Collisional Broadening of Rotational Lines in the Stimulated Raman Pentad Q-Branch of CD4

Self- and argon-broadening coefficients are reported for a number of Raman Q-branch transitions in the nu(1) and nu(2) + nu(4) bands of (C-12)D4 at room temperature (296 K). The coefficients display a variation with j and with C exp n (symmetry species A, E, F) that is essentially independent of collision partner and which is similar to the j- and C exp n-dependence found in previous measurements of the IR line-broadening coefficients. The rotationally inelastic collision rates previously measured by Foy et al. (1988) for (C-13)D4 (V4 = 0, 1) in collision with (C-13)D4 or Ar account for only a part of the Raman broadening rate, suggesting possibly significant contributions to the linewidths…

The LIGO Scientific and Virgo Collaborations have announced the first detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of two neutron stars. The merger rate of binary neutron stars estimated from this event suggests that distant, unresolvable binary neutron stars create a significant astrophysical stochastic gravitational-wave background. The binary neutron star background will add to the background from binary black holes, increasing the amplitude of the total astrophysical background relative to previous expectations. The natural compound chrysosplenol-D is a novel, ultrasensitive optical sensor for detection of Cu(II)

Abstract Herein, we introduce a novel, ultrasensitive optical sensor for determination of Cu(II) ions over the concentration range of 0 to 1 μM Cu(II). The optical sensor is based on the natural molecule chrysosplenol-D (Chp-D) extracted from the flowering plant Chiliadenus montanus (Vahl.) Brullo. Free Chp-D emits fluorescence at 566 nm when excited at 292 nm. Chp-D chelates Cu(II) ions to form a 1:1 (metal:ligand) complex, which quenches the fluorescence emission peak of the free probe at 566 nm. “Turn-off” luminescence could be easily determined and provided distinct proof of the chelation of Cu(II) ions by Chp-D. Seventeen N-(mono-, di-, tri-, tetra- and penta-fluorophenyl)-N′-(3-nitrophenyl)ureas were prepared and characterized. Complete assignment of their 1H, 13C and 19F NMR data was undertaken and the correlation of the chemical shifts of the ureido protons with field-inductive and mesomeric electronic substituent parameters was studied using the Swain–Lupton model. The best correlations were obtained when the study was limited to certain substitution patterns, e.g. non-ortho, mono-ortho- and di-ortho-fluorinated ureas, which reveal probable changes in conformations caused by the degree of ortho fluorination at the phenyl ring. The series of nine 2-benzoylmethylenequinoline difluoroborates have been synthesized and characterized by multinuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and computational methods. The through-space spin-spin couplings between (19)F and (1)H/(13)C nuclei have been observed in solution. The NMR chemical shifts have been correlated to the Hammett substituent constants. The crystal structures of six compounds have been solved by XRD. For two derivatives the X-ray wave function refinement was performed to evaluate the character of bonds in the NBF(2)O moiety by topological and integrated bond descriptors.
Addressing subphthalocyanines and subnaphthalocyanines features relevant to fluorescence imaging

International audience; A series of new synthetic subphthalocyanines bear structural features aimed at allowing either fluorescence activation or a bathochromic shift of the absorption band towards the near-infrared window, relevant to optical imaging. X-ray diffraction studies of four subphthalocyanines are reported. Spectrofluorimetric studies on subnaphthalocyanines and activatable subphthalocyanine pro-fluorophores are reported.
Experimental observation of temporal dispersion gratings in fiber optics

We experimentally demonstrate a temporal analog to the diffraction optical grating in the Fraunhofer formalism. Using amplitude and phase temporal periodic modulations, we show that the accumulation of dispersion in fiber optics induces the development of temporally well-separated sidebands similar to the spatial orders of diffraction that are commonly observed in an optical grating operating in the far field.
Focal shift in optical waves with off-axis focus

We present a formulation for a suitable description of the focal shift in optical waves that have an off-axis focus. This shift that is primarily produced along the chief axis is given in terms of the focal distance and depends only on a parameter that is named as the generalized Fresnel number. Any non-uniform, either truncated and non-apertured optical beam with off-axis focus may be considered.

Abstract The synthesis, EPR, magnetic and Mossbauer properties of two iron(III) complexes are reported. The heterodinuclear iron(III)-copper(II) complex Cu(salen)Fe(acac)2NO3 is obtained as an adduct from the reaction of the two mononuclear moieties, the Cu(salen) molecule and the mononuclear iron(III) molecule Fe(acac)2NO3 acting as a precursor of the dinuclear unit. The latter molecule itself has been prepared by ligand substitution from the tris-acetylacetonate Fe(acac)3. The dinuclear complex is characterized by comparing the properties of the mono- and the dinuclear complex.
