oxygen demands (Hemmingsen and Douglas 1970; Holeton 1970…

Ability of short-time Fourier transform method to detect transient changes in vagal effects on hearts: a pharmacological blocking study.

2006

Conventional spectral analyses of heart rate variability (HRV) have been limited to stationary signals and have not allowed the obtainment of information during transient autonomic cardiac responses. In the present study, we evaluated the ability of the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) method to detect transient changes in vagal effects on the heart. We derived high-frequency power (HFP, 0.20–0.40 Hz) as a function of time during active orthostatic task (AOT) from the sitting to standing posture before and after selective vagal (atropine sulfate 0.04 mg/kg) and sympathetic (metoprolol 0.20 mg/kg) blockades. The HFP minimum point during the first 30 s after standing up was calculated and…

3,4-trans-4-Aryl-3-(1-pyridinio)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine-6-thiolates—new group of potential cardiotonic drugs

2005

Abstract 3,4- trans -4-Aryl-3-(1-pyridinio)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine-6-thiolates 6 – 11 were prepared by a Michael reaction of N -acetonylpyridinium chloride with 3-aryl-2-cyanothioacrylamides or by a one-pot three-carbon condensation of N -acetonylpyridinium chloride, aromatic aldehyde and 2-cyanothioacetamide, and their cardiotonic properties were studied. 3,4- trans -5-cyano-2-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-3-(1-pyridinio)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine-6-thiolate 8 was considered as a lead compound in this series since it in vitro experiments (spontaneously beating rat atria) showed a cardiotonic activity similar to that of milrinone 2 , however compound 8 induced activity at lover co…

Vascular resistance arm of the baroreflex: methodology and comparison with the cardiac chronotropic arm.

2020

Baroreflex response consists of cardiac chronotropic (effect on heart rate), cardiac inotropic (on contractility), venous (on venous return) and vascular (on vascular resistance) arms. Because of its measurement simplicity, cardiac chronotropic arm is most often analysed. The aim was to introduce a method to assess vascular baroreflex arm, and to characterize its changes during stress. We evaluated the effect of orthostasis and mental arithmetics (MA) in 39 (22 female, median age: 18.7 yrs.) and 36 (21 female, 19.2 yrs.) healthy volunteers, respectively. We recorded systolic and mean blood pressure (SBP and MBP) by volume-clamp method and R-R interval (RR) by ECG. Cardiac output (CO) was re…
