Predictors of individual adaptation to high-volume or high-intensity endurance training in recreational endurance runners

2015

The aim of this study was to investigate factors that can predict individual adaptation to high-volume or high-intensity endurance training. After the first 8-week preparation period, 37 recreational endurance runners were matched into the high-volume training group (HVT) and high-intensity training group (HIT). During the next 8-week training period, HVT increased their running training volume and HIT increased training intensity. Endurance performance characteristics, heart rate variability (HRV), and serum hormone concentrations were measured before and after the training periods. While HIT improved peak treadmill running speed (RSpeak ) 3.1 ± 2.8% (P < 0.001), no significant changes occ…

Spectral decomposition of RR-variability obtained by an open loop parametric model for the diagnosis of neuromediate syncope

2002

The role of the cardiovascular regulatory mechanism in patients with neuromediate syncope (NS) is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to accomplish continuous non-invasive analysis of the baroreflex mechanism in patients during a head-tip tilt-table test (HTT) using an open-loop autoregressive model with exogenous input. The model describes the causal dependence of the RR interval on the systolic arterial pressure (SAP) variability. Thus, RR variability results as the linear composition of SAP-dependent (Pdep) and SAP-independent parts of the RR power (P). Further, the model allows the estimation of the baroreflex gain using the modulus of the transfer function (G) from SAP to RR i…

A prospective randomized clinical trial compared the effect of various types of local anesthetics cartridges on hypertensive patients during dental e…

2015

Objectives: To evaluate hemodynamic changes of blood pressure and heart rate on hypertensive patients undergoing tooth extraction using various types of local anesthesia (LA). Study Design: A prospective randomized clinical trial was conducted on 45 hypertensive patients who were divided equally into 3 parallel groups according to LA received. Group 1: Lidociane 2% with epinephrine 1: 80,000. Group 2: Prilocaine 3% with Felypressin 0.03 IU/ml. Group 3: Mepivacaine 3% plain. Inclusion criteria: hypertensive patients, under medical management with blood pressure ≤ 159/99. Exclusion criteria: Blood pressure ≥160 /100 and patients receiving β blockers. Negative aspiration was mandatory before t…

Available Instruments to Assess Pain in Infants

2021

Pain assessment in newborns and infants is challenging for clinicians. Although behavioral and behavioral-physiological scales are validated pain assessment instruments, their use in this age group has significant limitations. In this review, we summarize the methods currently available for assessing pain in neonates and infants. It is possible that these pain detection methods are also useful for assessing the quality of anesthesia and analgosedation in these populations. Further research should be aimed at confirming the usefulness of these tools in infants and identifying additional pain assessment options for clinical practice.

Effect of a Biofeedback Intervention on Heart Rate Variability in Individuals With Panic Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial

2021

OBJECTIVE Some individuals with panic disorder (PD) display reduced heart rate variability, which may result in an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. Heart rate variability-biofeedback (HRV-BF) training has been shown to improve the modulation of the autonomic activity. Therefore, this randomized controlled trial was conducted to investigate the effect of a four-week HRV-BF intervention in individuals with PD. Heart rate variability-biofeedback (HRV-BF) training improved the modulation of the autonomic activity. Therefore, with this randomized controlled trial we aimed to investigate the effect of a four-week HRV-BF intervention in people with PD. METHODS Thirty-six women and sixte…

Heart Rate Variability in Children and Adolescents with Cerebral Palsy—A Systematic Literature Review

2020

Cardiac autonomic dysfunction has been reported in patients with cerebral palsy (CP). The aim of this study was to assess the existing literature on heart rate variability (HRV) in pediatric patients with CP and a special attention was paid to the compliance of the studies with the current HRV assessment and interpretation guidelines. A systematic review was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) databases searched for English language publications from 1996 to 2019 using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms “heart rate variability” and “cerebral palsy” in conjunction with additional inclusion criteria: studies limited to …

Safety and efficacy of exercise testing with atropine in patients with recent uncomplicated ST elevation acute myocardial infarction

2012

Background: Exercise testing (ET) remains the most accessible and widely used technique for the detection of coronary artery disease (CAD) and for the assessment of its severity. Failure to reach 85% of maximal predicted heart rate (MPHR) during exercise may render an ET nondiagnostic for ischemia detection in patients with recent uncomplicated ST elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI). We sought to investigate the injection of atropine in patients who fail to achieve 85% of age-predicted heart rate during ET, defining its safety and efficacy to raise heart rate to adequate levels as well as to determine its effect on ET interpretation. Methods: Between January 2005 and December 2008…

The Effects of Alcohol Consumption on Recovery Following Resistance Exercise: A Systematic Review

2019

Background: The aim of this manuscript was to describe the effects of alcohol ingestion on recovery following resistance exercise. Methods: A literature search was performed using the following database: Web of Science, NLM Pubmed, and Scopus. Studies regarding alcohol consumption after resistance exercise evaluating recovery were considered for investigation. The main outcomes took into account biological, physical and cognitive measures. Multiple trained researchers independently screened eligible studies according to the eligibility criteria, extracted data and assessed risk of bias. Results: A total of 12 studies were considered eligible and included in the quantitative synthesis: 10 in…
