Stability of Embankments Resting on Foundation Soils with A Weak Layer
2021
The presence of weak layers in geotechnical systems, including soil or rock masses, both natural and man-made, is more frequent than is normally believed. Weak layers can affect both failure mechanisms, in drained and in undrained conditions, as well as in static and seismic conditions, and the safety factor. In the present study, conducted numerically using the finite-element method (FEM) Plaxis 2D code, the influence of a horizontal thin weak layer on stress and strain distribution, on failure mechanisms and on the overall stability of an embankment was evaluated. The results obtained prove that when the weak layer is located at a significant depth from the foundation plane, the failure m…
Toward the Development of Load Transfer Efficiency Evaluation of Rigid Pavements by a Rolling Wheel Deflectometer
2020
The jointed rigid pavement is currently evaluated by the Falling weight deflectometer which is rather slow for the testing of the jointed pavements. Continuous nondestructive evaluation of rigid pavements with a rolling wheel deflectometer can be used to measure the load transfer and is investigated. Load transfer is an important indicator of the rigid pavement&rsquo
Uppfattningar om språkbruket på daghem hos föräldrarna till tvåspråkiga barn
2016
Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on kartoittaa millaisia käsityksiä monikielisten perheiden vanhemmilla on ruotsinkielisten päiväkotien kielenkäytöstä, sekä kenelle vastuu kielenkäytöstä vanhempien mielestä kuuluu. Koska ympäristön asenteet vaikuttavat kielenoppimismotivaatioon, on vanhempien mielipiteiden selvittäminen tärkeää, jotta lasten kielenomaksumista voitaisiin tukea paremmin. Tutkielman aineistona olevat haastattelut ovat osa Jyväskylän yliopiston Child2ling-tutkimusta (2014), jossa tutkitaan kaksikielisiä perheitä kolmella eri paikkakunnalla Suomessa. Aineisto on analysoitu aineistolähtöisesti sisällönanalyysillä diskurssianalyysia apuna käyttäen tutkimuksen kannalta oleellisen tie…
Bokläsningssituationer hos tvåspråkiga familjer
2015
Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on tutkia suomalaisten kaksikielisten perheiden kirjanlukutilanteita. Tutkielman aineisto on kerätty Jyväskylän yliopiston Child2ling-tutkimusprojektin yhteydessä.

This article discusses multilingualism in a family. We introduce a case study of the use and role of different languages in a family of fi ve. The data were gathered with the help of a visual clock activity previously used in literacy studies, and through interviews. Theoretically, we draw on those dialogical and sociolinguistic notions that regard language as a dynamic phenomenon which is heteroglossic in nature, thus stressing the fundamental multilingualism present in language use. The results of this case study show that there is, indeed, a lot of situated variation in the use of different languages and, further, different values and functions given to different languages that also vary…
Exploring heterogeneous ICT use among older adults: The warm experts’ perspective
2020
In this article, we (1) examine the various forms of support required by older users (75+) of digital technology and (2) provide a concrete, everyday life rationale for why warm experts play such a pivotal role in the processes of adopting and using ICT. Although warm experts are usually not older adults themselves, they provide an important mediating view on the technology use among older people that has not been rigorously addressed in previous studies. Thus, in our analysis we examine the younger family members’ views on acting as warm experts to their older family members. The research data consist of 22 extended group interviews (EGI) and observation carried out in Finland. Based on ou…
Sur les traces du mouton en Gaule
2005
Concerning the evidence for sheep in Gaul.- In northern Gaul, bones of sheep and goat are found in most Iron Age sites, farms, villages, graves and shrines. It is difficult to establish a good distinction between the bones of these two species, but sheep are more numerous than goat. This short paper deals with the use of these animals in domestic and ritual practices over a long period, from the Late Bronze Age to the beginning of Roman period. The fact that these animals are represented by bones encourages the study of meat consumption. Mutton is consumed in domestic contexts, but it is also offered during banquets in shrines, public areas in villages or other places, and plays a role duri…
Non-abusing mothers’ agency after disclosure of the child’s extra-familial sexual abuse
2020
This qualitative study analysed the agency of eight non-abusing mothers in the Turkish Cypriot Community after disclosure that their child had been sexually abused by someone outside the family. The aim was to discover how, after disclosure, such mothers act to protect their children in the contexts of their family and community. The data were gathered via semi-structured in-depth interviews and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). In the nuclear family context, maternal agency emerged in the form of motherhood skills, including emotionally supporting the abused child, double-checking the child’s safety or limiting the child’s mobility, and controlling the actions…
Äitien pyrkimykset ja toimintamahdollisuuksien valikko : käsitteellinen tutkimus äitien taloudellisista toimintamahdollisuuksista
2018
This study addresses the conceptual outlines of the financial capabilities of moth- ers. It examines how the perspectives and concepts of the capability approach can be utilized in outlining the relationship between motherhood and financial aspects. The aim is to develop conceptual tools for analyzing the choices and financial agency of mothers. This study emphasizes the methodological dimension using three elements: the capability approach, feminist economics and memory work. The main element of the study is the capability approach, which provides the perspective of the inquiry and the concepts for analysis. Feminist economics provides a definition of economy and a way to produce knowledge…
The influence of somatic cell count on sheep milk composition and cheese-making properties
2005
Somatic cell count (SCC) is an important tool for monitoring intramammary infections in dairy cows. However, systematic generalization of this decision rule is not easy in small ruminants. Determination of SCC in sheep milk is important for the processors of milk (indicator of quality), for breeders (mastitis indicator) and could be useful for selection as well. SCC value can be affected by some non-infective factors such as breed, stage of lactation, parity, type of lambing, type of milking, etc. (Bergonier et al., 1994), as well the health status of the udder (Fruganti et al., 1985; Ranucci et al., 1988). In addition, EC Directive 92/46, which regulates the production and commercialisatio…
