Influence of K on the transport of Cs-137 in soil–plant root and root-leaf systems in sugar beet
2015
The main aim of this study was to determine the influence of K-40 activity in the soil on the transport of Cs-137 from the soil to plants and the impact of its activity on the internal transport of Cs-137 between anatomical parts of the sugar beet. The activity concentration of Cs-137 in the soil was bigger than that in the beet. The highest activity concentration of K-40 was observed in beet leaves, while its content in roots and the soil were comparable.
Pulsed Electric Field Processing Optimization of Ascorbic Acid in a Mango and Papaya Beverage Sweetened with Stevia Rebaudiana
2016
During the processing of liquid foods, ascorbic acid may be altered, thus reducing beneficial health effects. For this reason, the degradation kinetics of ascorbic acid were determined in a fruit juice mixture (papaya and mango) sweetened with Stevia rebaudiana (SR) infusion after treatment by pulsed electric field (PEF) processing. The variable ranges were 20-40 kV/cm (electric field strength, E) during 100-360 μs (time treatment, t). The degradation equation was AA (mg/100 mL) = 26.842 - 0.101·E - 0.003·t- 10.371·%Stevia + 2.865·%Stevia2, demonstrating the use of PEF as an alternative to pasteurization treatments. However, results show the need to optimize treatment conditions whenever th…

Die Wirkung unterschiedlicher Lichtintensitäten während der Anzucht auf die CO2-Kompensationslage, die Glykolsäure-Oxidase- und Ribulosebiphosphat-Ca…
1978
Summary Sinapis alba (white mustard) plants were grown under conditions of strong (100 W · m -2 ) and weak (3 W · m -2 ) light and the effect of the light intensity during growth on the CO 2 -compensation point and the activities of glycolic acid oxidase and ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase were studied. The CO 2 -compensation concentration was determined according to two methods: firstly in a closed system with an infrared CO 2 -analyzer, and secondly according to the curve of net photosynthesis as a function of C0 2 -concentration over the range of 400 vpm CO 2 to the CO 2 -compensation point (Fig. 4). The intensity of light during growth was observed to exert an unmistakable effect on t…

Effects of 1-methylcyclopropene on postharvest quality of white- and yellow-flesh loquat (Eriobotrya japonicaLindl.) fruit
2014
Introduction. The effects of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) were evaluated on white-flesh cv. Claudia and yellow-flesh cv. Nespolone di Trabia loquat fruit. Materials and methods. Application of 1-MCP ((0.5 to 1) µL⋅L -1 for 20 h)) was monitored at 20 °C (7 days) and 0 °C (7 days at 0 °C and then 7 days at 20 °C). Results. Treatments with 1-MCP slowed fruit softening, depending on the concentration. Softening inhibition was greatest in fruit treated and held at 20 °C. The optimum concentration for softening inhibition at 20 °C was 1µ L ⋅L -1 of 1-MCP, while 0.5 µL⋅L -1 of 1-MCP was more effective at 0 °C. Conclusion. Treatments with 1-MCP inhibited titratable acidity loss in both cultivars. 1…
Organic and chemical n fertilization on coriander (coriandrum sativum L.) in a Mediterranean environment
2014
Abstract Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is an annual herbaceous Medicinal and Aromatic Plant (MAP) dealing with a great industrial interest because of its strongly-scented fruits (“seeds”). The role of N fertilization in coriander seed yield is matter of debate as far; information is missing, for instance, about the effects of organic N fertilization, a mandatory technique when the organic cropping management is chosen. Organic and chemical N fertilizers have been supplied on coriander from 2001–2002 to 2006–2007 in a Mediterranean semi-arid environment, and their effects on the formation of biomass and seeds yield have been evaluated. Different organic fertilizers, allowed by EU regulat…
Economic assessment of sicilian loquat orchards
2015
The majority of Italian production of loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) derives from the Palermo province, along the northern Sicilian coast. However, this area is characterized by family orchards, traditional cultural techniques, and inadequate commercial organization. These appear to affect negatively the production costs and reduce the farmersâ income, decreasing the competitiveness of Sicilian loquat orchards. This study evaluates the economic viability of Sicilian loquat orchards by means of cost-benefit analysis (CBA). In particular, for the investment assessment some financial indicators have been calculated such as net present value (NPV), discounted payback time (DPBT), and internal r…
Free and bound hydroxyl and carboxyl groups in the cutin of Quercus suber leaves
1984
Abstract The number of free and bound hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of the cutin of Quercus suber leaves was investigated by the lithium borohydride hydrogenolysis of mesyl-cutin compared with the lithium borohydride hydrogenolysis of untreated cutin. Fifty per cent of the vic -diol groups of the trihydroxy C 18 acid component and twenty five per cent of the secondary hydroxyl groups of the dihydroxy C 16 acid component are free. The rest of the secondary and all of the primary hydroxyl groups are esterified; all carboxyl groups are esterified.
