Hunter disease before and during enzyme replacement therapy.

2011

Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (Hunter disease) is a lysosomal storage disease attributable to X-linked deficiency of the enzyme α-L-iduronate-sulfatase. Because of this deficiency, glycosaminoglycanes accumulate in various tissues and body fluids. We describe three patients representing the broad spectrum of Hunter disease and their response to enzyme replacement therapy. Patient 1 did not manifest central nervous system involvement, patient 2 manifested moderate neurologic disease, and patient 3 had already manifested a severe neurologic course during early infancy. In all patients, improvements in visceral organ size, physical capacity, and gastrointestinal functioning were reported. More…

The effects of different basal levels of anxiety on the behavioral shift analyzed in the central platform of the elevated plus maze.

2015

The aim of the present research was to study the effects of different basal levels of anxiety on the behavioral shift studied in the central platform of the elevated plus maze. To this purpose, quantitative and multivariate analyses, the latter based on transition matrix elaboration, were carried out on Wistar and on DA/Han rats the latter belonging to a strain characterized by different reactivity to anxiogenic stimuli. Wistar rats spent 74.11 ± 5.11 s in the central platform, whereas DA/Han significantly more: 127.08 ± 9.87. Per cent distributions evidenced a clear-cut difference in walking activities (46.25% in Wistar, 28.4% in DA/Han rats) and in the sniffing activities (45.82% in Wista…

Induction of trefoil factor (TFF)1, TFF2 and TFF3 by hypoxia is mediated by hypoxia inducible factor-1: implications for gastric mucosal healing

2008

Background and purpose:  Mucosal microcirculation is compromised during gastric damage induced by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin. Consequently, oxygen supply to epithelial cells is decreased. The trefoil factor (TFF) peptides are involved in mechanisms of defence and repair in the gastrointestinal tract but their regulation at sites of gastric injury is unknown. Experimental approach:  Hypoxia and expression of TFF genes and peptides were measured in the damaged stomach of aspirin-treated rats. In a human gastric cell line (AGS cells), the effects of hypoxia and of hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)-1 (through transient transfection of HIF-1α siRNA or over-expression of …

Rubinstein–Taybi syndrome 2 with cerebellar abnormality and neural tube defect

2019

Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RSTS) is a rare dominant disorder with intellectual disability, postnatal growth deficiency, and multiple congenital anomalies. Approximately 50-70% of the patients have a mutation in the CREBBP gene (RSTS1) and 5-10% display an EP300 gene mutation (RSTS2). Craniospinal abnormalities such as microcranium, scoliosis, and lordosis are frequent findings in RSTS1, but malformations of the brain or spinal cord are seen only occasionally. Here, we report on a 3-year-old boy with facial abnormalities of RSTS, broad thumbs and halluces, developmental delay, autistic features, cerebellar underdevelopment, and a neural tube defect. Molecular diagnostic of the CREBBP and EP3…

The Fluid City Paradigm: a deeper innovation

2016

Waterfront regeneration needs to be disruptive: a paradigm shift and a deeper innovation of methods and tools must be set up in order to act in the changing times we live. In current global crisis, a true metamorphosis, the strong flows of financial, social and relational capitals that powered regeneration of urban waterfronts over the last twenty years are no longer available to be tapped in an indiscriminate manner as was the case until just a few years ago. The most dynamic cities in the future will no longer be those that are able to attract big projects and rich investors driven by the real estate market or leisure-based development, but the cities have deep socio-cultural diversity an…

The invasive seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis erodes the habitat structure and biodiversity of native algal forests in the Mediterranean Sea

2021

Abstract Invasive seaweeds are listed among the most relevant threats to marine ecosystems worldwide. Biodiversity hotspots, such as the Mediterranean Sea, are facing multiple invasions and are expected to be severely affected by the introduction of new non-native seaweeds in the near future. In this study, we evaluated the consequences of the shift from the native Ericaria brachycarpa to the invasive Asparagopsis taxiformis habitat on the shallow rocky shores of Favignana Island (Egadi Islands, MPA, Sicily, Italy). We compared algal biomass and species composition and structure of the associated epifaunal assemblages in homogenous and mixed stands of E. brachycarpa and A. taxiformis. The r…

Tailoring the Emission of Fluorinated Bipyridine-Chelated Iridium Complexes

2018

New functionalized tris(2′,6′-difluoro-2,3′-bipyridinato-N,C4′)iridium(III) ((dfpypy)3Irs) complexes, including small molecules and their dendrimer embedded analogoues, were synthesized and characterized. It is demonstrated that both the fac-(dfpypy)3Ir-based polyphenylene dendrimers and (triisopropylsilyl)ethynyl (TIPSE)-substituted (dfpypy)3Ir complexes induce large bathochromic shifts (∼50 nm) of emission bands compared with fac-(dfpypy)3Ir. This is due to the pronounced 3π–π* character of emissive excited states and the extended conjugation. A further remarkable feature is the small bathochromic shift of the emissions of fac-tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium (fac-(ppy)3Ir)-based polyphenyle…

Searching for new borondifluoride β -diketonate complexes with enhanced absorption/emission properties using ab initio tools

2018

International audience; The rational design of fluorophores with enhanced absorption/emission properties increasingly relies on theoretical chemistry, as new ab initio methods suited for electronically excited-states reduce the gap between calculated and experimental results. In this framework, Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) emerges as an attractive option as it often provides accurate results at a moderate computational cost. Here, we perform a TD-DFT-SOS-CIS(D) study of a panel of 18 borondifluoride β-diketonate complexes that can be classified as: curcuminoids, hemicurcuminoids, their ethynylene analogues, and 2′-hydroxy-chalcones. First, we reproduce the experimental …

Self and N-2 collisional broadening of far-infrared methane lines measured at the SOLEIL synchrotron

2012

International audience; Following our recent study devoted to measurements of intensities of pure rotation lines of methane, room temperature far infrared spectra of methane diluted in nitrogen at five total pressures between 100 and 800 hPa have been recorded at the AILES beamline of the SOLEIL synchrotron. One hundred and five N-2 broadening coefficients of methane pure rotation lines have been measured in the 83-261 cm(-1) spectral range using multi-spectrum non-linear least squares fitting of Voigt profiles. Pressure-induced line shifts were not needed to fit the spectra to the noise level and line mixing effects were neglected. One hundred and seventy-six self broadening coefficients h…
