Single-Point Incremental Forming of Titanium and Titanium Alloy Sheets.
2021
Incremental sheet forming of titanium and its alloys has a significant role in modern manufacturing techniques because it allows for the production of high-quality products with complex shapes at low production costs. Stamping processes are a major contributor to plastic working techniques in industries such as automotive, aerospace and medicine. This article reviews the development of the single-point incremental forming (SPIF) technique in titanium and its alloys. Problems of a tribological and microstructural nature that make it difficult to obtain components with the desired geometric and shape accuracy are discussed. Great emphasis is placed on current trends in SPIF of difficult-to-fo…
Polyphasic Characterization of Microbiota of “Mastredda”, a Traditional Wooden Tool Used during the Production of PDO Provola dei Nebrodi Cheese
2021
The biofilms of the wooden tables used for the acidification of the curd were investigated for PDO Provola dei Nebrodi cheese, a traditional stretched cheese made in eastern Sicily (southern Italy) from raw cows’ milk. To this purpose the wooden tables of four dairy facilities were analysed for their microbiota by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis and a combined culture-independent and -dependent microbiological approach. SEM inspection showed an almost continuous biofilm formation. MiSeq Illumina analysis identified 8 phyla, 16 classes, 25 orders, 47 families and 50 genera. Corynebacterium, Bifidobacterium and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were detected in all samples. In particular…
Test-Day Model Heritabilities for somatic cvell score and production traits in primiparous Valle del Belice sheep
2006
A repeatability test-day animal model was used to investigate heritabilities of somatic cell score (SCS) and milk production traits in Valle del Belice sheep. The heritability estimate for SCS falls within the range reported in literature (0.14±0.03), while estimates for milk production and composition traits were below those obtained by others, 0.12±0.03, 0.09±0.02, 0.14±0.03, 0.14±0.03, and 0.12±0.03, respectively, for milk yield, fat %, fat yield, protein %, and protein yield. Flock-test-day had a substantial effect on milk production traits but not on SCS. These results provide the basic parameters required for discussion of selection strategies and objectives in Valle del Belice sheep.

Evaluation of GPU-based Seed Generation for Computational Genomics Using Burrows-Wheeler Transform
2012
Unprecedented production of short reads from the new high-throughput sequencers has posed challenges to align short reads to reference genomes with high sensitivity and high speed. Many CPU-based short read aligners have been developed to address this challenge. Among them, one popular approach is the seed-and-extend heuristic. For this heuristic, the first and foremost step is to generate seeds between the input reads and the reference genome, where hash tables are the most frequently used data structure. However, hash tables are memory-consuming, making it not well-suited to memory-stringent many-core architectures, like GPUs, even though they usually have a nearly constant query time com…
Boosting Textual Compression in Optimal Linear Time
2005
We provide a general boosting technique for Textual Data Compression. Qualitatively, it takes a good compression algorithm and turns it into an algorithm with a better compression performance guarantee. It displays the following remarkable properties: (a) it can turn any memoryless compressor into a compression algorithm that uses the “best possible” contexts; (b) it is very simple and optimal in terms of time; and (c) it admits a decompression algorithm again optimal in time. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first boosting technique displaying these properties.Technically, our boosting technique builds upon three main ingredients: the Burrows--Wheeler Transform, the Suffix Tree d…
The Burrows-Wheeler Transform between Data Compression and Combinatorics on Words
2013
The Burrows-Wheeler Transform (BWT) is a tool of fundamental importance in Data Compression and, recently, has found many applications well beyond its original purpose. The main goal of this paper is to highlight the mathematical and combinatorial properties on which the outstanding versatility of the $BWT$ is based, i.e. its reversibility and the clustering effect on the output. Such properties have aroused curiosity and fervent interest in the scientific world both for theoretical aspects and for practical effects. In particular, in this paper we are interested both to survey the theoretical research issues which, by taking their cue from Data Compression, have been developed in the conte…

A Comparative Study of Natural Fiber and Glass Fiber Fabrics Properties with Metal or Oxide Coatings
2015
Rapidly growing global demand for technical textiles industries is stimulated to develop new materials based on hybrid materials (yarns, fabrics) made from natural and glass fibres. The influence of moisture on the electrical properties of metal and metal oxide coated bast (flax, hemp) fibre and glass fibre fabrics are studied by electrical impedance spectroscopy and thermogravimetry. The bast fibre and glass fiber fabrics are characterized with electrical sheet resistance. The method for description of electrical sheet resistance of the metal and metal oxide coated technical textile is discussed. The method can be used by designers to estimate the influence of moisture on technical data of…
Experimental Investigation of the Shear Response of Precast Steel-Concrete Trussed Beams
2017
The results of an experimental campaign of three-point bending tests on precast composite beams, named hybrid steel-trussed concrete beams (HSTCBs), are provided. HSTCBs are typically constituted by a precast steel truss embedded in a block of concrete cast in place. Two series of specimens were manufactured, designed such that shear failure would occur, and tested under positive and negative bending moment. The experimental results obtained showed that fragile shear failure occurred in almost all cases, evidencing the crisis of the compressed concrete strut involved in the collapse mechanism. Yielding of the steel members provided ductility to the system, especially in those cases in which…
