The Influence of Brassinosteroid, a Growth-promoting Steroidal Lactone, on Development and CO2-fixation Capacity of Intact Wheat and Mustard Seedlings

In 1970, Mitchell et al. isolated a lipoidal complex from the pollen of rape (Brassica napus L.). This complex, called “Brassins” was found to have partly powerful growth-promoting properties. The novel growth response of young bean plants in the second internode assay (Worley, Mitchell 1971; Mitchell, Gregory 1972) and other physiological changes following Brassin-treatment have been studied under several aspects (Krizek, Worley 1981; Gregory 1981).

High speed X-ray analysis of plant enzymes at room temperature.

X-ray measurements at room temperature (295 K) deliver high quality data sets with unprecedented speed (2 min), as shown for crystallized raucaffricine-O-β-D-glucosidase (RG), its mutant RG-Glu186Gln and several ligand complexes of the enzyme which participates in alkaloid biosynthesis in the plant Rauvolfia. The data obtained are compared with data sets measured under typical cryo conditions (100K). Under both conditions, density maps are highly comparable and favor the described protocol for room temperature measurements, potentially paving the way for future crystallographic studies capturing biosynthetic pathway intermediates.

Fatty acid composition of mutants of the moss Physcomitrella patens

Abstract The fatty acid composition of various mutant strains of the moss Physcomitrella patens has been compared to the wild-type. These included strains defective in their responses to auxins and/or cytokinins, one which releases much more cytokinin into the medium than the wild-type, and two aphototropic strains. The lipids of the aphototropic mutants were also studied after culture in different light regimes. Although some differences in fatty acid composition have been found between strains, these alone are probably not responsible for their physiological differences. Many of the recently detected phytochemicals exhibit remarkable bioactivities, ranging from anticancer activity, phosphodiesterase inhibition to cytotoxicity against HIV-infected cells.
