El dibujado: volver a la pared

2021

The exhibition El dibujado by Paco Roca (IVAM, 2019) is an exploration of the paradigm shift brought forth by the abandonment of paper and reproducibility as a space for the dissemination of the comic strip. The exhibition hall of a museum (the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno) becomes a space for formal and ephemeral experimentation at different levels, from the purely creative to the pondering about the unexplored possibilities of the language of the comic book. With this exhibition cartoonist Paco Roca poses a challenge to a spectator who is called to leave his/her role as a visitor and become the reader of an experience in which s/he becomes a part of the work’s own narrative. The a…

Performance Analysis of M-Ary PSK Modulation Schemes over Multiple Double Rayleigh Fading Channels with EGC in Cooperative Networks

2010

This article studies the performance of M-ary phase shift keying (PSK) modulation schemes over mobile-to-mobile (M2M) fading channels with equal gain combining (EGC) in cooperative networks. The frequency-nonselective M2M fading channels are modeled assuming non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation conditions. Furthermore, a dual-hop amplify-and-forward relay type cooperative network is taken into consideration here. It is assumed that K diversity branches are present between the source mobile station and the destination mobile station via K mobile relays. The performance of M-ary PSK modulation schemes is analyzed by evaluating the average bit error probability (BEP). We have derived a simple …

A simple operation strategy of battery storage systems under dynamic electricity pricing: An Italian case study for a medium-scale public facility

2014

In the electricity market, wholesale energy prices depend on the balance between energy production and load demand. In the last few years, electricity market has become more and more flexible as many utilities have started to replace the fixed retail prices schemes with prices changing during the day. Dynamic pricing, also known as Real-Time Pricing (RTP), reflects the trend of the wholesale market and allows to reduce the volatility of the wholesale prices, also contributing to a reduction of demand peaks. Electricity customers take advantage of dynamic pricing by shifting their consumption according to the real-time prices or by using Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to shift electri…

Economic feasibility of a customer-side energy storage in the Italian electricity market

2015

Electricity prices show significant short-term variations during the day due to the need of balancing supply and demand in real time. Normally, customers are not exposed to these variations but pay a constant electricity price. In an attempt to reduce the volatility of the wholesale prices, several utilities are moving from conventional fixed-rate pricing schemes to new market-based models, where the electricity price can fluctuate during the day depending on the market conditions. Examples of time-dependent pricing schemes are Time-Of-Use (TOU) tariffs, where the electricity price can take two or three price levels during the day, or Real-Time Pricing (RTP) tariffs, where the energy price …

View Planning Approach for Automatic 3D Digitization of Unknown Objects

2012

International audience; This paper addresses the view planning problem for the digitization of 3D objects without prior knowledge on their shape and presents a novel surface approach for the Next Best View (NBV) computation. The proposed method uses the concept of Mass Vector Chains (MVC) to define the global orientation of the scanned part. All of the viewpoints satisfying an orientation constraint are clustered using the Mean Shift technique to construct a first set of candidates for the NBV. Then, a weight is assigned to each mode according to the elementary orientations of its different descriptors. The NBV is chosen among the modes with the highest weights and which comply with the rob…

Semi-Supervised Remote Sensing Image Classification based on Clustering and the Mean Map Kernel

2008

This paper presents a semi-supervised classifier based on the combination of the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm for Gaussian mixture models (GMM) and the mean map kernel. The proposed method uses the most reliable samples in terms of maximum likelihood to compute a kernel function that accurately reflects the similarity between clusters in the kernel space. The proposed method improves classification accuracy in situations where the available labeled information does not properly describe the classes in the test image.

Photochemical holes under pressure: Compressibility and volume fluctuations of a protein

1991

From the pressure induced frequency shift of photochemical holes burnt into mesomorphyrin substituted horseradish peroxidase, we determined the compressibility of the protein and the vacuum frequency of the chromophore. From the compressibility, an estimation of the volume fluctuations of the biomolecule is possible.

NMR Study of the (Z)-Phenylhydrazones of 5-Alkyl- and 5-Aryl-3-benzoyl-1,2,4-oxadiazoles: Support for the Interpretation of Kinetic Results on the Re…

2005

An analysis of the 1H, 13C, and 15N NMR substituent chemical shifts (SCSs) of the title compounds in CDCl3 solution has been carried out by using the SCSs of other classes of compounds (arenes, methyl esters or amides), Hammett substituent constants or kinetic data. The results obtained provide information concerning the ground-state electronic distribution of the compounds examined. The results relevant to the carbon and nitrogen atoms of the 1,2,4-oxadiazole ring can be considered of special interest, as the effects of the substit- Introduction For several years our research group has been involved in the use of NMR spectroscopic data (1H, 13C, 15N, and 17O) to obtain information about th…

Configurational effects in17O NMR chemical shifts of hydroxyl-substituted, bicyclo [2.2.1]heptenes and -heptanes, their methylated derivatives and so…

1993

Well resolved natural abundance 17O NMR spectra of 27 mono-, di-, tri- and tetrahydroxybicyclo[2.2.1]heptenes and -heptanes (norbornenes or norbornanes), their methylated derivatives and some related compounds were measured for 0.5 M or saturated solutions in acetonitrile at 65°C. In addition, the 17O NMR chemical shifts of 14 aliphatic and alicyclic alcohols were also determined for reference purposes. The 17O NMR chemical shifts of all compounds were assigned. Both methyl- and hydroxyl-induced deshielding β-effects were consistent with those reported in the literature. Similarly, observed shielding γ-effects were in agreement with the earlier observations and characteristic especially for…
