First Report of Armillaria Butt Rot Caused by Armillaria mellea on Phoenix canariensis in Italy.

During 2006, in a garden in the Mount Etna Piedmont, eastern Sicily (Italy), a 40-year-old specimen of Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis hort. ex Chabaud) with a trunk circumference at breast height of 220 cm showed a rotted lesion with a viscous, brown ooze at the stem base and root initials. The lesion extended to approximately one-third of the trunk circumference. Trunk excavation exposed a wet rot of internal tissues, a cream-colored mycelial mat, and a mushroom-like smell. Although the rot spread inward (approximately 25 cm deep) with decay of nonlignified ground tissues and blackening of wood fibers, the palm did not show symptoms on the canopy. Carbazole (1a) and 4-methoxycarbazole (1b) can be regioselectively functionalized by reaction with triethyl orthoformate. Whereas the reaction of 1a with the ortho ester furnishes the amide acetal 2, the new carbazole derivatives 4–10 are formed, depending on the reaction conditions, in the electrophilic substitution of 1b. The products of this reaction sequence provide a contribution to studies on the mechanism of the transformation of 1b to tris-carbazolylmethane 5. Compound 5 represents a new, three-bladed propeller in the triheteroarylmethane series.

Abstract. Global change forces ecosystems to adapt to elevated atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2). We understand that carbonyl sulfide (COS), a trace gas which is involved in building up the stratospheric sulfate aerosol layer, is taken up by vegetation with the same triad of the enzymes which are metabolizing CO2, i.e. ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEP-Co) and carbonic anhydrase (CA). Abstract The effect of changes in cellular energy state on 6[14C]glucose uptake and activity of the phosphoenolpyruvate:glucose phosphotransferase system (PTS) in Brevibacterium flavum RC 115 cells was investigated. Energy generation in cells was varied by adding an inhibitor of cellular respiration (potassium cyanide) and an uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation (pentachlorophenol) to the cell culture as well as by changing thiamine concentration in the bacterial growth medium. Abstract From stems of Phoenix dactylifera trans-3,5,3′,5′-tetrahydroxy-4-methoxystilbene has been isolated as a major component; cis-3,5,3′,5′-tetrahydroxy-4-methoxystilbene and trans-3,5,4′-trihydroxystilbene were isolated as minor components. Other metabolites from the biogenetic route to these stilbenes were also characterized.

Battered child syndrome: cerebral ultrasound and CT findings after vigorous shaking.

Child abuse by whiplash-shaking can lead to severe cerebral damage, neurological defects and mental retardation. Cerebral damage has been found with and without external evidence of head injury. We report the sonographic findings in two children after traumatization due to repetitive vigorous whiplash shaking. Cerebral sonography revealed cerebral edema at admission or within 48 hours thereafter. Follow-up studies demonstrated development of marked brain atrophy in both cases. The sonographic findings were confirmed by cranial computerized tomography. Doppler sonography was used to monitor cerebral perfusion by measuring intracranial blood flow. Abstract: To better understand the potential uses of vegetation indices based on the sun-induced upward and downward chlorophyll fluorescence at leaf and at canopy scales, a field study was carried out in the city of Valencia (Spain). Fluorescence yield (FY) indices were derived for trees at different traffic intensity locations and at three canopy heights. This allowed investigating within-tree and between-tree variations of FY indices for four tree species.
