Prehatching maternal investment and offspring immunity in the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca).

2007

Maternal investment in offspring immunity via egg quality may be an adaptive evolutionary strategy shaped by natural selection. We investigated how maternal investment in eggs can influence offspring immunity by conducting two experiments. First, we manipulated foraging performance of the mothers before egg laying by attaching a small weight to their back feathers. During the nestling period, we investigated offspring total antibody production at the age of 7 days and after antibody challenge, and conducted a partial cross-fostering design to separate the effects of the experiment and rearing-related variation on offspring immunity. In a separate experiment, partial cross-fostering with ant…

Numerical analysis for formability boundaries definition in sheet metal forming operations

2008

Formability limits in sheet metal forming have been widely investigated through different approaches. The main aim of such approaches was to develop tools able to prevent or predict fracture occurrence in order to improve production quality. Forming limit diagrams (FLDs) and fracture criteria are probably the most utilised tools in this field; nevertheless, some drawbacks of such tools were demonstrated. In particular, forming limit curves are characterised by ineffective prediction capability if non linear deformation paths are taken into account. Moreover, the importance of stress paths was demonstrated in order to predict fracture, and forming limit stress diagrams are, nowadays, deeply …

Analysis of stamping performances of dual phase steels: A multi-objective approach to reduce springback and thinning failure

2009

The industrial interest on light weight components has contributed in the last years to a significant research effort on new materials able to guarantee high mechanical properties, good formability and reasonable costs together with reduced weights when compared to traditional mild steels. Among such materials advanced high strength steels (AHSS) such as transformations induced plasticity (TRIP) and dual phase (DP), and light weight alloys proved their usefulness in stamping of automotive components. As AHSS are concerned, one of the main drawbacks is related to springback occurrence. Many aspects have to be taken into account when springback reduction is investigated: material behavior iss…

The nucleotide and deduced amino acid structures of sheep and pig fetuin. Common structural features of the mammalian fetuin family

1992

This study was initiated to gain further insight into the structural features of the mammalian fetuin family. The cDNA structures of sheep and pig fetuin were determined. The cDNA insert encoding sheep (pig) fetuin comprised 1550 (1470) nucleotides, including 54 (46) nucleotides encoding a signal peptide of 18 (15) residues and 1038 (1041) nucleotides encoding the 346 (347) amino acids of the mature plasma protein. The predicted amino-terminal sequence of the mature pig fetuin was confirmed by the amino-terminal sequence of the purified protein. However, two alternative sheep amino-terminal sequences were found in fetuin purified from the plasma of a single sheep fetus; the minor product wa…

Validation of the use of Actigraph GT3X accelerometers to estimate energy expenditure in full time manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injury.

2013

Study design: Cross-sectional validation study. Objectives: The goals of this study were to validate the use of accelerometers by means of multiple linear models (MLMs) to estimate the O2 consumption (VO2) in paraplegic persons and to determine the best placement for accelerometers on the human body. Setting: Non-hospitalized paraplegics’ community. Methods: Twenty participants (age=40.03 years, weight=75.8 kg and height=1.76 m) completed sedentary, propulsion and housework activities for 10 min each. A portable gas analyzer was used to record VO2. Additionally, four accelerometers (placed on the non-dominant chest, non-dominant waist and both wrists) were used to collect second-by-second a…

British society in gothic rock : Siouxsie and the Banshees 1978-79

2014

Tutkielman tarkoituksena on tarkastella, kuinka 1970-luvun brittiläistä yhteiskuntaa käsitellään Siouxsie and the Banshees -yhtyeen sanoituksissa. Siouxsie and the Banshees perustettiin 1970-luvun lopulla punk-musiikin jälkimainingeissa ja sitä pidetään yhtenä ensimmäisistä goottirock-yhtyeistä. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan sitä, jatkuuko punk-alakulttuurille ominainen yhteiskuntakritiikki Bansheesin sanoituksissa vai vastaako yhtyeen musiikki nykykäsitystä, jonka mukaan goottirock on enimmäkseen epäpoliittista. Tutkielman teoreettisena viitekehyksenä käytettiin kriittisen diskurssianalyysin (CDA) taustaoletuksia. Kriittinen diskurssianalyysi mahdollistaa useiden eri lähetysmistapojen yhdist…

Nodular Lesion in Cheek With a Hair Tuft

2017

Trichostasis spinulosa is a rarely diagnosed disorder of the pilosebaceous unit, characterized by retention of telogen hairs within the dilated follicles. A hair tuft can be seen protruding from the follicles. We present a case of trichostasis spinulosa associated with intradermal melanocytic nevi, where dermoscopy helps to identify this entity.

The crystal structure of bacteriophage Qβ at 3.5 å resolution

1996

Abstract Background: The capsid protein subunits of small RNA bacteriophages form a T=3 particle upon assembly and RNA encapsidation. Dimers of the capsid protein repress translation of the replicase gene product by binding to the ribosome binding site and this interaction is believed to initiate RNA encapsidation. We have determined the crystal structure of phage Qβ with the aim of clarifying which factors are the most important for particle assembly and RNA interaction in the small phages. Results The crystal structure of bacteriophage Qβ determined at 3.5 a resolution shows that the capsid is stabilized by disulfide bonds on each side of the flexible loops that are situated around the fi…
