Channel forms recovery in an ephemeral river after gravel mining (Palancia River, Eastern Spain)
2017
[EN] During the 1970s, the Palancia River was intensively affected by gravel mining instream. This activity completely destroyed the fluvial forms, devastating the original wandering pattern. At the end of the 1980s, gravel mining ceased and the river started a process of recovery, only altered by several clearing operations. The aim of this work is to describe these processes of change, analyzing the river's morphosedimentary conditions through a GIS analysis of aerial photographs previous to, simultaneous with, and subsequent to the intense gravel mining activity. Results explain the current difficulties of some ephemeral rivers to recover their original forms, because of the sediment and…
SMOS REFLEX 2003: L-band emissivity characterization of vineyards
2005
The goal of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission over land is to infer surface soil moisture from multiangular L-band radiometric measurements. As the canopy affects the microwave emission of land, it is necessary to characterize different vegetation layers. This paper presents the Reference Pixel L-Band Experiment (REFLEX), carried out in June-July 2003 at the Vale/spl grave/ncia Anchor Station, Spain, to study the effects of grapevines on the soil emission and on the soil moisture retrieval. A wide range of soil moisture (SM), from saturated to completely dry soil, was measured with the Universitat Polite/spl grave/cnica de Catalunya's L-band Automatic Radiometer (LAURA). Concurre…

Simulation model comparing the hydroperiod of temporary ponds with different shapes
2010
A model of the water dynamics for shallow, small and temporary Mediterranean ponds has been developed taking into account the annual patterns of rainfall and potential evaporation, pond parameters (pond area, depth and shape) and watershed parameters (watershed area and saturated water content of the soil). This model predicts the amount of water retained in the pond in real time and therefore, when a pond is going to dry out. It is then possible to calculate how much water will remain in the pond after raining or the number of days per year that the pond is going to be dry. Analyses have been performed for different shapes of ponds and sensitivity of the state variables, at different value…
Rainfall timing and runoff: The influence of the criterion for rain event separation
2016
Abstract Rain is not uniform in time and space in semiarid areas and its distribution is very important for the runoff process. Hydrological studies usually divide rainfall into events. However, defining rain events is complicated, and rain characteristics vary depending on how the events are delimited. Choosing a minimum inter-event time (MIT) is a commonly used criterion. Our hypothesis is that there will be an optimal MIT that explains the maximum part of the variance of the runoff, with time to runoff used as a surrogate. The objective is to establish a procedure in order to decide upon this optimal MIT. We developed regressions between time to runoff (T0) and three descriptive variable…
Rainfall-runoff modelling of ephemeral streams in the Valencia Region (Eastern Spain)
2002
This paper presents preliminary results from the application of a transfer-function rainfallrunoff model to ephemeral streams in Mediterranean Spain. Flow simulations have been conducted for two small catchments (Carraixet and Poyo basins), located in close proximity to one another yet with significantly different geological characteristics. Analysis of flow simulations for a number of high-flow events has revealed the dominant influence of the rainfall on the catchment response, particularly for high-rainfall events. Particular success has been attained modelling the highest magnitude events in both catchments and for all events in the faster responding (Poyo) catchment. In order to invest…
This pa…
