Towards cultural transformation : Culture as planetary well-being
2024
Culture covers myriad aspects of human life. Most often it is understood as intellectual or artistic practices, but in a broader view, culture covers the habits, lifestyles, traditions, beliefs, values, and worldviews that shape human lives and societies. Culture also undergoes continuous change and is affected by human actions. Current ecological and well-being crises caused by destructive cultural practices and actions pose an existential risk to both humans and nonhumans. This chapter argues that when challenging, preventing, and changing such destructive human practices and actions, the role of culture is indispensable. Building on and rethinking cultural sustainability, the chapter out…
A landscape approach to planetary well-being
2024
“Landscape” refers to a perceivable spatial level shaped by socio-ecological interactions and represents the systems where people live. Human societies have globally transformed landscapes to meet their needs, e.g., nutrition or shelter, according to cultural preferences. This human domination of land has resulted in considerable competition for space with other lifeforms, driving biodiversity loss through land-use change and intensification, as well as coming into conflict with planetary well-being. Recent research has highlighted the relevance of the landscape level when articulating human activities with and in their environment and maintaining human and nonhuman cohabitation. Indeed, th…
"Toivon tiestä tulee tie helvettiin" : Välimeren paperittomat siirtolaiset kiistakysymyksenä Italian politiikassa
2016
Tämä pro gradu -tutkielma käsittelee Välimeren paperittomia siirtolaisia Italian politiikassa vuosina 2002–2011. Tutkimuksen teoreettisena lähtökohtana on Italian senaatin täysistunnoissa käytävien keskustelujen retorinen analyysi, jonka muodostamisessa hyödynnän erityisesti Chaïm Perelmanin argumentaatioanalyysia sekä diskurssitutkija Teun A. van Dijkin näkemyksiä käytetyimmistä topoksista siirtolaisaiheisissa parlamenttidebateissa. Topos-retorinen luenta helpottaa käytetyimpien argumenttien jäsentelyä. Senaatissa käytyjen keskustelujen kronologinen tarkastelu mahdollistaa niiden kytkemisen laajempaan kontekstiinsa. Merkittävät kontekstit käytetylle kielelle ovat ajanjakson aikana yhä tiuk…
Citizenship, populism and social work in the Finnish welfare state
2020
This chapter ties together discussions of citizenship and social work practice in the context of growing populist and neoliberal political trends in Finland. These political trends are manifested in populist right-wing nationalist movements on the one hand, and in the neoliberal dismantling of the welfare state on the other. Both political trends – right-wing nationalist populism and neoliberalism – tend to separate people into two groups: those who are ‘deserving’ and those who are ‘undeserving’. Simultaneously, the dynamics of globalisation have radically changed nation states and their traditional concepts of citizenship and related social rights. There is thus a need to redefine the und…

Humanity and Its Beneficiaries : Footing and Stance-Taking in an International Criminal Trial
2019
This article elucidates the role of metapragmatic devices like footing and stance-taking in trial hearings before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. It focuses on the case of Ahmad al Faqi al Mahdi, a Malian Islamist found guilty of the 2012 destruction of cultural heritage in Timbuktu. We examine how the prosecution and defense reflexively formulate the hearing as part of a wider text trajectory and how they align personae across participation frameworks by locating the current courtroom event into a wider dialogical field. A careful inspection of these metapragmatic devices reveals how trial participants navigate the multiple tensions facing this emergent, amalgamated fo…
Adaptive Methodology for Designing a Predictive Model of Cardiac Arrhythmia Symptoms Based on Cubic Neural Unit
2017
A cubic neural unit is a kind of a higher-order neural unit which can be used for prediction tasks among others, in the medical field. The example of the tasks includes monitoring cardiac behavior in real-time either for preemptive treatment, or for supporting a doctor to reach a more accurate diagnosis. We propose a predictive model which has been developed as an application in open source code with the aim to make it publicly accessible for research community and medical professionals and also to decrease the implementation cost. The proposed model uses sample-by-sample adaptation of the gradient descent method with error backpropagation. This paper presents an application of a cubic neur…

CRM -käyttöönotossa huomioitavat tekijät
2010
Korhonen, Jussi Tapani Tietojärjestelmätieteen kandidaatintutkielma / Jussi Korhonen Jyväskylä: Jyväskylän yliopisto, 2010. 40 s. Kandidaatintutkielma Tutkielmassa selvitetään kirjallisuuskatsauksen kautta tekijöitä, jotka vaikuttavat CRM:n käyttöönotossa onnistumiseen. Tutkielmassa esitellään CRM:n määritelmä, kartoitetaan CRM-järjestelmää sekä sen osia, selvitetään miksi CRM:ää tulisi tarkastella strategisesta näkökulmasta sekä havainnollistetaan hyötyjä joita CRM:llä on mahdollista saavuttaa. Tämän jälkeen tuodaan esille kirjallisuudessa esitettyjä tekijöitä, joiden on havaittu olevan syynä CRM:n surullisenkin kuuluisaan onnistumistodennäköisyyteen. Näiden havaintojen pohjalta esitellään…
An Analysis of the Flow-Based Fast Handover Method For Mobile IPv6 Network
2006
Mobile IPv6 has been proposed by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) to be the solution to mobility management in IPv6 network. The work is now culminating to a standard status. But, one problem still remaining is the length of the handover time, which might cause packet loss. Thus the handover time should be as short as possible. Especially the real-time traffic suffers from packet loss. Earlier we have introduced a new method for faster handover process in Mobile IPv6 network called the Flow-based Fast Handover Method for Mobile IPv6 (FFHMIPv6). FFHMIPv6 uses the flow state information stored in the routers for the fast redirection of the flow. In this paper we compare the proposed…
