Orthostatic Hypotension and Complications

2020

Orthostatic hypotension prevalence exponentially increases with age, and an early detection of it can prevent the severe complications it may lead to. Among those, we mention (orthostatic) syncope and falls, cardiovascular diseases, and neurological diseases. Increased blood pressure variability related to standing which can provoke brain hypoperfusion and ischemia, higher arterial stiffness, and activated systematic inflammation, which have both been strongly involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, finally leading to CVD.

Dual channel photoplethysmography studies of cardio-vascular response to the body position changes

2005

The dual-channel photoplethysmography studies of physiological responses during 3-stage orthostatic test were performed. Clear differences in heartbeat rate, pulse wave transit time and blood pressure variations of healthy volunteers and diabetic patients have been observed.

A Single-Arm, Open-Label Phase 1 Study of Itacitinib (ITA) with Calcineurin Inhibitor (CNI)-Based Interventions for Prophylaxis of Graft-Versus-Host …

2020

Background Despite prophylaxis, GVHD remains a significant cause of morbidity and nonrelapse mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). ITA is a potent, selective Janus kinase (JAK) 1 inhibitor that has been combined safely with steroids in patients (pts) with acute GVHD. We describe results from a proof-of-concept study evaluating ITA + CNI-based regimens for GVHD prophylaxis. Study Design and Methods GRAVITAS-119 (NCT03320642) was a single-arm, open-label study enrolling pts aged ≥18 y undergoing allogeneic HCT using peripheral blood stem cells from 8/8 or 7/8 matched related or unrelated donors for a hematologic malignancy. Eligible pts were candidates for reduc…

Follow Up On CD8-Depleted Donor-Lymphocyte Infusions After T-Cell Depleted Allogeneic Hemopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

2013

We applied prophylactic CD8-depleted (CD8depl) donor lymphocyte infusions (DLI) in the setting of T-cell depleted reduced-intensity allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in a phase I/II trial. T-cell depletion was carried out by the use of high-dose Alemtuzumab (100 mg or 60 mg for unrelated or sibling donor transplantation, respectively). We have demonstrated the feasibility of this approach after having treated 23 patients in this protocol (Meyer et al. Blood 2007). From 2004 to 2011, 134 patients with different hematologic diseases were included and followed for a median observation time of 1.5 years after transplantation (range, 1.5-9 years). Median age was 56 years …

Biomarkers in Community-Acquired Pneumonia (Cardiac and Non-Cardiac)

2020

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) remains the first cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide due to infection. Several aspects such as severity and host response are related to its clinical course and outcome. Beyond the acute implications that the infection provokes in the host, pneumonia also has long-term negative consequences. Among them, cardiovascular complications and mortality are the most outstanding. Therefore, an adequate recognition and stratification of the risk of complications and mortality is crucial. Many biomarkers have been studied for these reasons, considering that each biomarker mirrors a different aspect. Moreover, the clinical application of many of them is still …

Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation for Acquired Aplastic Anemia: Better Outcome with Bone Marrow as Compared to Peripheral Blood in HLA-Matched Sib…

2009

Abstract Abstract 876 Background: Transplantation of bone marrow (BM) from a HLA-matched sibling donor is an effective treatment for severe aplastic anemia (AA) with long-term survival in excess of 80%. In the recent years there were two trends in allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) for AA: (1) increasing proportion of transplants performed from matched unrelated donors (MUD) and (2) increasing proportion of transplants using peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBSC) as stem cell source instead of BM. A similar switch to PBSC over BM grafts is reported in leukemia transplants. PBSC grafts for leukemia are associated with higher rates of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). This …

Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for T Cell Lymphomas: Improved Results Overtime

2019

INTRODUCTION: Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT) is the only curative strategy for relapsed/refractory T cell lymphoma (T-NHL). In the past ten years, there have been several improvements in conditioning regimens and graft versus host disease prophylaxis (GVHD), which have contributed to lower transplant-related mortality (TRM). Also, selective and low toxicity therapies, might improve response quality in some T-NHL Recently, haploidentical stem cell transplantation (Haplo) with post-transplant cyclophosphamide is a new option for those patients who do not have an HLA-identical sibling or a suitable unrelated donor, but also it has shortened the time for urgent cas…

Eye fluke-induced cataract formation in fish: quantitative analysis using an ophthalmological microscope

2004

We examined the parasite-induced cataract formation in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) using slit-lamp microscopy to determine the relationship between cataract intensity and number of Diplostomum spathaceum parasites that were established in the lens. Cataract intensity increased significantly with parasite burden, but was also affected by the pattern of exposure to the parasite cercariae. The slit-lamp methodology proved useful in scoring the cataracts since it provides a 3-dimensional view into the lens and gives an actual picture of the location and intensity of the cataracts, which allows detailed investigations of mechanisms underlying cataract formation in various fish species. P…

Listado de síntomas breve (short checklist of symptoms) in Argentinean adults: Psychometric study of its main clinical scales

2016

The main objective of this research was studying the psychometric properties of the Listado de síntomas breve (short checklist of symptoms; LSB-50) in a sample of 994 Argentinean adults (49.9% females; 50.1% males). Mean age was 40.66 years (standard deviation=17.01; Min=18; Max=89). This screening test has seven main clinical scales: hypersensitivity, obsessive-compulsive, anxiety, hostility, somatization, depression, and sleep disturbance. Pearson correlations indicated that all scales had positive and mostly moderate associations. The second order confirmatory factor analysis showed a good fit for a hierarchical model where all scales loaded in one major factor. Internal consistency by C…
