Multiscale processes to describe the Eastern Sicily Seismic Sequences
2018
In this paper, a version of hybrid of Gibbs point process models is proposed as method to characterise the multiscale interaction structure of several seismic sequences occurred in the Eastern Sicily in the last decade. Seismic sequences were identified by a clustering technique based on space-time distance criterion and hierarchical clustering. We focus our analysis on five small seismic sequences, showing that two of these are described by an inhomogeneous Poisson process (not significant interaction among events) while the other three clusters are described by a hybrid-Geyer process (mutiscale interaction between events). The proposed method, although it still needs extensive testing on …
Local Spatio-Temporal Log-Gaussian Cox Processes for seismic data analysis
2022
We propose a local version of the spatio-temporal log-Gaussian Cox processes (LGCPs) employing the Local Indicators of Spatio-Temporal Association (LISTA) functions into the minimum contrast procedure to obtain space as well as time-varying parameters. We resort to the joint minimum contrast method fitting method to estimate the set of second-order parameters for the class of Spatio-Temporal LGCPs. We employ the proposed methodology to analyse real seismic data occurred Greece between 2004 and 2015.
Contribution of the Economic Crisis to the Risk Increase of Poor Mental Health in a Region of Spain
2018
Previous research suggests that the economic crisis can affect mental health. The purpose of this study was to analyse the association of risk of poor mental health with various socioeconomic, demographic, health, quality of life, and social support variables
Interventions to improve health and care of women with low health literacy : a systematic review
2020
Abstract: Background: Limited or low health literacy (HL) has been associated with poor health outcomes, including inadequate self-caring and preventive behaviors. A few studies have systematically summarized the effect of interventions to improve reproductive health and care in women with insufficient HL. The main objective of the study was to investigate health care promotion interventions and examine their effectiveness on women with inadequate HL through a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCT). Methods: RCTs and quasi-experimental studies that assessed HL interventions to improve reproductive health of women with low HL were included. The study protocol was registered …
Seismic response of braced frames with and without friction dampers
1995
Abstract The dynamic response of friction damped bracing systems and ordinary cross-bracing systems inserted into surrounding frames without lateral stiffness is analysed in order to compare the typical behaviour of the two different bracing systems. The cyclic force-displacement relationship in the two cases is accurately modelled on the basis of experimental and related numerical models which are available in the literature, and the structural dimensionless parameters defining the shapes of the cycles are stressed. Systems having the same average period of vibration in the elastic phase of the response are assumed to be comparable with one another, which leads to a relationship linking th…
Allocation of actuators and sensors for coupled-adjacent-building vibration attenuation
2013
An actuator and sensor allocation approach is proposed for the design of coupled-adjacent-building vibration suppression under seismic excitation. This paper first establishes a full-order model of adjacent buildings with the location information of actuators and sensors. Then, the order of the model is reduced via modal cost analysis, by retaining the modes contributing the most. In view of the fact that the output powers of the actuators are limited, this paper brings forward a mixed H∞/GH2 control. By considering that not all the states of the system can be measured by the sensors, a dynamic output feedback controller is designed. The genetic algorithm is employed to obtain the locations…
Experimental validation of a direct pre-design formula for TLCD
2014
The passive control of vibrations has received in recent years a great deal of attention from researchers. Several types of devices have been proposed in order to reduce the dynamic responses of different kinds of structural systems. Among them, the Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) has proved to be very effective in reducing vibration of structures. However, since the equations governing the TLCD controlled systems response is nonlinear, the calibration of TLCD parameters is time consuming and not convenient to perform in a pre-design phase. In this context, it has recently been introduced by the authors a formula that allows to choose the optimal parameters of TLCD in a direct and fast wa…
The use of wood with an anti-seismic function in the architecture of palermo during the 18th century
2016
The study analyzes the interventions in the historical buildings after the earthquakes that struck Palermo in 1726 and 1751, with a particular attention to the anti-seismic reinforcements. The research, based primarily on archival documents, focuses on a series of interventions in the architectural heritage, in which the use of wood for structural elements, was able to guarantee for an “antiseismic” reconstruction. Although wood was not commonly used as other materials (iron, for instance) in the post-earthquake reconstruction process of Palermo it was certified its use as an anti-seismic system in the reinforcements of the damaged buildings. It is documented, for instance, the insertion of…
The Bell-Tower Facade: An Aseismic Device in Sicily Between the 12th and 18th Centuries
2014
Imposing tower facades with belfries in the last order were built in Sicily Italy, from the Middle Ages to the late Baroque period. Until the 16th century, this model, which was inspired by northern European examples, also had a parallelepiped forepart leaning against the facade, working as containment for the pressure imparted by the inner longitudinal arches on the front, and amplified in case of earthquakes. The lacking static efficiency of these early structures is demonstrated by collapses during the strong earthquakes that hit the island in the modern age. Despite numerous cases of destruction, the memory of some prototypes survived in Sicilian constructive memory through the elaborat…
Dynamic identification of a reinforced concrete frame in progressive states of damage
2006
Two, full size, reinforced concrete frames were put on a shaking table and underwent seismic excitations with increasing intensities. The aim of the reported experiment was to study changes in their dynamic, modal parameters due to development of cracks in concrete. Dynamic identification of these frames was carried out through diagnostic tests interlaced with the damaging excitations. This paper presents the results of their identification in various states of damage, using low level non-destructive damage estimation methods. A characteristic decrease of natural frequencies and an increase of structural damping was observed. The drop of the natural frequency was fastest for the 1st mode an…
