Precise determination of the 1s Lamb shift in hydrogen-like lead and gold using microcalorimeters

2016

Quantum electrodynamics in very strong Coulomb fields is one scope which has not yet been tested experimentally with suffcient accuracy to really determine whether the perturbative approach is valid. One sensitive test is the determination of the 1s Lamb Shift in highly-charged very heavy ions. The 1s Lamb Shift of hydrogen-like lead (Pb81+) and gold (Au78+) has been determined using the novel detector concept of silicon microcalorimeters for the detection of hard X-rays. The results of (260 +- 22) eV for lead and (208 +- 13) eV for gold are within error bars in good agreement with theoretical predictions. For hydrogen-like lead, this represents the most accurate determination of the 1s Lam…

Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure in calcium 4snp and 4snf F Rydberg states

2000

Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure have been measured in 4snp 1 P1 and Rydberg states for all stable calcium isotopes and the radioisotope 41Ca using high-resolution laser spectroscopy. Triple-resonance excitation via Rydberg state was followed by photoionization with a CO2 laser and mass selective ion detection. Isotope shifts for the even-mass isotopes have been analyzed to derive specific mass shift and field shift factors. The apparent isotope shifts for 41Ca and 43Ca exhibit anomalous values that are n-dependent. This is interpreted in terms of hyperfine-induced fine-structure mixing, which becomes very pronounced when singlet-triplet fine-structure splitting is comparable to the h…

Off-Axis Properties of Short Gamma-Ray Bursts

2005

Based on recent models of relativistic jet formation by thermal energy deposition around black hole-torus systems, the relation between the on- and off-axis appearance of short, hard gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is discussed in terms of energetics, duration, average Lorentz factor, and probability of observation, assuming that the central engines are remnants of binary neutron star or neutron star-black hole mergers. As a consequence of the interaction with the torus matter at the jet basis and the subsequent expansion of the jets into an extremely low-density environment, the collimated ultrarelativistic outflows possess flat core profiles with only little variation of radially-averaged propert…

ChandraObservation of Cir X‐1 near the Periastron Passage: Evidence for an X‐Ray Jet?

2008

We present the results of a 25 ks long Chandra observation of the peculiar source Cir X-1 near the periastron passage. We report precise X-ray coordinates of the source, which were compatible with the optical and radio counterpart coordinates. We focus on the study of the detected emission features using the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on board the Chandra satellite. We detect emission lines associated with Mg XII, Si XIII, Si XIV, S XV, S XVI, Ar XVII, Ar XVIII, Ca XIX, Ca XX, Fe XXV, and Fe XXVI, showing an average redshift of 470 km s-1. The most intense emission features can be fitted with two lines; this is more evident for the 6.6 keV emission feature, which shows a …

SHIFT AND WIDTH OF HeII LINES

1998

Abstract Based on a quantum statistical many-particle theory, the shift and the width of some He II lines have been evaluated. Ion dynamics have been treated within the model microfield method. Furthermore, fine structure splitting has been taken into account in order to check whether this effect is the cause for the existing large discrepancies between theoretical and experimental line widths. Besides the electronic contributions to the line shift, the shift due to the inhomogeneities of the ionic microfield as well as that due to the quadratic Stark effect has been included.

Charge radii of odd-A 191–211Po isotopes

2013

Isotope shifts have been measured for the odd-A polonium isotopes 191–211Po and changes in the nuclear mean square charge radii δr2 have been deduced. The measurements were performed at CERN-ISOLDE using the in-source resonance-ionization spectroscopy technique. The combined analysis of these data and our recent results for even-A polonium isotopes indicates an onset of deformation already at 197,198Po, when going away from stability. This is significantly earlier than was suggested by previous theoretical and experimental studies of the polonium isotopes. Moreover and in contrast to the mercury isotopes, where a strong odd–even staggering of the charge radii of the ground states was observ…

XMM-Newton survey of two upper Scorpius regions

2006

We study X-ray emission from young stars by analyzing deep XMM-Newton observations of two regions of the Upper Scorpius association, having an age of 5 Myr. Based on near infrared and optical photometry we identify 22 Upper Scorpius photometric members among the 224 detected X-ray sources. We derive coronal properties of Upper Scorpius stars by performing X-ray spectral and timing analysis. The study of four strong and isolated stellar flares allows us to derive the length of the flaring loops. Among the 22 Upper Scorpius stars, 13 are identified as Upper Scorpius photometric members for the first time. The sample includes 7 weak-line T Tauri stars and 1 classical T Tauri star, while the na…

Observation of induced modulational polarization instabilities and pulse-train generation in the normal-dispersion regime of a birefringent optical f…

1998

Four-photon mixing in a low-birefringence fiber is strongly influenced by the orientation of the pump and signal waves with respect to the fiber axes. We experimentally investigated the dependence of the modulational gain spectra on pump power and polarization by mixing orthogonal pump and probe light beams in a birefringent optical fiber. With a pump on the fast fiber axis, a cascade of sidebands was generated in the regime of normal fiber dispersion. These sidebands are shown to correspond to 0.2–0.3-THz trains of pulses with complex polarization profiles. The analysis reveals that, at particular values of the input pump and probe powers and signal frequency detuning, trains of dark-solit…

Quantized separations of phase-locked soliton pairs in fiber lasers

2003

Quantized separations of phase-locked soliton pairs in fiber lasers were presented. The relation between the Kelly sidebands and the quantized separations between solitons was confirmed. Simulation results showed that the solitons can see each other at relatively larger distances than they would in the absence of radiation.
