Erythritol-enriched powder and oral biofilm regrowth on dental implants: an in vitro study.

2021

Background Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis are the main biological complications associated with dental implants. Since most authors agree that bacteria play a major etiological role, the main aims of this study were to determine if a formulation of erythritol and chlorhexidine applied with an air polishing system inhibits biofilm regrowth over dental implants and to compare the decontamination capacity of this therapy with that of mechanical removal by saline and gauze. Material and Methods A multispecies biofilm (P. gingivalis, A. actinomycetemcomitans, F. nucleatum, A. naeslundii, V. parvula and S. oralis) was grown for 14 days on 52 dental implants in an artificial mouth. Th…

Effects of Th1 and Th2 cytokines on cytokine production and ICAM-1 expression on synovial fibroblasts

1995

OBJECTIVES--To investigate the influence of the Th1 and Th2 lymphokines interleukins (IL)-4 and IL-13, interferon gamma (IFN gamma), and several monokines on the adhesion of mononuclear cells to synovial fibroblasts and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) expression and cytokine production of synovial fibroblasts in patients with osteoarthritis. METHODS--Synovial fibroblasts were isolated from patients with osteoarthritis and stimulated with IL-1 beta, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, IL-13, tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha), and IFN gamma. Subsequently, we determined the production of IL-1 alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, IFN alpha and TNF alpha, and the expression of ICAM-1 ly…

Interferon-beta: a therapeutic for autoimmune lupus in MRL-Faslpr mice.

2005

Type I interferons are associated with lupus. Genes that are regulated by IFN-alpha are upregulated in pediatric lupus patients. Gene deletion of the IFN-alpha/beta receptor in experimental lupus-like NZB mice results in reduced disease activity. Conversely, IFN-beta is a well-established treatment in multiple sclerosis, another autoimmune disease. For determining whether IFN-beta treatment is harmful or beneficial in lupus, MRL-Fas(lpr) mice were injected with this type I IFN. Treatment was initiated in MRL-Fas(lpr) mice with mild and advanced disease. IFN-beta was highly effective in prolonging survival and ameliorating the clinical (renal function, proteinuria, splenomegaly, and skin les…

Dendritic Cell-Specific Deletion of β-Catenin Results in Fewer Regulatory T-Cells without Exacerbating Autoimmune Collagen-Induced Arthritis.

2015

Dendritic cells (DCs) are professional antigen presenting cells that have the dual ability to stimulate immunity and maintain tolerance. However, the signalling pathways mediating tolerogenic DC function in vivo remain largely unknown. The beta-catenin pathway has been suggested to promote a regulatory DC phenotype. The aim of this study was to unravel the role of beta-catenin signalling to control DC function in the autoimmune collagen-induced arthritis model (CIA). Deletion of beta-catenin specifically in DCs was achieved by crossing conditional knockout mice with a CD11c-Cre transgenic mouse line. Bone marrow-derived DCs (BMDCs) were generated and used to study the maturation profile of …

Characterization of the Adjuvant Effect of IL-12 and Efficacy of IL-12 Inhibitors in Type II Collagen-Induced Arthritis

1996

A destructive joint disease can be induced in susceptible DBA/1 mice by immunization with type II collagen emulsified with oil and either killed Mycobacterium tuberculosis or IL-12 as adjuvant. Cellular and humoral anti-collagen immune mechanisms appear to be involved in the pathogenesis of arthritis. We have characterized the adjuvant effect or IL-12 in more detail and addressed the question whether mycobacteria might act via the induction of endogenous IL-12. Injections of IL-12 into collagen-immunized DBA/1 mice promoted the development of IFN-gamma-producing CD4+ T cells and strongly upregulated the production of complement-fixing IgG2a and IgG2b antibodies resulting in severe arthritis…

Microbiome: pro-inflammatory Prevotella?

2013

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a prevalent systemic autoimmune disease, caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Animal models suggest a role for intestinal bacteria in supporting the systemic immune response required for joint inflammation. Here we performed 16S sequencing on 114 stool samples from rheumatoid arthritis patients and controls, and shotgun sequencing on a subset of 44 such samples. We identified the presence of Prevotella copri as strongly correlated with disease in new-onset untreated rheumatoid arthritis (NORA) patients. Increases in Prevotella abundance correlated with a reduction in Bacteroides and a loss of reportedly beneficial microbes in NORA subjec…

Isolation and characterization of nuclear microsatellite loci in the northern shrimp, Pandalus borealis

2012

Published version of an article published in the journal: Conservation Genetics Resources. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12686-011-9486-4 We developed and characterized 20 microsatellite primer loci for the northern shrimp Pandalus borealis. All 20 loci were polymorphic with number of alleles ranging from 3 to 36 and with observed heterozygosity between 0.04 and 0.93. In addition, we tested the utility of these markers in three related shrimp species, P. montagui, Atlantopandalus propinqvus and Dichelopandalus bonnieri. These new markers will prove useful in the identification of stock structure and hence, assessment of the commercially important species P…

Teologia miłosierdzia Bożego według bulli Misericordiae vultus papieża Franciszka

2016

Pope Francis in the bull Misericordiae vultus encouraged to reflect on the meaning of God’s mercy in human history and the practice of Christian charity in life. According to the papal encouragement this article reflects on the content of the notion of God’s mercy. It focuses on these aspects which proved to be essential in the papal bull. The analyses performed are made from a theological perspective; they are therefore an attempt of interpretation, justification, and systematization of the content of the papal statements about mercy. They focus on three main themes present in the papal reflection: God’s mercy is being considered in trinitological, christological and ecclesiological aspect…
