HLA and KIR Interaction in Patients with Ischemic Stroke

2014

Background: T-cells expressing the KIR2DS2 activating receptor were found to be prevalent in the coronary culprit atherosclerotic plaque in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS), suggesting a possible cytolytic activity against the endothelium of the plaque, leading to plaque rupture and in turn to superimposed thrombosis and sudden occlusion of the artery. To explore if a similar pathogenetic mechanism occurs in acute ischemic stroke, we analyzed the possible association between the genetic KIR and HLA repertoire and the susceptibility to ischemic stroke. Methods: Fourteen patients with ischemic stroke and ten controls with atherosclerotic disease without ischemic stroke matched for…

The role of HLA-G for protection of human renal cell-carcinoma cells from immune-mediated lysis: implications for immunotherapies.

2003

HLA-G as a non-classical MHC class I molecule exhibits a limited tissue distribution and exerts multiple immune regulatory functions including the induction of immune tolerance. In addition, HLA-G has been detected in some tumors of different histology and therefore may represent a novel immune escape mechanism of tumor cells. Despite the immunogenicity of renal cell carcinoma (RCC), outgrowth of tumor cells occurs which might be attributable to abrogation of efficient anti-tumor responses. We here review the potential role of HLA-G in RCC immunology, the HLA-G expression pattern and its functional consequences on immune responses. A heterogenous constitutive and interferon- inducible HLA-G…

HLA-G and MIC expression in tumors and their role in anti-tumor immunity.

2003

Non-classical MHC class Ib molecules have attracted growing interest in recent years, especially because they interact with non-T-cell inhibitory or triggering receptors expressed on natural killer (NK) and T cells, suggesting that they have a role in immune recognition. Abnormalities in MHC class Ib expression are frequently found in human tumors of various histologies and might be associated with poor clinical outcome despite the local accumulation of immune competent cells. Available data suggest that the balance between activating and suppressing signals significantly influences the efficacy of the immune response and consequently of tumor progression.

The Descensus ad inferos in the Old English Prose Life of St Guthlac and Vercelli Homily xxiii

2014

Concetta Giliberto’s essay investigates the motif of the descensus ad inferos in the anonymous Old English version of Felix’s Vita S. Guthlaci and Vercelli Homily xxiii, two texts which have been shown to be independently derived from a now lost vernacular translation of the Latin Vita. Apart from some differences in the two texts, the account of the devilish persecution of St Guthlac culminating in the episode of the descensus ad inferos is a most revealing case study of the Anglo-Saxon appropriation of the hagiographic genre, in that one of the most classical topoi of the saints’ lives narratives, that is the struggle with demons, itself demonstrably traceable to the very foundational hag…

Combined homozygous factor H and heterozygous C2 deficiency in an Italian family

1988

Three of four children in a family have homozygous (less than 1% of normal) deficiency of factor H of the complement system and both parents, who are first cousins, are heterozygous for the same defect. The father and two of the H-deficient siblings also have a partial C2 deficiency. One of the children with combined deficiencies is affected by systemic lupus erythematosus with nephritis. No increased susceptibility to infections has been observed in the family. H deficiency is inherited in an autosomal codominant manner and is independently transmitted from C2 deficiency and HLA haplotypes. In the homozygous state it is associated with very low serum concentrations of B and C3, barely demo…

QCD and Strongly Coupled Gauge Theories: Challenges and Perspectives

2014

We dedicate this document to the memory of Mikhail Polikarpov, who passed away in July 2013. Misha worked with us for decades as a convener of the “Confinement” section of the Quark Confinement and Hadron Spectrum Series. He guided and expanded the scientific discussion of that topic, inspiring and under taking new research avenues. From its initial conception, he supported the enterprise of this document and organized Sect. 8, writing the part on confinement himself. He attracted the XIth Conference on Quark Confinement and the Hadron Spectrum to St. Petersburg (September 8-12, 2014; see http://phys.spbu.ru/confxi.html). His warm and kind personality, his high sense of humor, his ideas in …

On the zero crossing of the three-gluon vertex

2016

We report on new results on the infrared behaviour of the three-gluon vertex in quenched Quantum Chormodynamics, obtained from large-volume lattice simulations. The main focus of our study is the appearance of the characteristic infrared feature known as 'zero crossing', the origin of which is intimately connected with the nonperturbative masslessness of the Faddeev-Popov ghost. The appearance of this effect is clearly visible in one of the two kinematic configurations analyzed, and its theoretical origin is discussed in the framework of Schwinger-Dyson equations. The effective coupling in the momentum subtraction scheme that corresponds to the three-gluon vertex is constructed, revealing t…

Hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon $g-2$ from lattice QCD: semi-analytical calculation of the QED kernel

2023

Hadronic light-by-light scattering is one of the virtual processes that causes the gyromagnetic factor $g$ of the muon to deviate from the value of two predicted by Dirac's theory. This process makes one of the largest contributions to the uncertainty of the Standard Model prediction for the muon $(g-2)$. Lattice QCD allows for a first-principles approach to computing this non-perturbative effect. In order to avoid power-law finite-size artifacts generated by virtual photons in lattice simulations, we follow a coordinate-space approach involving a weighted integral over the vertices of the QCD four-point function of the electromagnetic current carried by the quarks. Here we present in detai…

Quantum walk on a cylinder

2016

We consider the 2D alternate quantum walk on a cylinder. We concentrate on the study of the motion along the open dimension, in the spirit of looking at the closed coordinate as a small or "hidden" extra dimension. If one starts from localized initial conditions on the lattice, the dynamics of the quantum walk that is obtained after tracing out the small dimension shows the contribution of several components, which can be understood from the study of the dispersion relations for this problem. In fact, these components originate from the contribution of the possible values of the quasi-momentum in the closed dimension. In the continuous space-time limit, the different components manifest as …
