The neuronal efflux of noradrenaline: Dependency on sodium and facilitation by ouabain
1974
Rabbit hearts were isolated after pretreatment with the MAO inhibitor pargyline and with reserpine and were perfused with 200 ng/ml noradrenaline for 1 h. During the subsequent wash-out with an amine-free solution for 2 h, the neuronal efflux of noradrenaline declined mono-exponentially with a mean halftime of 42 min. Both Na+-free solution and ouabain caused facilitation of the efflux which thereafter declined in a multi-exponential fashion. The maximum facilitation was reached after 3 min of Na+-free perfusion and 25 min after introduction of ouabain. The amount of exogenous noradrenaline accumulated in the heart was only partially released when the extracellular Na+-concentration was nor…
New approaches in the treatment of Adamantiades-Behçet's disease.
2005
Purpose of review To update clinicians on the recent advances in the treatment of Adamantiades-Behcet's disease. Recent findings Interferon-α-2a and infliximab have proved able to induce prompt remission in the vast majority of Adamantiades-Behcet's patients with DMARD-resistant uveoretinitis. Efficacy of interferon-α-2a has also been reported for mucocutaneous lesions, arthritis, and (more anecdotally) for neuro-Behcet, while results from small case series suggest that infliximab is beneficial for mucocutaneous lesions and (more anecdotally) for arthritis and gastro-intestinal manifestations. Two cases of neuro-Behcet treated with infliximab showed a complete resolution. Finally, in a rand…
Epidemiological, Clinical and Morphological Characteristics of Immunoglobulin a Nephropathy in Latvia
2020
Abstract Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common chronic glomerulopathy with variable clinical manifestations. IgAN diagnostics became possible in Latvia in 2013. The study aim was to describe IgAN manifestations in the Latvian population by analysing epidemiological, clinical, histological data, and reveal factors that might determine the course of the disease. The retrospective, one-centre study included biopsy-proven IgAN patients over a five-year period in the Nephrology Centre at Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital. Data from inpatient and outpatient medical records were collected. The study included 69 patients with histologically confirmed IgAN (23% of all rena…
Canakinumab in systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis: real-world data from a retrospective Italian cohort
2021
Abstract Objective The objective of this study was to use real-world data to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of canakinumab in Italian patients with systemic JIA (sJIA). Methods A retrospective multicentre study of children with sJIA was performed. Clinical features, laboratory parameters and adverse events were collected at baseline, and 6 and 12 months after starting canakinumab. The primary outcome measure of effectiveness was clinically inactive disease (CID) off glucocorticoids (GCs) treatment at 6 months. Results A total of 80 children from 15 Italian centres were analysed. Of the 12 patients who started canakinumab in CID while receiving anakinra, all maintained CID. Of the 68 …
Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and Still’s Disease
1975
In the Anglo-American literature, the term “Still’s disease”, based on the observations of ○Cornil (1864) and Still (1897) is generally employed to cover the juvenile forms of rheumatoid arthritis, defined by Ansell and Bywaters (1959). German paediatricians, on the other hand, particularly Storber and Kolle, regard Still’s disease as a separate syndrome. Kolle uses the following characteristics for this distinction: 1. High fever at the commencement of illness. 2. Enlargement of lymph nodes, spleen and liver. 3. Myocarditis and pericarditis. 4. High leucocyte count. 5. Erythema multiforme in about 70% of patients.
Topodiagnostik ischämisch bedingter Dysarthrophonien
2000
In einer prospektiven Studie untersuchetn wir 106 konsekutiv eingeschlossene Patienten mit apoplektiform auftretender Dysarthrophonie aufgrund eines im MRT gesicherten singluaren, nicht raumfordernden Infarkts.
Beta-adrenoceptor stimulation enhances transmitter output from the rat phrenic nerve.
1988
Abstract 1. Neurally-evoked output of newly synthesized [3H]-acetylcholine from the rat phrenic nerve was measured in the absence of cholinesterase inhibitors. 2. Noradrenaline and isoprenaline enhanced neurally-evoked transmitter output markedly. Moreover, immediately after the application of noradrenaline the basal tritium efflux increased significantly. 3. Pretreatment with propranolol (0.1 mumol l-1) or atenolol (0.3 mumol l-1) completely prevented the stimulatory effect of noradrenaline and isoprenaline on evoked transmitter output. 4. The facilitatory effect of isoprenaline declined, when the exposure time was increased. This observation supports the assumption that beta-adrenoceptors…
Presence of muscarinic inhibitory and absence of nicotinic excitatory receptors at the terminal sympathetic nerves of chicken hearts.
1976
Nicotine (2 X 10(-4) M) or acetylcholine (5.5 X 10(-4) M) in the presence of 3 X 10(-6) M atropine did not increase the rate or amplitude of contraction in isolated atria or ventricular strips of the chicken heart; both drugs also did not cause an output of noradrenaline or adrenaline and did not evoke antidromic discharges in the right sympathetic nerves of isolated perfused chicken hearts. In contrast, "high K+-solutions" evoked an output of noradrenaline and adrenaline and caused a burst of antidromic discharges. Dimethylphenylpiperazine (DMPP; 3.1 X 10(-4) M), by a tyramine-like action, elicited a small output of noradrenaline and increased rate and amplitude of contraction" but did not…
Effect of cocaine and related drugs on the uptake of noradrenaline by heart and spleen
1961
Noradrenaline uptake by heart and spleen after intravenous infusion of noradrenaline was measured in the pithed rat. Cocaine, given before the infusion, inhibited the noradrenaline uptake in relation (a) to the dose administered and (b) to the amount of noradrenaline infused. There was an association between increase in the pressor response to a test dose of noradrenaline and inhibition of the uptake by the heart. Drugs related chemically to cocaine, such as alpha-cocaine, amethocaine, and atropine, did not alter the noradrenaline uptake or potentiate the blood pressure response to noradrenaline. The noradrenaline uptake by the heart was unchanged after dibenamine, but blocked by the dichlo…
Process-Optimized Minimally Invasive Total Hip Replacement via a Direct Anterior Approach with Navigation Control of Leg Length and Offset
2013
The purpose of this study was to analyze a new concept of using the minimally invasive direct anterior approach (DAA) in total hip replacement (THR) in combination with a leg positioner (Rotex-Table) and a modified retractor system (Condor). To control leg length and offset, the navigation system OrthoPilot® (B. Braun, Aesculap) or the Medacta system was used. We retrospectively evaluated the first 100 primary THRs performed with this new concept between 2009 and 2010, regarding the surgical data as well as the radiological and clinical outcome (Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome score, HOOS). All surgeries were perfomed following a standardized operation technique including navigati…
