Identification, typing, and investigation of the dairy characteristics of lactic acid bacteria isolated from 'Vastedda della valle del Belìce' cheese
2013
Traditional cheeses made without starter cultures can be characterised by the attribute of instability. The addition of autochthonous starter cultures can ensure stability without compromising the characteristics of the final product. This study aimed to characterise the autochthonous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) population in “Vastedda della valle del Belice” cheeses, which have a protected designation of origin (PDO) status, in order to develop an ad hoc starter culture to be used in its future production. Winter and spring productions were analysed to ensure isolation of specific LAB that had adapted to perform fermentation at low temperatures. Plate counts revealed total microbial numbers…

ASR in Classroom Today : Automatic Visualization of Conceptual Network in Science Classrooms
2017
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) field has improved substantially in the last years. We are in a point never saw before, where we can apply such algorithms in non-ideal conditions such as real classrooms. In these scenarios it is still not possible to reach perfect recognition rates, however we can already take advantage of these improvements. This paper shows preliminary results using ASR in Chilean and Finnish middle and high school to automatically provide teachers a visualization of the structure of concepts present in their discourse in science classrooms. These visualizations are conceptual networks that relate key concepts used by the teacher. This is an interesting tool that gives…
Porewater pressure control on subglacial soft sediment remobilization and tunnel valley formation: A case study from the Alnif tunnel valley (Morocco)
2014
25 pages; International audience; In the eastern part of the Moroccan Anti-Atlas Mountains, the Alnif area exposes a buried Ordovician glacial tunnel valley (5 km wide, 180 m deep) cut into preglacial marine sediments. The preglacial sedimentary sequence, deposited in a marine environment, is characterized by a typical "layer-cake" configuration of permeable (sand) and impermeable (clays and early-cemented sandstones) layers. At the base of the tunnel valley, a discontinuous and fan-shaped glacial conglomeratic unit 10 to 15 m thick occurs, erosively deposited over preglacial marine sediments. The conglomeratic unit is composed of preglacial intraclasts embedded within a sandy matrix. Both …
Painful procedures in the NICU
2012
The authors after a brief introduction on the development of the perception of pain in the fetus and newborn, focus attention on the problem of painful procedures that are performed in the neonatal intensive care units reported in the scientific literature. Then report the design of the double-blind study that is taking place from February 2012 at the NICU ARNAS Civic - Palermo using three different concentrations of sucrose as analgesia during venipuncture and heel puncture in term neonates.
Tracing the ICME plasma with a MHD simulation
2021
The determination of the chemical composition of interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) plasma is an open issue. More specifically, it is not yet fully understood how remote sensing observations of the solar corona plasma during solar disturbances evolve into plasma properties measured in situ away from the Sun. The ambient conditions of the background interplanetary plasma are important for space weather because they influence the evolutions, arrival times, and geo-effectiveness of the disturbances. The Reverse In situ and MHD APproach (RIMAP) is a technique to reconstruct the heliosphere on the ecliptic plane (including the magnetic Parker spiral) directly from in situ measurements a…
Suomalaisten 4-luokkalaisten lukutaito : PIRLS 2016 -tutkimuksen keskeisiä tuloksia
2018
Joulukuussa 2017 julkaistiin kansainvälisen lasten lukutaitotutkimuksen (PIRLS) tulokset (ks. Leino ym. 2017).

Microwave response of a cylindrical cavity made of bulk MgB2 superconductor
2008
We report on the microwave properties of a resonant cylindrical cavity made of bulk MgB2 superconductor, produced by the reactive liquid Mg infiltration process. The frequency response of the cavity has been measured in the range 5-13GHz. Among the various modes, the TE011, resonating at 9.79GHz, exhibits the highest quality factor. For this mode, we have determined the temperature dependence of the quality factor, obtaining values of the order of 10^5 in the temperature range 4.2-30K. The values of the surface resistance deduced from the measurements of the quality factor agree quite well with those independently measured in a small sample of MgB2 extracted from the same specimen from whic…
Microwave Response of Coaxial Cavities Made of Bulk Magnesium Diboride
2014
We report on the microwave (mw) properties of coaxial cavities built by using bulk MgB2 superconductor prepared by reactive liquid Mg infiltration technology. We have assembled a homogeneous cavity, by using an outer MgB2 cylinder and an inner MgB2 rod, and a hybrid cavity by using an outer copper cylinder and the same MgB2 rod as inner conductor. By the analysis of the resonance curves, in the different resonant modes, we have determined the microwave surface resistance, Rs, of the MgB2 materials as a function of the temperature and the frequency, in the absence of DC magnetic fields. At T = 4.2 K and f = 2.5 GHz, by a mw pulsed technique, we have determined the quality factor of the homog…
