Effect of Streptomycin on Stretch-Induced Change in Myocardial Activation During Ventricular Fibrillation

2008

The aim of this study was to determine whether the changes in myocardial activation pattern resulting from acute stretching during ventricular fibrillation can be counteracted by administering a compound that blocks receptors sensitive to stretch. The study involved 16 isolated rabbit hearts, in which refractoriness and activation frequency during ventricular fibrillation were measured before, during and after localized acute stretching of the left ventricular free wall, either without (series A, n=8) or with (series B, n=8) the presence of streptomycin, 200 micromol. At baseline and during and after stretching, ventricular fibrillation was slower with streptomycin perfusion in series B tha…

A prospective randomized clinical trial compared the effect of various types of local anesthetics cartridges on hypertensive patients during dental e…

2015

Objectives: To evaluate hemodynamic changes of blood pressure and heart rate on hypertensive patients undergoing tooth extraction using various types of local anesthesia (LA). Study Design: A prospective randomized clinical trial was conducted on 45 hypertensive patients who were divided equally into 3 parallel groups according to LA received. Group 1: Lidociane 2% with epinephrine 1: 80,000. Group 2: Prilocaine 3% with Felypressin 0.03 IU/ml. Group 3: Mepivacaine 3% plain. Inclusion criteria: hypertensive patients, under medical management with blood pressure ≤ 159/99. Exclusion criteria: Blood pressure ≥160 /100 and patients receiving β blockers. Negative aspiration was mandatory before t…

Hiatal herniation of the stomach and pancreas in a patient with oxygen desaturations

2013

Hiatal hernia (HH), a neglected cause of cardiorespiratory symptoms, is a frequent entity characterized by the displacement of the gastro- esophageal junction and part of the stomach into the mediastinum. Although often asymptomatic, HH may also exert a wide spectrum of clinical presentations due to cardio-pulmonary compression, including acute cardiovascular events such as arrhythmias, post-prandial syncope, angina-like chest pain, recurrent acute heart failure, hemodynamic collapse, electrocardiographic changes (T-wave inversion, ST elevation) simulating myocardial ischemia or pericarditis, and respiratory manifestations that can range from exercise intolerance and dyspnea on exertion to …

Electrical Stimulation of Skeletal Muscles An Alternative to Aerobic Exercise Training in Patients With Chronic Heart Failure?

2006

The aim of this study was to investigate whether electrical stimulation of skeletal muscles could represent a rehabilitation alternative for patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Thirty patients with CHF and NYHA class II-III were randomly assigned to a rehabilitation program using either electrical stimulation of skeletal muscles or bicycle training. Patients in the first group (n = 15) had 8 weeks of home-based low-frequency electrical stimulation (LFES) applied simultaneously to the quadriceps and calf muscles of both legs (1 h/day for 7 days/week); patients in the second group (n = 15) underwent 8 weeks of 40 minute aerobic exercise (3 times a week). After the 8-week period signifi…

Bifocal Stimulation in Patient with Congenitally Corrected Transposition of Great Vessels

2011

Congenitally corrected transposition of the great vessels (CCTGV) is a rare congenital heart defect associated with multiple cardiac morphological abnormalities and conduction defects. Complete atrioventricular (AV) block occurs in 30% of patients and it may be present at birth or develop later with a rate of 2% per year; moreover, a systemic right ventricle is frequently characterized by heart failure in adult life. We used a bifocal cardiac stimulation for a young woman affected by CCTGV and atrioventricular Mobitz 2 and 2:1 block, considering structural, anatomic condition, and the high rate of pacing she underwent. The Prognostic Role of Hypertrabeculation By Cardiac Magnetic Resonance in Thalassemia Intermedia Patients

2016

Abstract Background. Differentiation of left ventricle non-compaction (LVNC) from hypertrabeculated LV due to a negative heart remodeling in thalassemia intermedia (TI) can depends on the selected CMR criterion. The recently proposed Piga's criterion (NC/C ratio threshold of >2.5, Am J Haem 2012) seems to have a low specificity to identify the true LVNC in TI. Anyway, the Piga's criterion could well detect easy a negative heart remodeling in TI patients. Purpose: To assess prospectively whether the Piga's criterion has a prognostic role for adverse cardiovascular outcomes in TI patients. Methods. We studied prospectively by CMR 168 TI patients (81 males, mean age 38.32 ±11.61 years) cons…

The anatomy of the heart in the sonogram. A comparison between anatomic and ultrasonic cross-section.

1977

Cardiac sonography has only recently been introduced as a diagnostic procedure. In order to facilitate the interpretation and evaluation of the ultrasonic cardiac cross-section displayed by this two-dimensional technique, we performed anatomic cross-sections corresponding to ultrasonic cross-sections. The ultrasonic cross-sectional images were taken from children with a real-time-motion scanner. The anatomic cross-sections were taken from adult hearts. Two ultrasonic transverse cross-sections are compared with the two corresponding anatomic cross-sections and three ultrasonic longitudinal cross-sections with one corresponding anatomic cross-section. The direct comparison between anatomic an…
