Focal Therapy for Prostate Cancer: Complications and Their Treatment
2021
Focal therapy is a modern alternative to selectively treat a specific part of the prostate harboring clinically significant disease while preserving the rest of the gland. The aim of this therapeutic approach is to retain the oncological benefit of active treatment and to minimize the side-effects of common radical treatments. The oncological effectiveness of focal therapy is yet to be proven in long-term robust trials. In contrast, the toxicity profile is well-established in randomized controlled trials and multiple robust prospective cohort studies. This narrative review summarizes the relevant evidence on complications and their management after focal therapy. When compared to whole glan…
A paradigm shift: from disease to health orientation
2006
The history of science has been described as 'paradigm shifts' of sequential overthrow, each new paradigm replacing the previous one. A paradigm is an overarching view-point which guides the articulation of theories and other activities in a particular field. In the exploration of health, two different types of approach can be identified. The pathogenic view, which has dominated the orientation of medicine over the last hundred years, focuses on disease states and underlying factors that modify the chances of entering into one of those states. The competing salutogenic view appears to be undergoing a renaissance in the new strategies of public health and health promotion, and producing theo…
Theoretical approach and clinical application of kinetic modelling in dialysis.
1991
Using kinetic modelling for shaping profile dialysis, we present a promising approach to improve the cardiovascular stability of patients during dialysis treatment. In order to obtain an insight into the physiological mechanisms of increased stability, a model considering alterations of electrolytes and water distribution and of acid-base status was developed. This algorithm was used for the evaluation of 114 dialysis sessions, which were performed with highly individualised profiles. Each profile was developed for one patient by trying empirically to prevent episodes of hypotension as well as other clinical problems throughout dialysis. The main advantage of profile dialysis compared to st…
Towards a more explicit account of the transformation: Reply to comments on "An integrative review of the enjoyment of sadness associated with music"
2018
Our integrative framework for explaining the enjoyment of sadness associated with music sparked a delightful number (13) of commentaries which challenge, stimulate, strengthen and shape the ideas we initially put forward. Here we organize our response around five central themes brought up by several commentators. These relate to questions about (a) the nature of sad music, (b) whether music can induce genuine sadness, (c) details of the transformation, (d) music as a technology for emotion regulation, and (e) broader implications and extensions. nonPeerReviewed
Synthesis and characterization of ferrocene-based Schiff base and ferrocenecarboxaldehyde oxime and their adsorptive removal of methyl blue from aque…
2018
Abstract The ferrocene-based Schiff base 3 was synthetized by reaction of ferrocenecarboxaldehyde 1 with 4-aminoantipyrine 2. However, the reaction of 1 with hydroxylamine affords ferrocenecarboxaldehyde oxime 4. Compounds 3 and 4 were fully characterized by IR, 1H, 13C and DEPT-135 NMR spectroscopy, elemental analyses and also by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 3 and 4 were used to remove anionic methyl blue dye from wastewater. The results established that both compounds have high adsorption capacity towards methyl blue. Langmuir adsorption capacity of compound 4 (464 mmol/g) is much higher than that of compound 3 (193 mmol/g) at 25 °C. The kinetics data was fitted well pseudo…

Simple Rules for Complex Near-Glass-Transition Phenomena in Medium-Sized Schiff Bases
2022
Glass-forming ability is one of the most desired properties of organic compounds dedicated to optoelectronic applications. Therefore, finding general structure–property relationships and other rules governing vitrification and related near-glass-transition phenomena is a burning issue for numerous compound families, such as Schiff bases. Hence, we employ differential scanning calorimetry, broadband dielectric spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and quantum density functional theory calculations to investigate near-glass-transition phenomena, as well as ambient- and high-pressure molecular dynamics for two structurally related Schiff bases belonging to the family of glycine imino esters. Firstly…
A SUMOylation-defective MITF germline mutation predisposes to melanoma and renal carcinoma
2011
International audience; So far, no common environmental and/or phenotypic factor has been associated with melanoma and renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The known risk factors for melanoma include sun exposure, pigmentation and nevus phenotypes; risk factors associated with RCC include smoking, obesity and hypertension. A recent study of coexisting melanoma and RCC in the same patients supports a genetic predisposition underlying the association between these two cancers. The microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) has been proposed to act as a melanoma oncogene; it also stimulates the transcription of hypoxia inducible factor (HIF1A), the pathway of which is targeted by kidney canc…
Conceptualizing ecosystem tipping points within a physiological framework
2017
Connecting the nonlinear and often counterintuitive physiological effects of multiple environmental drivers to the emergent impacts on ecosystems is a fundamental challenge. Unfortunately, the disconnect between the way “stressors” (e.g., warming) is considered in organismal (physiological) and ecological (community) contexts continues to hamper progress. Environmental drivers typically elicit biphasic physiological responses, where performance declines at levels above and below some optimum. It is also well understood that species exhibit highly variable response surfaces to these changes so that the optimum level of any environmental driver can vary among interacting species. Thus, specie…
Chromogenic detection of nerve agent mimics
2008
The current rise in international concern over criminal terrorist attacks via chemical warfare (CW) agents has resulted in an increasing interest in the detection of these lethal chemicals. Among CW species, nerve agents are extremely dangerous and their high toxicity and ease of production underscore the need to detect these deadly chemicals via quick and reliable procedures. A number of detection systems have been developed, most of them based on enzymatic and physical methodologies. However, these usually show limitations such as low selectivity, lack of portability and a certain complexity in their use. An alternative to these classical methods that has been gaining interest in recent y…
