Associations of Children’s Close Reading Distance and Time Spent Indoors with Myopia, Based on Parental Questionnaire
2022
Purpose: To study the association of parents’ reports about their children’s near work and outdoor habits with myopia in their children. Methods: Data from a questionnaire study conducted in 1983 among Finnish schoolchildren were reanalyzed. Vision screening had been performed for all the schoolchildren (n = 4961) in the 1st, 5th, and 8th grades (7-, 11-, and 15-year-olds) in an area of Central Finland. The questionnaire, including information about myopia, was returned by 4305 (86.7%) participants. Items concerned parents’ estimates of their child’s habitual reading distance, time spent indoors as compared with age peers, daily near work, outdoors time, and parents&…
Computer aided scheduling and routing of vehicle-carrier fleet—a case study
2016
This paper presents a case study of development of an information system for a large enterprise from vehicle-transport industry. A novel optimization model and algorithms developed to solve scheduling and routing of vehicle-carrier fleet are presented and discussed. Carried out qualitative experiments confirmed the usability of developed user-guided search paradigm and high performance of autonomous algorithmic solution search methods.
Sounding Together: Family-Centered Music Therapy as Facilitator for Parental Singing During Skin-to-Skin Contact
2017
Introduction: When it comes to the delicate relationship between a baby and its parents, the voices of the parents have a significant role in communicating love, tenderness, and closeness as well as in supporting self-regulation as necessary for secure attachment. Under suboptimal experiences, such as premature birth, infant-directed singing takes on an even more important and therapeutic role since preterm infants miss the finely attuned auditory stimulation of the womb and the mother-infant dyad is disrupted too early.
Lasten kotonaan kokeman väkivallan kohtaaminen koulussa : luokanopettajaksi opiskelevien käsityksiä opettajan toimintamahdollisuuksista ja esteistä v…
2017
Aineistona on 12 kirjoitelmaa Jyväskylän yliopiston Opettajankoulutuslaitoksen opiskelijoilta. Olen soveltanut tutkimuksessa eläytymismenetelmää. Olen pyytänyt vastaajia eläy…

Attentional modulation of interhemispheric (a)symmetry in children with developmental language disorder
2022
Funding Information: The MEG recordings were conducted at Aalto University with the support of Grant #315553 from the Academy of Finland. This research was also supported by a personal grant to DH from the Jenni and Antti Wihuri Foundation and to RS from the Sigrid Jusélius Foundation. Publisher Copyright: © 2022, The Author(s). The nature of auditory processing problems in children with developmental language disorder (DLD) is still poorly understood. Much research has been devoted to determining the extent to which DLD is associated with general auditory versus language-specific dysfunction. However, less emphasis has been given to the role of different task conditions in these dysfunctio…

Mobilizing ‘context’: Vocabulary checks in ESL tutoring sessions
2022
This study investigates the practice of unplanned and emergent vocabulary checks, i.e. turns through which a speaker explicitly checks whether the recipient knows a word, in small-group tutorial instruction. The data are video-recorded English as a second language (ESL) tutoring sessions between a native English speaker tutor and ESL students at an urban community college in the United States. By drawing on conversation analysis, we analyze how vocabulary checks emerge sequentially and with the help of contextual interactional resources. Findings suggest that vocabulary checks constitute a practice for managing both shared understanding and pedagogical concerns. By singling out a vocabulary…
